Full Version: Skepticism

I get kind of tired sometimes of people asking me why I am skeptical about things like ghosts and the paranormal.
This is basically just a topic to say that I am only skeptic because I have never seen anything that has proven to me, the existance of ghosts. Sure there are photos, on this site even, but in this day and age it's extremely easy to modify photographs to make them look more surreal. With Photo Editor, Adobe Photoshop and even more advanced graphics programmes, it's not so difficult to get a ghostly face and stick it on a tree, or draw in some *spooky* looking orbs. It's human nature to try and have scandal in our lives and the paranormal is another oppourtunity for people to get excited.
I'm in no way saying 'Stop lying' or 'I hate you all', I am just saying that I find something hard to believe unless I have material proof, photographs used to be that, but with the advanced technology that's now available, this is no longer so. In other words, people can no longer show me an image and say 'look a ghost' because I won't believe it.
In fact, I'm one of those stupidly skeptical people that won't even believe things if they are proven to me whistling2.gif . Probably because I am a little bit nihilistic and it's hard to believe anything after you've read up on nihilism, believe me.
So really what I'm basically saying is that I'll always be skeptical, nothing will stop me, and even if aliens take over the world I will probably still think it's not really happening. blink.gif

There's a difference between skepticism and being closed-minded. It's a good thing you do not believe everything you see or hear- But how can you simply dismiss all of it as false? My view on being skeptic, always keep an open-mind, but don't be gullible. Realize that there are possibilities out there. Why is the concept of Aliens so farfetched? Look up in the sky at night, it's a really vast place. It continues on for who knows how far. And spirits, I believe them because I have my own personal experiences. If you really think about it though, why would you simply regard ghosts as fairy tales? We are all made of matter which cannot be created nor destroyed- so couldn't we be here in a different form after we die, a different energy? I am not saying to believe blindly, just open up your mind. Also, how could you not believe something after you experienced it?

Dont believe the guy that said he was abducted by aliens who brought him to Zorlac 3 and treated him like a king... aliens are notorious for being A-holes.

Hmmm, I guess I am quite close-minded, I don't know why, maybe I'm scared to find things out, or with my current knowledge of the world (which isn't too extensive) I don't think it would be possible but I can see where you're coming from. *Tries to open up mind*

Absolutely nothing wrong being a skeptic original.gif If you're tired ppl asking you why you're skeptic, don't tell them. lol. Of course when you post in a thread, or jump into on convo saying that could never happen, ppl are gonna ask you why don't you think so?
If you can argue over your point of view, then you're skeptic. If you can do nothing but shake your head and just stating no, no no, then you're stubborn and maybe bit close minded...
but, skeptisim is good. Hold on to that, just go bit deeper in your self-analyzing asking why and how guestions. Then you'll be able to make some sense to those too who guestion your skeptisism. grin2.gif

Nah, you're only close-minded if, as CatAstrofix said, you just refuse to even believe in the possiblity.

I don't think you're closeminded. You're at UM after all, eh?

Deadly Nightshade
makes sense Potheler....
unless how else can we learn???
Potholer
Exactly, Nightshade! We can't learn unless we ask questions. If rule something out as impossible, then we never question that thing.

There is nothing wrong with close-mindedness. There is only one answer to the important things. And when people ask me why I am so close-minded, I just say that is is better to be correct than open-minded.
kikuchiyo
I would say i'm opened minded but i ask allot of questions. People who are too close minded are the ones that tried to dismiss science in the 18th century. So much like Da Vinci or Edison, I will freely advance in the venues of was is called "the impossible".

As a designer, I'll work out way to make it possible through machines and technology, as an artist I'll wonder how it could all be possible naturally and as a man of science I'll try to figure out if it's all real.

I simply analyze before making my mind.

That is very true kikuchiyo. And a brilliant stand to take - evaluate the information and don't jump to conclusions.

I'd rather be right than close minded.
