Gascoigne's shirt sold for £28,680

An England football shirt, stained with Paul Gascoigne's tears, has sold for £28,680 at auction.

The classic white number 19 shirt was bought by a private British buyer.

It was expected to fetch £20,000.

Geordie Gazza won a place in the nation's heart when he used the shirt to dry his eyes after being booked during the 1990 World Cup semi-final in Italy.

The midfielder realised the booking would rule him out of the final if England beat West Germany - which they failed to do.

The shirt, signed by the whole team, was among around 450 lots that went under the hammer at Christie's.

The shirt worn by football legend Pele when Brazil won the 1958 World Cup final was sold for a staggering £70,505.

Pele, who was 17 at the time and in his first major tournament, scored twice in the 5-2 defeat of Sweden.

Other items in the auction included two FA Cup Winners' medals from Everton's victory in 1906, which fetched £4,580 and £5,377 each.
