I've noticed that many new UM members are getting younger and younger. It's awesome to see how popular UM is with all ages, and that all can converse side by side without problems. I was wondering however (truthfully) if the "older" age group on UM takes the younder audiences responses/topics into consideration, and take them seriously? or do most dismiss the younger lads because of their age and "immaturity?"...

A lot of them do....with varying amounts of rolling eyes smilies.
There are, however, a great many older members who are more willing to listen and accept a person's point of veiw, rather than dismiss them as "inexperienced"

There are reasons for it I guess....I have seen some of the younger members of this site (14 and yuonger for example) post some very odd comments

But for the most part, it's a silly thing to do

Should be remembered that Saurman himself is only 23

I think maturity cannot be defined by age alone. I know some of the "younger" members who make a hell of a lot more sense than some of the "older" members.

As an "older" member of UM, I tend not to notice how old people are. To be honest, a lot of the time I am very surprised when I find out that some are so young. I take peoples comments as I see them. Age really does'nt come into it.

immaturity is a complicated thing, as my self get dumber as i grow older.
we could think of icons like the tibeten monks which at a very young age are extremly wize and consient of the reallity around them, but in conter part there's the other youth a much "simpler" (as simple minded) youth, with the sponge bob and flashy colours.
but really it's all about being serious when you have to...ultimatly we should read the insite of all the poster equally, then judge by our selfs.

I dont think age makes much of a difference. Its just how they act/post. I've seen lots of older people that can act like total idiots, where as younger ones act very mature. Not here, but on other forums

The kids on this site always amaze me with their intellect. Of course you have 'trouble makers' everywhere. I don't think this just goes for the youngsters. We have full grown adults posting gibberish and nonsense.

Yes that is so true. There are a couple of 14 year olds here that can run circles around much older folks logic and reasoning...I have seen it happen many times...
Equally I have seen some older members of the board post some seriously childish comments, so there is no accounting for age here...
I try to be respectful of the younger folks that come here that post things that we have seen a thousand times...I would hate to think that some kid comes across a photo somewhere that makes his hair stand on end when he sees it, brings it here for confirmation and gets;
Dude, you're stupid, that is the oldest hoax in the book. what are you a noob?
Not very nice, and quite rude...So much for the wonder of a new find...but it happens sometimes here.
That being said, I do find that many of the younger kids tend to type in IM shorthand which drives me nuts. A few of the younger posters seem to have issues with their command of the English language too...quite frustrating...
for the most part, age doesn't make much of a difference...

there's a time to take things seriously, and there's a time to joke around. I can't speak for everyone, but UM is a little bit of escapism from the grind of my everyday life. I get on here and I don't have to worry so much about not saying what's on my mind or not flirting with some girl because my boss is watching and I'm supposed to be serious. And seeing what's going on in the world just makes me numb at times, so I try to cut loose and enjoy myself as much as possible. I see no harm in that.

I don't have a problem with anyone because of their age. If they seem intelligent and mature, I won't even notice how old they are most of the time. There's a few people that are 14 - 16 and act like typical spoiled teens, but there aren't many. I've also thought a couple of people were teens when they turned out to be older.

When conversing with someone in a topic, i never consider their age.
Take Janiel, i have alot more faith in that lad's understanding of the universe/debating skills/general maturity than i do in some people over 40 on this site. This is only one example i can think of alot of others.
That been said, i find alot of the people who post silly nonsense on this site such as they have abilities and aliens talk to them do tend to be very young and are not old enough to understand the real scientific reasons why certain things happen. They make up their own ideas and stick to them because, well, we all remember when we were that age.
This stubbornness that does come with age makes it hard to converse with a certain number of members and has made me shy away from topics they create (and i don't like being called a 'turd' much either).

i very rarely type in caps, because i'm lazy, but i try to use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc, so that i'm understandable and not seen as a complete moron. not so with some new members, who choose to bring needless abbreviations and leet into conversations. it's not entirely unreadable, but it can be quite annoying. might just be me though.

Setting aside Sera's condescending quote that a lot of us do....
I for one have no idea how old a lot of the members are. I don't, until after becoming curious when they continue to make childish comments, look at profiles to see what age they are.
I have a lot of friends that are twenty or so years younger. I find them to be optimistic, non cynical and more open to new ideas.
It's not unusual at a party to find myself giggling, dancing and generally spending more time with the youngsters. Let the older folks sit around and think they're having a good time watching us have a good time.

Just getting back on topic. As I am one of the 'older' members on here I can honestly say that I have hardly ever even thought about people's ages when I am answering posts. When I have done there have been times that I have been amazed that someone, for example who is 14, can answer so articulately and intelligently.
I guess now you have asked the question its got me thinking...You can kind of tell who is younger than others sometimes by the way they write, in general its hardly ever noticable.
Of course I take the younger posters seriously, I would never dismiss a post because its been written by a younger person than myself. However if it was just a ridiculous stupid post I would ignore it, regardless of the age. I actually feel age is irrelevant on a forum such as this anyway.
