I understand how it becomes fashionable at certaing times to bash humanity and all, but you don't think you are being a bit pessimistic? I'm willing to bet you couldn't spend one day in a truly "anarchic, anti-social, backward, barbarian, barbaric, brutish, crude, disorganized, illiterate, primitive, savage, uncultured, uneducated, unenlightened, unsophisticated, wild" society, without coming back with a deep appreciation for how far we have advanced.

Its a good point aqauatis, however having the knowledge does'nt mean having wisdom, i think the point being made by transform is that we have more knowledge and understanding of the world..possibly even society and yet we still do not behave in a more civil manner

I would still have to say, however, that global humanity has indeed taken great strides in regards to civilization. As a matter of fact, the only examples of outright barbarism that I can think of are a direct result of an isolationist attittude. With the exception of China, none of the world superpowers endorse isolationism, and even China is feeling the consequences of not becoming part of the global stage.

This is kinda silly really. Human beings are extremely civilized, especially when you compare one list here to the other. Yes, human beings bomb other human beings for percentages and greed. But that does not mean that human beings as a whole are not a civilized race. In comparison, there is no other life form known to man that is more civilized.

But we do still have a long way to go before we are trully civilised and intelligent, but burnside is correct we may do horrific things and kill each other but in the ned as a whole we are civilised. to a certain degree anyway!

I'm certianly not barbaric or brutish, thank you very much.

Human begins are not perfectly civilized.They are yet moving towards civilized


But how long will it take.Noone know.Does ants fight one another I think they do but they don't throw bombs at one another.They are uncivilized

Greed is a part of being human. You can't change it or remove it. It's there on the genetic level. Everyone has it.

Greed leads to violence and general "uncivilized" behaviour.

Human beings as we know them have been in existence for roughly 37 thousand years, since that time we have been killing, raping, stealing and plundering, and we will continue to do so for ANOTHER 37 thousand years no matter how hard you try to convince yourself otherwise.

Those that don't see that need to crawl out of that hole they've been hiding in, open their eyes and pull their fingers out of their ears.

And what exactly do you define as "uncivilized"? When I think of "Civilized" I see a bunch of 18th century english noblemen with frilly stockings and powdered wigs sitting around a candlelit table discussing those "uncivilized" Africans.

It's all in how do you define "civilization" and "civilized". I guess we all agree that ouf of technological achievments we are more "civilized" than ever, right?

So, it's a matter, actually, of mental maturity. Even so, though, I believe that human maturity of mind and thought is in a much more advanced level than...say...just 500 years ago. Or 1500.

In the Middle Ages (or in ancient Rome) projects like "Protect the environment", "Help your neighbor". "Collect money for poor children leaving in distand lands" would be considered, if not practically heretical, at least fools' talk. Not to mention the mentality changing itself, the individual maturity of human mind...

We are a civilized society, when we as a hole learn to control our instincts. The fact that some people protest wars, or realize how brutish violent behavior is proves that the human mind is capable of controlling its own actions. Dont put it down to genetics, we are now above thats as a species.

If you're so civilized and advanced...then why are you currently at war? Trully civilized and perfect beings wouldn't have a need or a want.

I am currently not at war with anything, and I doubt there is a person on these boards who is either.

The US is currently at war, not New Zealand, not Brazil, not Germany, not even North Korea, China, Iran or Russia.

Sure that Australia and the UK sent some troops into Iraq, but I would hardly count that as being in war.

Truth be told the US arent in a proper war at the moment because they arent really fighting anyone.

Quite sad that you consider yourself (and others) barbaric! Yes, mankind in general has a lot of flaws, and quite a bit too work on when it comes to how a small percentage treats others. But generally speaking we have achieved a lot in such a short space in time.

Like I said, people judge many on the acts of a few.

To explain what we are you have to look at where we come from ...we come from territorial primates that developed in an hostile media and lived in a terrible struggle to keep a short existence....and that was during dozens of thousand years...of course the traits that favored surviving in that condition are still among us and make us selfish, lusty and in some ways brutal.

I must say, freedom was a huge step away from uncivilization. I think America was a vanguard of all civilizations. But I also will say that back then, there was murder, stealing, corruption, etc.; today there is the same. I don't expect it to change any time soon, either.

I think you've got civilization and utopia confused.

Let's take for example:Taiwan.Why their leaders who are so educated ,yet at the parliament can fights at the public views. Why there are so many countries people going for riots.Why can't their countries governments and their people just sitting together and have a polite way to deal with problems.And come out with a better solution.There are so many people to go for riots yet none of them can come out with a better solution. If both site can just sit and discuss and understand.Many problems will be solve.This can be called civilized.

If country leaders are always able to discuss with country leaders and understand both problems.Many misunderstanding which may lead to hatre and to war can be solve

Why there are so many religions misunderstand and lead to terrorists.Can religions really decide people fate to war and to death of many innocent?Can this be called civilized
