KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian man shot and killed his wife after he mistook her for a monkey picking fruit in a tree behind their house, the New Straits Times said on Wednesday.



The man, 70, is being held by police for causing death through recklessness after he fired a shotgun at what he thought was a monkey in a mangosteen tree on Monday, the newspaper said.


His wife, 68, had used a ladder to climb into the tree and was picking the tropical fruit when she was shot. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, the paper said. The couple lived in central Malaysia and had raised 13 children.

okay that is really sad and all but the fact that he mistook his wife for a monkey is somewhat hilarious

Can you imagine the 13 kids and their reactions? That really sucks! If I did that to my partner I'd kill myself right after I found out!

Can you imagine what the poor husband must be going through? Mistaking your own wife for a monkey and then killing her.

and the quston is why is he hunting monkeys in the first place

Probably to protect his fruit tree.

This made me laugh, it's funny because I read about people dieng, being mistaken for monkeys, having chain saws fall out of peoples hands from above them and having their necks cut.. and I don't care, or I find it funny.. but then, for example, a kitten dies and I get all watery.

She wouldn't have had to be pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, if she had pronounced her intentions of climbing trees in the back of the house to her 70 year old husband who was hanging around with a shot-gun ready to shoot monkeys down Now, we all know how hard it is; especially for female members of the human race; to imagine that our partner could actually take us for a monkey, but then in this case it would've been really worth it; wouldn't you say so?

When you're 70 years old and you're half blind/losing it -- and your wife is right up in that age area with you, you don't expect her to be up in a tree. I know if I saw a 68 year old up in a tree I'd be a little shocked. But I'm wondering why he didn't notice the ladder.

Thats terrible. At 70 years of age his eyesight must of failed him to think his wife was a monkey. Really sad. Another reason why people should not be allowed to own guns.

It was rather comical but it was designed to overtly pluck on your heart strings while covertly making a slightly comical statment.
He doesn't just look like a monkey, as you can see above he also acts like a monkey. He makes monkey like expressions and easy speach mistakes. I also don't much care for the disicions he makes.

I know i just can't believe that he can't speak properly. It was either Jay Leno or Jimmy kimmel who showed clips of Bush speaking Spanish and then showed clips of him speaking horrible English and commenting on how he speaks Spanish better than English. Oh how true it is.

I know I shouldn't find that funny- it's sad but I'm thinking how could he mistake his wife for a monkey? Sad but funny.
