I was skeptical, but my girlfriend pushed me into renting this and we sat down to watch it. It started off poorly and i was ready to 'neener' in her face, but then i really started to get into it. By halfway through i was on an emotional rollercoaster and at the end i was blown away by how awesome this movie was. It was sad and funny and nice and makes you think.

What are your thoughts?
Disinterested
I loved it!!! I was pretty worried too, at first, that we rented some dull movie... but maybe a half hour into it, I was completely taken my it.

It was amazing.
BurnSide
Gives you a renewed appreciation for your memories eh.

I like movies that do that. Let you take something away from them. Yanno?
Janiel
i havent seen it yet....so, you recomend it?
BurnSide
I recommend it highly.

However it is not a movie to be taken lightly, not to be watched with a bunch of friends expecting a laugh fest. It's a serious, involved movie about releationships and the value of ones memories. That has some hi larious parts.
Janiel
sweet, i'll look into it....thanks thumbsup.gif
BurnSide
No sweat.

It reminded me a little of Vanilla Sky... only because it's a little confusing. But at the end it comes together SO well.
Disinterested
Yeah, it's a really sweet movie. original.gif

I love the part when he was going through a good memory, and he tries so hard to hold on to it... it was so sad.
ames2787
Yeah I saw that at the cinema when it came out mainly cos my friend is a big Kate Winslet friend - but I thought it was really good - so much so that I rented it again recently to watch it - totally rocked and not boring at all - so far the people who have found it boring failed to understand what was going on, but it all comes together well at the end ... well I think so anyway!
Me_Again
laugh.gif I liked it but Blockbuster catergorized (sp...lol) it under comedies huh.gif
Anyway I wish I could erase some of my bad memories - but look forward to making new ones wub.gif wink2.gif

One of my greatest fears is to lose control of my thoughts and memories.

Sounds like this would be a movie I'd enjoy. original.gif

Me_Again- I'd hate to lose my memories of you. wub.gif
ames2787
I spose if you erased your memories you would be a different person so that might not be a positive thing. I spoke to my psychology teacher about this and he sad that that kind of technology isn't that unbelievable.
Andy_R
I wanted to like this film. I applaud its originality.
But... I just couldn't get into it.
It turned into a sappy love story/chick flick. Not my taste.

It definitely isn't as far fetched as most would think.
BurnSide
Quite possible when you think logically about the process. Singling out specific brain patterns and erasing those patterns, thus erasing memories.
ames2787
Yeah cos I didn't think it would be possible - but he confirmed that in the future - probably very far - it wouldn't be totally impossible - but of course there are all kinds of ethics involved with it - is it fair to erase someone without their prior permission?

i loved this movie... not at all what i was expecting but just great kinda like watching someone else' daydream weird but cool. thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif <---3 thumbs up

I thought it was very interesting and original, but it left me feeling very empty and depressed. They were terrible together, but the movie made it seem that you were just doomed to be with certain people, even if they made you miserable. All the characters seemed so hopeless. It was a big downer for me.
BurnSide
That's not the point of the movie at all!!

They were not horrible together they were amazing together. The first part of the movie starts with his memories being erased, from last to first. Naturally they started with his most recent memories of her, which included them fighting and breaking up. Then as the movie progressed you got to see earlier memories of them together and actually see that they were really amazing together when the releationship started, but like most relationships, decayed with time.

In the end he realised he loved her so much that he wanted dearly to cling onto those memories, and tried hard, but couldn't in the end. He realised he loved her more than the world and wanted the memories.

We're to assume she went though the same ordeal. In the end, (or the beginning) they meet up, fresh from the memory eraser, and start to fall inlove. They feel a connection with each other, and even after they both discovered that they had a relationship that ended in tragedy, they were willing to give it another shot.

The point is, there are people out there that you are destined to be with, no matter the obstacles. I hope that gives you a deeper understanding of just what this movie is trying to do. thumbsup.gif

I know it was deeper than my tiny paragraph was able to discuss. laugh.gif Believe me, I didn't entirely miss the point. wink2.gif

But the "destined to be together" part really rang hollowly with me. So the young girl (Dunst's character) is destined to always be in this self-destructive cycle with the doctor? The movie seemed to say that some people are trapped, no matter how miserable they are, with another person. Sure, some of their memories together were happy, but Kate Winslett's character really needed therapy (actually they both were a little off) and I think they were going to be doomed to go through the same thing again. What she said on the tape the dr. kept (about how boring her boyfriend was, and how emotinally needy etc.) is not going to change. They will still be unhappy together, just unable to break free.

Just my two cents; I love to discuss movies. I think the story was very imaginative, though, and well done.
BurnSide
You have some good points Ms. Rose. I didn't think about Dunst's character, or for that matter Wood's character either who was stealing Carrey's characters life and dating Winslett's character.

hahah, i wish i could remember their names. Oh Clementine, that was her name.

Anyway, how about the fact that she had her memory of the infactuation with the doctor erased and then once again became infactualted with him once again is suggesting that we repeat the same mistakes? That could the reason Clementine and Carreys character started seeing each other again, without even knowing they had a pervious releationship that ended in disaster. Humans repeat the same mistakes, it cannot be erased from our memories.

It's an interesting way to look at the movie, but i think i prefer the romantic sub plot of 'if you're destined to be together you will be'. Call me a sucker, i'm fond of happy endings. original.gif

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! original.gif Love has enough ups and downs in real life, no need to have a movie make it harder.

(And the part where he begged for "Just this one memory, let me just keep this one." had me bawling. I, too, am quite a sucker for the sentimental.) crying.gif

But the thing about Dunst's character is that she made a mistake... and she didn't get to learn from it because it had been wiped from her memory. How can you avoid the mistakes you've already made if you can't remember them?
JennRose
Yeah, that's an interesting angle, Disinterested. Forgetting about a mistake only lets you not learn from it.

The movie did a good job to convince me NOT to have my memory erased.
BurnSide
Ahhh!! Good thinking Dis! That's a good way of seeing it.
Love is full of mistakes, hell love is mostly making mistakes, and then learning from the mistakes so that next time you wont make those mistakes again. Mistakes are a very big, important part of love.
Having those mistakes wiped will only lead to more mistakes, whereas holding onto the memories will allow you to learn from them.

And that part 'Just let me keep this one' was SOO sad!!

Me too. I love my memories, no matter how are some of them are, having them erased is like having your whole identity erased. We are what we have learned to be though our mistakes and memories.
ChrisC098
THis movie has really inspired me. I just watched it 20 minutes ago and now everything just feels better. Its taught me too live life to its fullest and not to be vindictive and get mad but try and fix things.
Disinterested
Chris that's awesome. original.gif

There really are some good points in the movie.
ChrisC098
I watched again last night. Its such a great movie.
BurnSide
Yeah. We're buying it. grin2.gif
Disinterested
Yeah man I can't wait to buy it.

It's so worth it!
ChrisC098
Yeah Im gonna get it too. grin2.gif
Elz
Hope this hasn't been brought up for discussion...If it has, sorry...I'm new! grin2.gif

Anyways... who has seen the movie? What was your take on it? Do you think it had closure? Do you think everything tied in together and made sense at the end? I do. I think it's one of the best movies I've seen in a -long- time. What did you think about the whole concept of erasing memories? Do you think it could really happen?

So, how about it? What is your opinion?
Bizeebutt
I enjoyed the movie... but at the end I remember thinking that there were a lot of holes in the plot... it bothered me at the time enough to remember that, but I don't remember exactly what they were
Super Pancake
I loved that movie, the best

The ending was fine by me didn't the secretary Mary of the clinic release the names of the people that got their memory erased. See the movie is kind of tricky its non linear so you got to pay attention. The movie starts of with Joel and Clementine meeting , the thing is they met again after they got their memory erased, so then they go back and forth between scenes in their second meeting and the scenes of the break up and joe getting his mind erased. so in the end when joe and clementine get their files they realised they were once together, and the awkward moment of anger and fear then they get back together.

It was a lovely love story romanticizing that true lovers will always come together, with a sci-fi twist to it.

edit: Oh yeah I think erasing memories can easily come to be one day there are already shrewd techniques to erase memories not in the sophistication of the movie but there are ways.
Elz
Yes, Super Pancake...I liked the moral about loves always meeting eachother again no matter what... it was so romantic... wub.gif

Kirsten Dunst was great in the movie. I always like it when big stars take roles in movies where they aren't the lead. Very professional. She's a great actress, IMO.

I really loved Kate Winslet in it because her role showed her true acting abilities. That she's excellent and all. And what can I say about Jim Carrey? He was superb. All around awesome movie, cast, story-line, everything.

It takes a few watches to really get the complete jest of the movie, I've found.
distortedpandy
I liked the movie...

It messed with me for about a day or so. It made me question, could I do that? I don't think I could, the past is what makes you who you are...
