I suggest adding more plants live or fake. And adding some rock work or drift wood. The rest is all good
Canadian Rottweiler
Oct 3 2004, 06:22 AM
The problem is,Oscars will eat the live plants,or rip the fake ones. The feeders get stuck in the fake plants and die(They are really stupid).I haven't taken a picture of my big Pleco yet.Look again in about 15 min.and I will post him.

I didn't know that there was such a thing as a yellow pleco.

Yeah, sometimes you find fish that are so rare that the people at the pet store don't know what the actual cost is,so they sell it for cheap.Like my Leopard Fasciatus, that is probably a fish that they will never have again. How much did you pay for the yellow pleco?

Oct 4 2004, 02:08 AM
That is a good price for something as rare as that.

Did they have many of those species?

My Pleco was $20.00.But I just bought him about 2 weeks ago.

DarkSide
Oct 4 2004, 05:26 AM
Nope I just got my 55 gal in July for my birthday, and I don't think I will ever have an oscar because:
1. I don't want to get bitten.
2. I have hgeard they are really really really messy.
3. I don't want to have to go downtown every other day to get it feeder fish.
and last but not least...
4. Because I do not have the money at the moment.

Their not as bad as you think. They don't bite when they're young.Even when they get bigger, they might bite, but they have tiny little teeth that you barely feel(They're teeth are meant for locking on to,not taking out a big chunk.)They aren't that messy,I mean yeah they chew up meat and fish, but it isn't anything a pleco can't fix(Pleco's grow very big in this environment.)They eat about one fish per day.You can buy 20 feeders for about $5.00.Although,you can skip some days of feeding them that and just give them Oscar pellets(expensive, but last a long time.)About 8 pellets a day if you're not feeding them fish.Or,they will eat beef heart. You can buy a huge cow heart from your local meat store for about $6.00.This lasts for about a year, but you have to cut off little chunks. They will eat 2 pieces of this per day if you're not feeding them anything else. They are not as hard to maintain as some people say.
Canadian Rottweiler
Oct 4 2004, 05:42 AM
One thing about them is that they don't get along very well with small fish(actually they eat them.)If you buy Oscars as babies, and they grow up with the other fish in your tank, then they will NOT eat them. When Oscars get big, they don't get along with eachother unless they are a male and a female.I have a male and female.
DarkSide
Oct 4 2004, 05:42 AM
Ewww... A cow heart? Oh really? They would get along. What if they were really hungry if I forgot to feed them? I still don't think I would get an oscar though. I like making comunity tanks because you can experiment with adding diffrent breeds of fish. But I have to sleep again we will continue towmorrow XD.

Yeah,I know it sounds gross(actually it is gross)but is the cheapest way to feed the oscars. This is the healthiest food that they can eat.Actually, cow heart speeds up their growth by 25%,and nearly doubles their life span.

If you forgot to feed them then they would get mad(these fish are very sensitive and change their mood often). They might not do anything,or they might eat your live plants, and tear out your fake ones. But they know not to eat other fish that they know. They know that they would get in trouble(these fish are VERY smart).

Yeah,so if you're gonna get oscars then make sure that you feed them.Or,if you're not gonna be around, then get someone else to feed them.Once you know everything about them and are used to them, they are very beautiful fish and worth having.

Oct 5 2004, 02:08 AM
Yeah so anyways... What is your favourite fish?
Canadian Rottweiler
Oct 5 2004, 04:22 AM
My favorite tropical fish would be the South American Dragonfish.Once again.I didn't know much about it,neither did the people at the pet store though. They said that it eats flakes.Well, actually it eats bloodworms. He died because of this.(But they are a species that scientists say shouldn't be owned by people at home because they are endangered and tough to handle.)They have spikes on their back and stomach, large fangs, and are a bluish color. In the pic he looks like he is dead, but that is how they act.(They are also the one of the fastest fish in the world when they are mad or hyper.)Here is a pic of him...
DarkSide

Aww he's sleeping

Yeah those are at my LFS too I wanted one but I wasn't sure if it would be agressive to my dojo loach. One of my favourite tropical fish would have to be the burmese catfish. Ummm I don't have a picture you can try searching them on google, but most likely you'll only end up getting recipes. They get very large and they get spines on there dorsal fins and there side fins (pectorals I think

).
