I got this from a physics BB this is the way the fellow wrote it: "I have7,7,7,7,1 and should use these numbers only for once and have 100. I'm allowed to use any mathematical equations could someone solve it?" (I think he's Russian or somthing)

my answer was 7x7=49
7x7=49
+ 1
_______
100
another persons answer was: ((7 X 7 X 1) + (7 X 7) +2) = 100

both wrong.
Phantom
Move the "7's" around so they make two digitis "0" and put the one in front of it...

Hey, you said I was ALLOWED to use mathematical equations, not that I HAD to..

Think outside the box.. j6p.... smile.gif

ooohh, Phantom...
handsome AND clever...nice. smile.gif
emmy
Oh that was so simple....and there I was with calculator, pythagorum thesis books etc. trying to find the answer..... biggrin.gif laugh.gif
Althalus
and emmy's wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif very, very, very good at maths.

I gave up after reading it.

I like it Phantom. If I ever get a mathmatic answer I'll let you know but as far as I'm concerned , you got it bro cool.gif
Bizarro
nice one there, Phantom. i was telling J6p that i spent like 45 minutes with a calculator yesterday afternoon trying to work it out. GAH, im a dunce laugh.gif

Ok, I posted the problem on several forums including a physics BB that is frequented by some real heavyweights. I mean I don't understand most of what they say, I just play games with their heads...its fun laugh.gif
Here are some of the solutions: Of coarse you have seen mine. To refresh your memory it went like this---7x7=49
7x7=49
+ 1
_______
100 mad.gif it didn't fly

Solution #2 - 7 X 7 + (7 - 7)^1 = 100 in base 7

Solution #3 - -(77-177)=100

Solution #4 - user posted image

And the one I liked a lot. Solution #5 - 177-77=100 so clean and simple, right.

Here is the result of a vote taken by a bunch of egg head physicists...........DRUM ROLL.........#4. I can't believe it.

PS This is the real deal and I didn't take credit for the winner but I did tell everyone there "Thank you I accept youre praise with humility on behalf of my student." cool.gif laugh.gif
Phantom
WOOHOO! I RULE! bounce.gif

But really... good thinking on the mathematical ones...
BTW j6p... yours only adds up to 99....

I feel so proud right now, I almost wrote a speech... smile.gif
Homer
That’s very clever Phantom smile.gif
j6p
Yes Congrats Phantom.

Yeah I know that mine was only 99 but like I said I play with their heads sometimes. I made them prove that I was wrong...you shoulda heard the fireworks laugh.gif

I guess they never heard the saying, "never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat the hell out of you". cool.gif
