I got this from google, they said that this is a dogfish, but I have caught many dogfish before, and this is completely different. It slightly resembles a coelacanth, but doesn't match it.Plus, this came from a lake. What is it?
Canadian Rottweiler
Here are some pics of a Coelacanth and dogfish...

Hey, Canadian! The first pic is a Northern Snakehead. Unfortunately, some extremely unintelligent fool left a pair loose in a pond in Maryland and now they're pretty much all over the country. Game officials thought that they wouldn't be able to survive our winters, but it looks like they can. They are native to China and used as food fish over there. However, most states in the US warn you to kill these bastages if you catch one. They can live out of water for several days and can "walk" on their fins. Oh, and one last note, they have some sharp teeth...

It's not a bowfin (dogfish) because if you look at its back fin, you can see how it looks kind of split. Bowfins have one whole fin, snakeheads have this split fin thing going on.

Thanks for the info dude. thumbsup.gif

...Dudette... tongue.gif I've never seen a picture of a snakehead that was so big though, that's insane! It'll make you think twice before swimming in your local pond/creek/lake...

Why do they suggest we kill them?
BabyBash82
Because they eat the local fish? I'd assume..
Canadian Rottweiler
Maybe they eat too much resources like fish and other life.Or maybe they are a hazard to people on the lake.

It looks like a giant Chinese Fighting fish, you know those little things in the cups at the pet store, the one that attack your finger through the plastic. Those things a vicious. If the snake-eel thingys are related to fighting fish at all, im never touching fresh water at all.

I think of them as the rabbits of the water world.

Only alot more nastier. These suckers will multiply and attach to anything, and I mean anything...

Nice, huh? disgust.gif

They want you to kill the snakeheads because they will eat anything in their way. Most animals that are released into a habitat other than their own will wreak havoc on their new environment.

Hi everyone - I'm new here. You post was the bait that hooked me in..l grin2.gif

My honey and I caught a couple of huge dogfish last summer in the lake. They didn't look much like the pix you posted though - the head looked different.

The snakefish was on the news last week. Seems like they found one in Lake Michigan and now they are looking to find ways to keep them away. Like the above poster said, they eat everything in sight.
