Ok here's a question. Weither or not you like Martha Stewart or not, or weither or not you think she was wronged in court or not, the question here is if you are convicted of a federal felony, and scentenced to a prison term.... are you not supposed to stay in the country otherwise it looks like your fleeing prison?

Wow no replies? I actually thought this might get a conversation going. whistling2.gif Oh well.

Shes a celebrity, and this is an acception made for her, which, they wouldn't make for non- famous type people. When she is in jail im sure it will feel like home to her (with all the fixins) Its really stupid, but I'm suprised they gave her a jail term to serve.
Celumnaz
Agree with that. I think non-celebrity can get the same thing if they show they're exceptionally responsible people who will show up the day they're supposed to and still bring cookies to the jailers.
Most crooks don't fit that description though.

Ever wonder why there is such desension in the population of this country? It is the unfair application of the laws. Why does she deserve special treatment? I would be willing to bet a weeks pay that if the situation was reversed I would not be allowed to leave the country. If she was convicted of a crime why is she out and about and not in prison serving out her 5 month sentence? Did she or did she not break a law and was she or was she not convicted of breaking a law and was she or was she not sentenced to serve prison time for that crime? I don't care who she is!!!!!!

One rule for them, another for us. Thats why there should be no them.

That author that wrote about Martha, you know her neighbor and used-to-be friend, rolleyes.gif wrote that people close to Martha said she was a psychopath. ph34r.gif
Psychopaths do things that Martha is guilty of doing. cool.gif

I read his book...very enlightening. I used to love Martha, but thought she was so mechanical. I told my husband long before the mess she got herself into that there was something strange about her. That's it, psychopaths are strangely detached_'going through the motions'.
Michelle

I have mixed emotions about this. I think that a lot of high profile men have gotten off with nothing and they made an example of her that was unjust.

Personally, I don't like her...I like her shows because they're very informative. I just get past her coldness and take what information I can use. I tend to be a perfectionist so her style suits me.

But....men don't like strong women, for the most part, and I think she challenges their masculinity.

Fortunately, my husband loves a take charge woman who can refinish floors, work on my own car, paint the outside of the house, etc...etc....etc... As a matter of fact he LOVES it. laugh.gif

thumbsup.gif Michelle. I agree. But if Martha ia a psychopath she should go to prison. These kinds of people don't rehabilitate; many continue their criminal ways, they just learn how 'not' to get caught. They usually have a high intelligence.
Michelle

But that's not what she was being tried for. She was being convicted of purgery. Whether she's a psychopath or not is a whole different matter.

How many people have commited purgery in court and just gotten a slap on the wrist?

Her ex-friend may just want to make a few bucks off it. whistling2.gif

But she was committing a crime. If she would have owned up to what she did, they would have gone easier, she probably would have gotten off with a slap on the wrist. But she didn't, she chose to lie. Martha has a history of 'not so respectable' wheelings and dealings in the stock market. And that's where she messed up. You don't lie to the authorities and lying is a big part of psychopathy; stealing is another big thing.
Michelle

thumbsup.gif True Babs, she did commit a crime, it just upsets me when so many high profile men get away with it and she was convicted.

She's a cocky b***h and they went after her. She thought her wealth and power could get her out of it. I think that's what why they used her as an example
Babs
I hope that's not it. That would piss me off. You and I both know that that is wrong.

Martha Stewart starts prison term
Martha Stewart, the US lifestyle guru convicted of lying to federal investigators about a suspicious share sale, has begun her prison sentence.
She was sentenced to five months' imprisonment in July, after being found guilty of conspiracy and obstruction.

Her website revealed she had started her prison term at a minimum-security jail in West Virginia on Friday.

Stewart earned millions from a business empire based on selling domestic items and lifestyle advice.

'Look at Nelson Mandela'

Addressing "friends" on her website, Ms Stewart wrote: "By the time you read this, I will have reported to a minimum-security prison in Alderson, West Virginia, to begin serving my five-month sentence."

Despite an appeal against her conviction that has yet to be resolved, Stewart said she did not want to delay going to prison.

"I have decided to serve my sentence now because I want to put this nightmare behind me as quickly as possible for the good of my family and my company," she wrote on her website.

Stewart had earlier expressed optimism at her conviction, saying: "There are many, many good people who have gone to prison. Look at Nelson Mandela."

Penal profit

Although she stepped down as chairwoman and chief executive of her firm, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, the domestic icon remains the biggest shareholder in the business.

She is expected to resume working for the firm after her release from prison.

The prison at Alderson, West Virginia, has been home to a number of famous inmates, including the jazz singer, Billie Holliday.

Residents of the town are hoping the media interest in its newest arrival will make them wealthier, according to the Associated Press news agency.

Some locals have rented their lawns to TV networks' satellite trucks while others are selling visitors souvenirs and merchandise.

Poor Martha, she went in this morning. There was a sign welcoming her, that's a first. wink2.gif No one has ever gone in early to serve their sentence they say, I'm proud of her. original.gif

I hope she does something to help the prison community, I think people will be interested in her stay and what she can accomplish there.

Yeah but in the grand sceme of things, her crime was pretty minor, and something that occurs on a daily basis on Wall Street. Moreover, if my broker tells me I should sell, I sell.

The big guys at Enron, on the other hand, they should be locked up for a long, long time. Many people lost their entire retirement fund because of them.
