Superman Returns

The new movie, directed by Bryan Singer (Usual Suspects, X-Men 1 and 2), will be a sequel to the first two Superman movies. The story wis about Superman leaving Earth for several years and coming back (hence the title) to find things have changed, possibly involving General Zod. Jude Law is rumoured to be up for consideration for that role.

The 3 picture deal Brandon Routh is said to have signed is said to include two Superman movies with the option of the 3rd been a Batman/Superman crossover movie. Christian Bale, the new Batman in Batman Begins, is on the same 3 picture deal.

I haven't seen Brandon act before but Bryan Singer was pretty adamant about casting an unknown (or pretty unknown) actor for the part (it worked with Wolverine) and Brandon Routh is who we got.

This is Brandon Routh dressed up as Clark Kent/Superman for a Halloween party. He does look quite the part, more so than Tom Welling anyway.

Brandon ‘B.J.’ Routh stands at 6’ 2” and celebrated his 25th Birthday on October 9th. Sadly, this is the same day that “our” Superman Christopher Reeve passed away. And Routh was born in Iowa, which is the same state that George Reeves was born, the original silver screen Superman star.

Routh has had some bit parts in television roles on “One Life to Live,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Will & Grace,” and “Cold Case,” and recently wrapped his first film role in an indie titled “Deadly,” starring alongside Laura Prepon, Misha Collins, and Tess Harper.

Brandon is one of the 6 people WB were considering for the character several motnsh ago back when McG was assigned to direct. He even had a screen test but McG reportedly didn't like him. Maybe he didn't like his acting or maybe he just didn't like the overall feel of him but Bryan Singer has obviously seen something in him.

Bryan Singer also, reportedly, thinks that Kevin Spacey would be the perfect Lex Luther but as far as we know, that part hasn't been cast yet.

And this isn't Brandon Routh but it's so awesome that I just had to show everyone. It's an english actor called Henry Cavill who was up for the role of Superman a while back.

I think he's a better choice than Tom Welling and some of the other's they've come up with or have been suggested. He does have a little look of Reeves about him in some of the images I've seen and in some images he does look really good as Supes.

The problem is that not many actors look like Supes from the comics. Bryan Singer wanted an unknown so that it would be easier to see him and accept him as Superman rather than, for example, 'It's Angel (David Boreanez (He did a screen test) as Superman'. But on the other hand if you got a really talented actor then he should be able to act through the pre-conceptions and all that. Jim Caviezel tested for Supes and was a fave among the fan community for a while but I beleive he turned it down. A lot people didn't want to touch Superman 1) because the movie has gone through hell over the years (it has had several directors, several different scripts and at one point Nic Cage was attached to star as Supes and Tim Burton was gonan direct) and 2) they don't wanna touch Chris Reeves legacy.

Whoever would play Supes would never replace Chris Reeves though (atleast with those who grew up with him as Supes) and Brandon Routh is gonna be up against a lot of high expectations and so on. It is possible he may be able to top Chris Reeves but he'll never replace him.

On a side note Michael Shanks was one of my choices. He's a good actor, pretty unknown (his biggest thing is Stargate SG1) and he looks a little like Chris Reeves. I think he would have made a pretty good Superman but the studio wanted a younger actor (20-late 20's). If they ever do a Chris Reeves biographical movie, Michael Shanks should play him.

Sorry, I know Superman, and this guy aint even close...I am sure he is a nice guy and I have nothing against him personally, but he doesn't look right. He looks too... effeminate. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it just doesn't fit with what superman is...

Superman is supposed to be somewhat good looking, but also geeky and unassuming. He is supposed to be awkward when trying to fit in with a world he was not born to, and to be self conscious when it comes to being the center of attention as Clark Kent.

This new guy is too "pretty" in my opinion to play the part of "the Man of Steel", I don't think it is going to work. The shoes that he has to fit into are just way too big, following up on Christopher Reeve would just be impossible as he was Superman to so many people.

I agree i dont think thaT Routh is good for the role..
He doesnt look the part, and in reality i feel that Tom Welling is the right person to carry the role into the big screen..
The WB is making a big big big mistake...
This is what Superman should look like...

Not Routh... Routh really does look a bit to effeminate...And just doesnt look the part.. Im still a bit upset at having two takes on the character at the same time..
That cheapens the feel of having a Superman for a generation...

I think it's kinda ironic that Tom Wells (who plays high school age Clark Kent) is actually older than Brandon Routh, who they've cast to play 'adult' clark Kent.

Well Welling looks effeminate too and imo Routh looks more like Clark/Supes than Welling.

And Singer has said in a radio interview that he didn't want to cast Welling because he didn't want to make a smallville feature and that he wanted to make a Superman movie... a seperate entity to Smallville...

Singer was also pretty adamant about casting an unknown, prefebley (sp?) in his 20's rather than a rising star or someone who is a star.

When it comes to a Superman/Batman film, which I'm sure it will and it's a possibility in Rouths and Bales (Batman) contract, I can't see Routh or Welling going up against Bale in terms of fighting, performance and chemistry. I would have preffered someone older than Routh, like Michael Shanks, who I think would work well with Bale.

well i heard the interview i think the whole script of superman is goin to suck. supes is suppose to come back to earth after being gone for some time. thas just plain stupid. if thats the case, i want to see the movie when he leaves earth, not the movie when he comes back to earth. in any case, smallville is goin to end soon cuz clark cant be in high school 4ever. he is in his senior year in small's 4th season and then his dad is suppose to die soon. i think the movie should pick up after smallville's season totally ends when clark leaves to smallville and goes to metropolis. then that would be awsome. after that movie is done, they should make the movie when he leaves earth, then after that, part 3 would be when he returns to earth; and of course, tom welling playing the part flawless. thumbsup.gif
