simply put, yes
why wouldn't it make a noise if no one was there? if it makes a noise when people are there, how does the tree know to make the noise? if the tree has a way of knowing when a person is there listening, then perhaps a better question would be how do trees know we are present and listening? us as humans who are considered the most intelligent species on the planet cant tell if someone else is listening to them even if the person they are talking to is right in there face

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not this endless riddle. NO!

To answer the question:
Yes and no. Noise, AKA sound is nothing more than the movement of air at a certain frequency. The faster/higher the freq. the higher the sound.
When an item falls to the ground, it vibrates the air around it causing a sound wave. If a receptical that can discern sound is in the area, then the wave will be translated as a audible sound as a thud or crash.
If there is no receptical, the sound wave will be just the same, just nothing will translate it to an audible wave. However, surronding objects will feel it as a vibration.
Sound is nothing more than vibration of air.
Yes and No

to put that question in another way and to also answer that question....
If a meteor hits the sea does it make a splash...
I bet the person who came up with that original question probably thought the world revolved around him

yes the light turns off because i remember when i was a kid i wanted to know that and i went into the fridge and it was dark as hell. Then later i figured out that when the fridge door closes it hits a switch and if u just press the switch with your finger it goes out, so i wasted a lot of time.

Does the person who made up that question think that the hundreds of animals living in the wood are deaf or something?

Sera is right and Hillarious, just as Seeking and Stillcrazy, scientificly air vibes makes sound...but in the world of the mind does it work the same way?
but technicly if we look at it in our "modern world" it would be : if someone post something and nobody reads it does it exist?

Perhaps the answer should be yes noise is made, but there is no noise because there is no one to there process/hear the sound.

If i shout into a phone, and there is no one on the other end of the phone to hear my shout, does the shout exist?
OF COURSE!
This is so dumb. Why not say 'if i close my eyes in the woods, and there is no one else around, do all the trees dissapear until i open my eyes again!?'
Dumb.

cheer up banana boy, it's still a very contemplative question, like what's the sound of an one handed clap or How many milles must a man walk be fore you can call him a man.

lol everyone's answers. when i hear this question, i always remember the simpsons episode with the minigolf and lisa's explanation of the question: "how can there be a sound if no one's there to hear it." i always liked the question.

I prefer Family Guy.
Peter: 'Holy crap i'm communicating with nature! Hey if one of you guys falls over, do you make a sound when no one's around?'
Tree 1: 'Oh yeah. Bob fell over last week and he hasn't shut up about it since'.
Tree 2: 'Oh yeah, just stand there and b**** but no one is going to HELP ME!?'

And Piget thought bsbies were egocentric.

It's a pretty stupid question but if it's true that it doesn't actually make sound then you would have to seriously consider the theory that this reality is just an illusion. I think that's what they were probablly refering to when they came up with it.
