This is actually an experience my mom had several years ago...I guess it was about 1990 or so. As far as I know she isn't crazy or prone to hallucinations. wink2.gif To this day it still really confuses her and she would love to get some sort of explation or information.

At this time we lived pretty far out into the country (I do mean the country) and she had quite a commute into work. She usually left around 5:30, while it was still dark, as she did this particular morning in October.

When she pulled out of our driveway (which was directly across from a field) she noticed a long, white line in the sky, above the horizon. (It was the length of about a quarter of her windshield) It was also perfectly straight and glowing, like it was drawn by a flourescent pen.

She noted it was odd, but pulled onto the highway on drove on to work (making the line appear to her left). After a few miles she looked back at the line, only to discover another line had formed above the first. It was running parallel to the other, slightly angled outward, making the lines form sort of a \ / but tilted to the right.

This really confused her. She said it was nothing like a jet track, and it was still completely dark with no hint of sunrise yet.

When she was just a few miles from town (a very small South Georgia town, with pretty much all the residents still asleep) she looked back over at the lines. This time, instead of just lines, there also a funny symbol. She said it was perfect circle, with a triangular piece missing from it, like a pie graph. It was drawn in the same white glowing way as the lines, and was situated above the lines' wider opening.

She stopped to have breakfast, and asked the man behind the counter if he had seen anything unusual that morning. He seemed uninterested, so she didn't pursue the subject. To this day, she wishes she had dragged him out to look at it with her. By the time she finished eating it was daylight and the lines were gone.

So, I ask, has anyone heard of anything like this or seen anything similar? Mom described this phenomena as huge in the sky, since it covered part of her windshield. There were no reports of it in the local papers, and no one has come forward with anything. She swears it wasn't a jet track with the rising sun shining on it, as some people have postulated.

Any help or speculation on this would be most appreciated! original.gif

It is very possible that it was some strange sort of aurora, even though obviously extremely rare in Georgia and anything near the equator, I guess it's possible. It could have been a jet track masked into looking like something else because of the lighting conditions, or it could have been some wild government experiement in seemingly useless sky writing. Stumped, I'm going with aurora.

You might be interested in an album by Gary Wright, where there is a reference to writing in the sky- almost in sync with what you have descibed. The name of the album is "Light of Smiles"- the song is "Phantom Writer," lyrics are hard to locate. If you like I can see if the liner notes has the lyrics to this song, other wise, try to find the album- its a great listen all the same.

Thanks for the guesses. One of the oddest things to me is that (if it was as big as Mom claimed), why didn't more people see it? I mean, it was early in the morning, but there is a major interstate nearby, that always has traffic on it.

Oh well, thanks Convinced for the song, but I can't find lyrics for it on the Web. Seems Phantom Writer wasn't a big hit for him. wink2.gif I'll keep looking around, though.

I once saw writing in the sky...it said "thirsty? drink coke."

I'm guessing it's some sort of alien communication...I feel an invasion is immenent sad.gif

I saw something extremely similar a few years back! I was living in North Carolina in a small town called Wagram. To get to any real city it took a good bit of time (30 minutes to a couple of hours). Well, on our way home from a family trip to Fayetteville, my family and I saw something that puzzled us all. We were driving on a pretty barron road, surrounded by fields, when we caught sight of this aircraft trailing this luminescent glow.....we kept watching as it travelled across the sky, then all of a sudden it seemed to separate into the "V" formation, except it was rounded like it was drawing an eye in the sky. The shape seemed to be 3D as if it separated into many different pieces, but to it only appeared 2D from where we could see. The two points eventually came together and then something just flew away from where all the points joined.

This happened when I was younger, along with some other strange alien things...I'm glad to hear someone describing the same experience!

Here is kind of what I saw.

So you were able to see what formed it....that's one thing Mom wishes she had waited to see, was how it all got there. I'll send this on to her.

Thanks for the post, Moo!

Yeah, but it was hardly clear....it just looked like an alien had a etch-a-sketch in the sky. But it glowed.

No problem!

I totally forgot about seeing old movies that have very old front engine planes flying around doing tricks and writing in the sky, letters, pictures, words, whatever. I don't know if this is actually real, but I suppose they could have added some sort of chemical to the smoke or whatever is used to create the words to make it have a glowing effect, reminds me of a chemical I played around with ages ago in 5th grade, don't happen to remember the name though.

But it was one object that split apart and came back together again only to fly off into space and disappear. Plus it was in the wee hours of the night over the obscure fields of NC....But that is interesting to think about.

I never seen anything like this in the sky. Only weird thing I ever seen in the sky was a light at one time. alien.gif

Since we have so many new members since I started this, I want to bump it up and see if anyone has any new thoughts or suggestions. original.gif

Well, you already killed my jet trails in the sunset hypothesis, so I got nothing. Maybe somebody was signalling Batman. huh.gif

It's possible she was just seeing something mundane and getting it totally confused with something strange. Once, while driving home from work, I thought I was going to get abducted by the moon. And this was only a couple months ago. wacko.gif Saying that, I have no idea what could get confused with symbols in the sky in near total darkness.

I'm stumped.
