I'm sure that several of you have heard of the Mapinguari, but I've decided to talk about it. For those of you who don't know, Mapinguari is said to be a giant ground sloth that is still alive in present day. It is reported from south america, and is reported to stand around 6-8 feet tall with a nasty attitude. Several locals report that this animal has a tough hide and that bullets don't hurt it. Ground sloths have been found to have tough, rock-like platelettes just under the skin, which would explain why bullets don't hurt it. It is said to have a haunting cry, and to be aggressive towards people that get too close to it. the locals also report that Mapinguaris favorite type of food is a specific type of nut, (I forget which), and fossilized giant ground sloths have been found to have that same exact type of nut in their stomach contents. Anyway, some suggest the Mapinguari is a form of Sasquatch, but it has been described to walk on the inside of it's hands, as do giant ground sloths. It is also reported to have a thick tail, and ground sloth like features. Any comments/feedback on this issue would be welcome

QUOTE
The deep Amazon jungle of Brazil provides the backdrop for tales of the Mapinguari, a large nocturnal animal with a frightful screaming cry. Locals describe the Mapinguari as about two meters in height when standing on its hind legs. It is covered in red hair and emits a foul odor. Its feet are turned backwards and its claws are capable of ripping apart the palm trees upon which it feeds.

Ornithologist David Oren believes the Mapinguari is real. He has searched for it for twenty years. Oren suggests the Mapinguari is a surviving ground sloth, similar to the (presumably extinct) Mylodon . While the smaller tree sloths still exist, ground sloths are generally assumed to have died out around ten thousand years ago. So far no tangible evidence of the Mapinguari has survived close scrutiny. Link

If this creature exists, and it isn't a giant ground sloth, could I be an unknown species of anteater?

QUOTE
The well-known giant anteater Myrmecophaga tridactyla can reach a length of two meters and weigh nearly 40 kilograms. An anteater twice this size might be a candidate for Mapinguari. Link

Entirely possible. The jungles of South America still harbor species we don't know about. And alot die before we even do...

The anteater theory is all good and well, but it lacks one major component, Mapinguari doesn't eat bugs. It eats fruit and plants

I've also heard the stories, supposedly it has a horrible smell too, because of how greasy its hair is and such. Also I would think its a giant sloth, or it could be a tye of anteater, armidillo (like?), aardvark, or just some really big sloth tongue.gif

mr halo, the smaller animal will be a badger, right? rolleyes.gif

Dog Demon
Not too much like a badger, in my opinion. And that's a baby tapiar, not another species. They're born spotted and striped.

The Mapinguari fits the exact description of a giant Ground Sloth. Large claws, backwards turned feet, a large, thick tail, skin that is hard to pierce, and it is fond of eating a certain type of nut that has been found to be the stomach contents of giant Ground sloths. Plus, Mapinguari doesn't have a trunk like nose like a Tapir.
mr_halo

yeah the claws do certainly resemble those of a giant sloth, and even the smaller sloths of today....must be a type of sloth...

well i think so anyway

Mapinguari

The "caboclos"swear that the "Mapinguari"which is a

giant hairy animal that shouts just like a person, lives

deep in the forest. If someone answers, it will go to

meet the uninformed person. By its description, the

"Mapinguari"does not seem to be very attractive. Who

would ever want to meet up with a creature with one

eye in its forehead and a mouth in its belly button? And

what's worse is that it has such a bad smell that

whoever gets nearby may become dizzy and end up a

easy prey. The "Mapinguari"is ferocious and has no

fear of hunters because it is capable of expanding steel

when it blows into the rifle barrel. They say that it only

runs away when it sees a sloth. What no one can

explain is why it would be afraid of a relative, since it

can be considered to be a prehistoric sloth.

^Found this when i googled mapinguari.

one eye on its forhead? mouth in its bellybutton?huh.gif

disgust.gif i don't know about that,lol.

I think this creature exists. I mean, if the local tribes, who have no scientific knowledge like we have are descibing something that matches exactly with a creature we believe to be extinct, then what's to say it's not real? I mean, 60% of the Amazon remains unexplored, so who knows? And besides, the locals describe the creature as walking on the sides of it's feet. This observation is unbiased and matches the way we know that ancient ground sloths walked. And since they know nothing of giant ground sloths, yet describe a creature that matches it perfectly, they obviously haven't made it up.
