I remembered a story I had read long time ago (it could be 6-7 years) about a Russian plan to launch a satellite that would reflect back to earth an artificial "2d moon" in order to illuminate better the dark winter nights of Siberia. I also remember concerns being voiced regarding commercial usage of the new innovative idea (Picture flashing "McDonald's - Try the new McSpace" sign on the sky).

I guess the plan must have been cancelled due to lack of funds, but I was wondering if anyone knows whether there are any thoughts about future similar projects.

And by the way, what do you think? Is the night sky an absolute "don't touch" field, or it wouldn't be that bad e.g. to have a 2d moon in the sky that would change colors every week? grin2.gif

I remember this as well. I can't remember exactly why the idea was scrapped but I do know that those in the field of astronomy were horrified at the idea because light pollution is already a big enough problem in their fields of study.

Just found this Link.

This sounds like what your looking for...... mellow.gif

Well, yeah...That was the story, indeed.
Article is kinda old though and doesn't say anything about the future huh.gif
Thanx for the effort though thumbsup.gif
