WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A pod of dolphins saved a group of swimmers from a predatory 10-foot great white shark off the northern New Zealand coast, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The unusual incident occurred Oct. 30 when lifeguard Rob Howes took his 15-year-old daughter Niccy and two of her friends swimming near the town of Whangarei, The Northern Advocate said.

The dolphins, "started to herd us up, they pushed all four of us together by doing tight circles around us," Howes told the newspaper. When Howes tried to break away from the protective group, two of the bigger dolphins herded him back, he said.

Howes then spotted what he described as a 10-foot great white shark cruising toward them, but the man-eater was apparently repelled by the ring of dolphins and swam away.

"It was only about six feet away from me, the water was crystal clear and it was as clear as the nose on my face," he said.

Howes realized what the dolphins were doing: "They had corralled us up to protect us."

Another lifeguard, Matt Fleet, on patrol in a lifeboat, saw the dolphins circling the swimmers and slapping their tails on the water to keep them in place. Fleet told the newspaper he also had a clear sighting of the shark.

"Some of the people later on the beach tried to tell me it was just another dolphin but I knew what I saw," he said.

Ingrid Visser, who has been studying marine mammals for 14 years, told the newspaper that there have been reports from around the world of dolphins protecting swimmers. She said that in this case the dolphins probably sensed the humans were in danger and took action to protect them.

Visser, of the group Orca Research, said dolphins will attack sharks to protect themselves and their young. Source.

Thats pretty cool...

Oh! That's so neat! Dolphins are awesome.

I think this is junk, why do people what the whole world to revolve around them, Dolphins could give a crap about people. like your dog wouldn't give a crap about you unless you feed it. Dolphins swim in a pod for protection, from sharks, sharks don't attack dolphind because they pod and defend their young. It's like saying my dog loves me, giving human personality to animals, dogs don't love people, they just know where their food and security come from. people really are sad. Now those people who said that about the dolphins are gonna go have a can of tuna, or haddock or shrimp whos industry destroy millions of dolphins and other unwanted catch fish and laugh and say how stupid why would an animal want to save the thing that is killing them. irony, really bad humor, very untasteful joke.

Actually, it's quite likely...

Dolphins are believed by many to be the second most intelligent animal on the planet, shortly behind (if not on a level with) humans. The scenario quoted above has in fact happened on more than one occassion...dolphins have also been known to volenteer themselves as life rafts for ship wreck victims.

A dog protects its owner, and usually the owner's family, because of the social structure that dogs adhere to....dogs are pack animals, and a household pet is likely to veiw the rest of the family as the pack. Altruism among social animals is a well documented fact, and has nothing to do with who's providing the dog food.

Someone is bitter! But really Syllus, saying an animal can feel love or affection may not necessarily be anthropomorphizing. I don't think feelings are limited to humans. As you said, the world doesn't revolve around us.

Dolphin save man? woa! man who eat dolphin
must feel guilty as hell.

Coyote agrees. Dolphins are smart and delicious.
They give smart where smart is due. Yes.
Celumnaz
I think it's pretty cool too hehe...

Dolphins are amazing creatures and by doing these sorts of things its shows taht in a way they are superior to us, they are willing ti help anoter creature that shares this planet just becasue they can. Now how many humans actually do that, quite a lot ys, but not all, no where near all!
Wouldn`t it be funny if dolphins were as intelligent as us or around about and knew about what we have done to the world and all its inhabitants and yet still chose to help us!
hamellr
Dolphins have also been known to guide ships through rough channels. As pointed above, acted as rafts for those who have been ship wrecked and protected humans from shark attacks.

To say that this was a fluke is really misguided. Just because we can't understand what the dolphins are saying or doing all the time does not make them some dumb animal.
Great Big Sea
Yea Flipper! That's so cool! I mean I would be scared to bits that a great white was near. But I agree with the dolphins are very smart creatures. Sorry that you feel that way Syllus maybe you wouldn't say that if Flipper and co protected you from sharks.
Boo_ Boi
Wonder if a Dolphin would save me??? huh.gif huh.gif
Andy_R
Okay, dolphins are intelligent, but nowhere near the level of humans.
I'm tired of people saying "they're just as smart as humans." Give me a break.
Humans are capable of inductive and deductive reasoning, abstract thinking, etc.
Dolphins are capable of swimming in circles.
And if they're so smart, why do they get caught in fishing nets all the time?

When it comes down to it, they're just as self-centered as the next creature.
Humans are actually capable of being the least self-centered of all life forms.
Some people give their whole lives to the peace corp and going on missions and helping others. Dolphins are mostly concerned about their next meal.
They are not "shortly behind" us. They were still swimming in circles while we were flying to the moon.
Wishful thinking, guys.

More than reading these articles I enjoy reading the debates.. some of them are pretty good, keep up the good work. By the way.. the only thing I feel I should say is that Dogs accept their owners as part of their pack, and not just a food source..
Dowdy
I heard they were talking about the movie rights to this.

Thats going a bit overboard, i think

It's believed dolphins have a language, and are capable of communication, planning, strategising, and deductive reasoning. It's not the dolphin's fault that you're obviously ignorant of the vast number of studies that have taken place to give rise to the veiw of their incredible intelligence in the first place tongue.gif

If we're so smart, how come me murder millions of our own kind in war, allow ourselves to be brainwashed by fundamentalist religion, vote republican, show such intollerance to each other, and mug old ladies for their loaves of bread?

QUOTE

Do you honestly think we're flying on the moon because of human intelligence? tongue.gif Don't be daft...human collective intelligence is frighteningly low. We're flying on the moon because of a tiny, tiny number of people who WERE actually intelligent...if new discoveries and research was left in the hands of the average human, we'd still be scraping out a living in caves, using crude stones as clubs to catch dinner tongue.gif

Ever see that episode of the Simpsons? Dolphins are evil. Snorky will one day rise to reclaim his rightful place as supreme ruler of the Earth!

Wow. Great argument. You win. *rolls eyes*

I vote Republican, and I consider myself to be very smart.
. s p e a k .
From what I've read, Dolphins are the second smartest mammal in the world, even before Chimps.

Dolphins are also being used by the military. I think that's weird. Supposedly they attach bombs to their heads and are able to attach the bombs to the boats, activate that and swim away. Where did I get this? Time Magazine. x__x I was reading it when I was supposed to be doing a test which also had teh artical in it.
Diebytheflyguy
Yes, they are smart, but this does not give a good reason to why they did this? Is it just instinct because usually when they have their babies nearby they automatically protect them, and since there were none, they decided the swimmers were just as worthy to be protected?
Shadowsleet
So you're saying dolphins....the second most intelligent animal on the planet...thought to be able to recognise each other from their "voice" alone from miles away...as Speak said, intelligent enough to be trained to carry bombs to targets, activate them, and then get out of the blast area before detonation...

Can't tell the difference between divers, and their own young? huh.gif

Do they honestly need a reason to do it? It's not impossible that these creatures were motivated solely by altruism

huh.gif You are just setting yourself up for an insult that I just can't bring myself to make.... whistling2.gif

Great arguments against saying dolphins are stupid creatures. Honestly, I think it's just arrogant to think that humans are the only creatures capable of intelligent and logical thought, let alone protective instincts.

And cool article. I almost wish I could have seen this happen. It would have been somewhat surreal for me.

Same as humans.

Like it or not, Dolphins are incredibly intelligent creatures.

Dolphins, Chimps...They're all on the short-bus in comparison to Parrots on the intelligence scale. cool.gif
And I wish people would stop downing Humans so much; some of my best friends are Humans..

i've lived in hawaii for 9 years and never seen a dolphins sad.gif but that storys so cool
Fugu-Fish
I had a friend who was in the navy, he used to train dolphins and the like. He always used to say they were more inteligent than some of the other divers...
sonofkrypton
i have to agree with the majority personally dolphins are proven to be very intelligent creatures, chimps on the other hand seem to be more on the repetition side of smart whereas dolphins seem to show initiative

A bit negitive, arn't we? But, it seems like according to you, only us humans can feel affection or want to protect someone... Hum... Seems like us humans kill more of our own kind then other species, but that is just me.

Talon
I hear that since this incodent, 2 of the dolphins have been killed in fishing nets. Such an enlightened species humans are, we repay other with death.
Q-La
What will an intelligent marine creature evolve into? Do they really have need of tools? I mean how do we know they are not very advanced already in many ways?

Most people that consider themselves to be "very smart" usually aren't.
I, for one, have never considered myself smart...at all. All my friends say im smart, all the time, i just don't see it like they do. tongue.gif

Sad, but true, ok not that sad...we are way too self centered...watch TV look how everything involving an animal has to do with a human someway....even disney movies, they always have some human in the mix...

Delicious?!? what do you mean by that? do you eat them?!?!?
and who is "Coyote"?

anyway, dolphins are amazing creatures grin2.gif and they should be treated with more respect etc. but, sadly i doubt it'll happen any time soon....silly humans...

it's just a promo ,so...over the weekend, abc tv was showing a runners marathon or whatever from sea world in orlando a race they just run around sea world in circles. so the dolphins drew my attention, where do you go to see dolphins, sea world, and while you are there watch abc sports run a marathon, then a plane goes down in colorado with an nbc sports reporter, who used to work for abc, so it went from dolphins to abc to nbc sports all just to draw my attention to monday morning football. what a commercial.
syllus
oh and another, about dolphins and other sea creatures beaching themselves, our science, blah, is experimenting with frequency to instigate animals such as whales, the military wants to use an imitation dolphin or whale call to maneuver these animals in battle to denotate sea mines so their ships can pass through. suicide dolphins.
