Hi all, i'm new here and well this looks like the kind of place i can tell this story without too much (i hope) ridicule, about 17 yrs ago i was out at a mates farm in Victoria (AUS), we were out in one of his paddocks stealing rabbits from the neighbours traps and just being kids, we had an old Holden as a paddock bomb to go shooting and hooning about the place, there were four of us there so two of them slept in the car while us two were around the fire, i'm not sure what time it was but it was late maybe after midnight, we heard a thump on the roof of the car looked over and saw what looked like a dog, a really really big dog it was the length of the roof of the wagon, it was dark but the fire was still throwing out a bit of light.

We could see that it was black and shaggy but the fur didn't look greasy or wet, just black, one of the guys in the car looked out thinking it was us two just playing around, but he saw us terrified on the other side of the fire so he promply blew a hole in the roof of the car with his old 410 shotgun, whatever it was just took off so fast it was weird, the whole time it did not make a single sound not a growl the only sound was when it got onto the car, didn't even hear anything when it left, but as soon as it was gone there was the most disgusting smell it has ever been my bad luck to come across, a rotton sweet sickly sort of stink, needless to say we got in the car and took off back to the house, next day we went back and found no footprints, and there was no blood on the roof of the car, we wern't drinking or smoking anything, scared the hell out of me, still does, what the hell was it?

I have only told this story once so please go easy on the new fella, but the anonimity of cyberspace is a great help, thanks for any input, ideas or most of all answers.

Cheers
Dezmond
I hear more stories aobut this,

Ghost Dogs.

I will try to find some more info on it.
SilverCougar
Simple question...

Are you of Irish, or Celt in general decent?
Panthera leo atrox
Probably just a stray dog, and your friend missed it thumbsup.gif
mr_halo
most likely just a dog....

how big was this big black dog?

and what makes you so sure it was a dog?

cool.gif

p.s tell your friend not to shoot at potential cryptids...infact don't have a gun at all..
saint seiya
aren't they called hell dogs or hell hounds
mr_halo

hellhounds...hmmmmm

cool.gif
Tia
There's a large range of possibilities-

1. Ghost dog / Hell hound as has been mentioned.
2. Feral dog, some of them grow huge imagine a longhaired german shepard and rotti crossed. ( most probable)
3. We do have black panthers out there, but you described it as shaggy so this doesn't really fit in.
4. Theres also arguments on Thylacoleo still being around.
5. Yowie

I'd question though, why would any creature come in that close to a fire and jump on a car?
Canadian Rottweiler
Maybe it was a kangaroo.Or a wallabe.Or possibly a large wildcat that was smuggled in. cool.gif

Slugnugget,

I have an uncle who is a barber and he told us his experience while he
is on his way home one that, their is a big black dog suddenly appeared
in front of him, he is about 5'6 ft. tall and the dog , he calculated the height
about on the upper part of his hips. He was terrified, since he carried a straight
razor he used in his job, he shouted at the dog " Im not afraid of you,
come near me and i will cut your throat". Then suddenly the big black dog
disappear. Strange!

What im guessing is that, it could be a shape shifter.

There are things beyond our normal comprehension
and knowledge...exist. Its because we dont see it,
doesn't mean they are not real. Remember: we have senses,
eyes to see, sense of smell, sense of touch, sense of the spirit
that whispers within us and all our senses that tells us something
that we should not ignore.
Canadian Rottweiler
Did he get a good look at what it was?Or just a glimpse?
slugnugget
Hi all, Silvercouger i'm of Scottish decent, is that important to this?
Mr Halo, that first pic is very very close to what i saw, the eyes didn't
stand out but i was terrified at the time!

As for why it jumped on the car and came near the fire, i have no idea,
but we had the fire a good 5 meters from the car, it was easily as big
as an Irish wolfhound but was much stockier in the body, the guys in the
car didn't see it but myself and my mate near the fire saw it for maybe
10-15 seconds, but it's hard to say because fear seems to slow down
time.

thanks all
SilverCougar
People of Celt desent have a ghostly big shaggy black dog that haunts them. I've seen him myself... scary thing.

QUOTE
The black dogs are found all over the British Isles, especially on deserted roads. They are roughly the size of a calf and they move in utter silence, except for the clicking of their claws. The chill despondency and despair these dogs cause is the reason why there are no detailed descriptions of their appearance. While a companion is no guarantee for safety -- for one might see the dog and the other might not -- it offers a better protection than walking alone. It is said that the best companion is a descendant of Ean MacEndroe of Loch Ewe. He rescued a fairy once and in return he and his descendants were given perpetual immunity from the power of the black dogs.
mr_halo

well i'm glad i've never seen one....i'd be rather scared ohmy.gif

by the way i still have no idea what it could of been...

Silvercougar, are these black dogs an omen of an impending death or horrible event? I think I've heard of these dogs.

slugnugget, there wasn't a tragedy that occured immediately after, was there?

i'm just curious, where did you hear about this?

any links?

cool.gif

JennRose
Not really...it's not something I've gotten off the Web. I think I remember reading about them in a book Celtic spirits and other books on such. If I recall correctly, they were something like Banshees...foretelling a tragedy. But banshees were attached to a particular family whereas the Black Dog was just a sign of death.

I'll browse around though. original.gif

hey Every one This is My First Post And This is What i'm Found on Google

Black Dog: The size of a young calf, with a long black shaggy coat and bright fiery eyes, it was harmless if left alone; but if a human spoke to a black dog or attempted to touch it he was instantly struck dumb and died. They appear in English fairy tales.

Yes impending death or something just as horrible, The Celtic people fear it, and thus why they dislike walking alone at night.

Let me dig up some links. And see if I can find an online listing of the book I have with these in it.

Now that i think about it, my Grandmother (she was Scottish) passed away
about two weeks after i saw the dog, but until now i never put the two
together, do the Scots have the same sort of legends?
SilverCougar
More or less. I remember seeing it about a week before a couple of my cousins were killed in a car wreck. Granted I'm of Irish desent... but it was a wide spread mythos... Right on up to the Norse.

Don't worry too much until you see something
could just be your mind playing tricks on you,
but then again........

They knew nothing about this mate. It is not a dog ! anywhere in this world, if you smelled something that you'd never smelled before, this is the sign of that strange creatures that can take shapes of any kind and sometimes like a bigfoot. Don't be scared with them. All they want is to scare you, annoy you and sometimes make you lose your way back. So if you wanna go back in the woods, carry with you a tail of a stingray. That's your only defence just in case.
Feenix Fire
^hmm...very interesting scipherel.

^that too is very interesting. do you think you can find some links or something on that subject?

Somebody mentioned that it could be a sign of death. That's what i thought too.
I had read it in some books when i was in highschool. They also mention it in Harry Potter adn the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Panthera leo atrox
Reminds me of the black cat myth tongue.gif
brittish_gurl
Hymmmmmmmmmm...... this all seems interesting and creepy at the same time. I myself don't even have an explanation towards that. It sounds like some kind of creepy encounter of a strange creature. If I were you i'd do a lot of research on it, scientifically and mythically. It will eventually all add up, but that just depends on how hard you want o figure this out. But I gotta admit, that would be cool to have that happen to myself. Well, yeah, if you want take my advice... SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

perhaps it was just a big black dog.
Devilwolf
maybe it was werewolf...was there a full moon out that night?

God, don't say that it freaked me out enough as it is!
No there was pretty much no moon that night, it was very dark
and a long way from any towns so there was not much but the
camp fire, after doing a bit more research and reading some of
the posts here i personally think it was some kind of spectral
hound, but hey like man-in-mudboots says it could just have
been a big black dog.
ZOLTAN
Dude i say u go back out there again with the lads and this time have a bigger gun with more bullets and have a head cam with spotty to film it u never know it might happen again if not well u could always blow the hell out of some roo's.
Panthera leo atrox
I wonder why the black dog myth has survived so well? huh.gif
Devilwolf
because myths spread so well from generation to generation especially in stories to scare children
Panthera leo atrox
Sounds like a good theory thumbsup.gif
joc
thumbsup.gif My guess is it was a panther....shaggy?....well it was dark and lit by the fire light so that 'shaggy' thing might have been part imagination and memory...memory is a funny thing...or perhaps it was wet and was trying to dry off on your car....maybe the gunshot scared the sh** out of him and he farted? I think it was a panther...

...that is my logical assessment.....the next guess would be akin to what Silver C thumbsup.gif ougar theorized................dude.....you should write a script for a movie with that!
Dog Demon
Mayhaps it could've been a wolf or a Newfoundland. Here's some Barghest pics from a virtual pets game I play and these are the best ones I can find.
man_in_mudboots
QUOTE

perhaps because just a plain 'big black dog that follows celtic people' requires very little imagination to believe. or perhaps because there are so many normal big black dogs to be mistaken for supernatural creatures by drunk celts out on dark nights.
zudo
maybe it was a baboon... A big fat shaggy baboon... scary thought their

i'm interested in this Irish story. As anyone got any more info about this?

It was definately not someone in fancy dress, i saw it well enough to be sure of that, the smell and the fact that it made no sound just made it all that much more creepy.

G'day Halo original.gif I did ask a few of the locals if there had been anything odd happening around the place but it was just the usual foxes taking lambs and chooks, i didn't go into detail at the time as to what we had seen coz i would have been a laughing stock, the area is open country with the odd clump of gum trees and shrubs, houses are roughly about 5km apart.

As for what i think it was, well i feel pretty sure it was a spectral hound like in the irish myths, but i geuss i will never know for sure dontgetit.gif
