Well boring may have been a poor choice of words, but it's far from glamorous. Most of my time is spent locked away in a studio laying down endless hours of tape or sitting in with really bad orchestras, jazz groups and wedding bands. I do get to travel a great deal however, and every now and then I pick up a contract that I get really excited about. So in the end I enjoy what I do and I suppose that's the important thing.
Actually XSAS your job sounds really intriguing, how did you wind up in that line of work?

Will you be working with recording equipment, or do you have a specific genre of music in mind?
I only ask because I'm involved with my boyfriend's career, which happens to be music and music production. The music industry would be so much fun, and you'd meet such interesting people. Good choice.

Wedding bands and music at that level I can imagine being boring... but Music is a fantastic gift, I fumble around with guitars that have cost me a fortune.
I love music from the very beginning to all the rap now... except classical.....
As for my job some aspects are enjoyable, Kidnap and Ransom, child recovery and a few other services.. but the rest is mundane, I have tried to move away from it but always end up back.

Well, I am in the military - the Coast Guard to be exact. Quite a good time and every day is different!
And OriginalF, I'm jealous. I played trumpet as a session musician for about two years some two DECADES ago - and I loved it. I would really like to get involved again. I'm messing about in some choruses now, but I still miss the feel of studio work.

Ausaria;
I'm heading off to get my Phd (I already have my Masters so it shouldn't take too long) so I'll have a good safety net in case my own music career goes sour. I actually really want to teach music at a good university when I get older but right now I'm enjoying getting my session career off the ground. I work with recording equipment everyday and I actually just finish building a studio in the basement of my house. I don't really have a specific genre in mind but I really like experimental jam band kind of stuff simply because it poses a challenge to improvise on stage and I find myself at my most creative when I find myself having to compose music on the spot.
The music industry can be fun and exciting place, I'm just now getting to a level where I'm starting to meet some interesting people and picking up really cool contracts. But there are also some real slimbags involved with the industry so be careful with who you associate yourself with and find a really good lawyer.
XSAS;
I too find most genres of music enjoyable...even classical. Music is such a unique form of expression and I feel very blessed to be able to do it.
No doubt, instruments are way too expensive I don't even want to know what I have spent over the years on all of my various equipment...it makes my head spin. Oh and keep in mind some of the best musicians in history started out as fumblers.
I can imagine it's quite rewarding to recover a child and return them to the waiting arms of a loving parent, although I can imagine it's quite a dangerous line of work. But I have to say I greatly admire somebody who is willing to put their own body and well being at risk to help out somebody in need.
Do you find yourself traveling to some rather odd and exotic places or is it primarily local work?

Thank you for your kind words... however I would prefer to play the guitar, I keep looking on the music discussion hoping I can jump in and ask questions but I never seem to understand what they are saying, I actually got my guitars out again and re-tuned them last night, the fingers on my left hand are still throbbing,
I do get to visit some nice exotic countries but get to see them in a different light, child recoveries are globalised, but Kidnappings are more specific to certain countries, Africa, South East Asia, South America.. etc..

Oh you're welcome, perhaps we should trade jobs for a day?

Just kidding. I can imagine that you must see these countries in a rather darker light than the average tourist, are there ever moments when you get a chance to just stop and look around at your surroundings or is each job a fast paced; in and out kind of thing?
Yes us musicians have a tendency to get a little lingo happy in our discussions but I'm sure anybody there would be more than happy to give you some advice if you pop in and ask a question. Actually feel free to PM me any time you'd like, I'd be more than happy answer any music related questions that you may have.
