Hey guys...I have to do a pro-nuclear power debate for chemistry class, so I was just wondering....what do you think of it? If you have any info/personal stories/opinions, please share.

Thanks!

well it's pretty safe if you know how to recycle the uranium, they generate alot of energy with a minimum of by product, it's still a pretty young energy source the latest technological advance we could, one day, apply the e=mc2 theory ( the energy of one atom could be almost infinite).

Nuclear energy doesn't affect the nature the same way a dam does due to the fact that dams create a artificial flood affecting the health of the marine life, nuclear power is cleaner then fissile fuel which as an major increase in price (and creates lots of CO2)
Finally nuclear power is perfect for all environments you really just need a plant, uranium and water, some countries in eastern europe use that power for it's versatility.
Accidents a really rare.

Personally I wouldn't get any where near a nuclear plant, my electricity is hydro and a like it that way. Safe, re-usable and at the pin point of technology, hydroelectricity is one of the safest power source in the world plus with the eolian project in 2007 electricity will be as safe as ever.

Ever since the long island accident and the Schernobil catastrophe, the world have seen the dangers of one goof off or improper installation. To this day people are dying from the radio-active emanation of the old factory, one incident like that in a major city could wipe out millions and the cloud of radioactivity would flood the surrounding area. Quite scary.

i live near a nucular plant... and no, there arent a lot of mutants running around.

This is going quite a ways back, but in high school science we were given the analogy that living within 5 miles of a nuclear power plant was as detrimental to your health as smoking exactly one cigarette.

Don't ask me for a source on that though, although I am guessing if you search the net long enough you will find one.

it's all fun and games till a nuclear plant has a leak.

if something happens at ours and we're in school, we're supposed to take an iodide pill (i think thats what its called) and they're gonna bus us to another school. But, with the way the system works, by the time we get out, well all be sick from radiation anyway, and thats assuming the other school is far enuff away.

If our plant blows or leaks or whatever, screw the busses, im getting in my car, and driving to ohio. id like to see the school try and stop me.

That would be, in fact, something to perticular to look at.

I believe that, as with everything else in this world, is not a matter of nuclear power itself but of how stricts the safety measures are. If safety is at high standards, the reactor is maintained properly, then there is very large production of electric power with relatively little risk or environmental pollution (And before someones shouts "Toxic waste", they should take a look at what comes out of the pipes of a coal power plant).

The most negative factor in nuclear power, is the fact that it's connected mentally with nuclear weapons and mass destruction. But hey, let's take as an example...planes.
Are they crashing, even though safety measures and maintenance are held? Yes
Are they used (in their military versions) for destruction and wars? Yes
Do we nevertheless use them because they transport millions of passengers and cargo around the world with high degree of-statistical-safety? Yes
