John Rhodes Cobb raced both cars and motorboats. On Sept. 29, 1952, John broke world speed records for a motorboat while racing on Loch Ness. As he surpassed 200 mph, his boat disintegrated. He was pulled alive from the lake and died later that day at Inverness, Scotland. His record didn't count because the standards for setting motorboat speed records require the boat to break previous records going opposite directions. A memorial for John Rhodes Cobb stands near the southern end of Loch Ness.
The above is quoted from a webpage about boating at Loch Ness. In the Smithsonian Institute Documentary "Monsters: Myth or Mystery," narrated by Rod Serling, the video of Cobb is shown. Some investigators believed Nessie may have crashed into the boater, causing the disentegration. There are even sonar readings which show he did hit something.
One would almost have to assume this has nothing to do with Nessie, but it is still a little odd. Going back to 565 A.D, when Saint Columbia prayed for God to save a man in the clutches of the Monster, Nessie has been said to have a bit of a temper, including reports of eating sheep.
What do you think?

Well. I hope that Nessie isnt that bad tempered. Or we could have a godzilla like event happening in the UK.

I'd like to think that this really is Nessie. If it is, she didn't do it on purpose.

Alternatively, speed boats regularly disintegrate after wiping out for numerous different reasons. Chances are pretty good that any one of the dozen mundane reasons one witnesses at speed boat race, as opposed to the Loch Ness monster, was responsible for this crash as well.

Okay.
I believe it is possible that alien death rays from Mars caused Cobb's boat to disintegrate (as a good alien death ray should).
I just don't think its very likely.

Actually, I wouldn't trust my eyes in a situation like this. The human mind is way to easy to deceive.
ABeliever, you are entirely too enamoured of the QUOTE function.
In all cases, Ripped asked what we think of the matter, and I think the crash was caused by the same, utterly monster free, causes that all the other boat crashes of this kind are caused by. This is, quite simply, my belief, not my scientific opinion, and as such, I have no reason to defend how I came about it.

Well I have to say we have to balance stuff here, on one side speed boats can explode if they hit the water in an angle, also his boat could have hit a log (which is also the common cause for most sighting of Nessy).
On the other hand, why would nessy attack him, there alot of boats in the lake, bigger and noisier (also sometime stealing It's food suply). If she swims on top of the water it must have been hit a couple of times...(If it's real it would be one badly beaten undersea beast). Maybe the because of the speed it couldn't swim away on time?

Is there pics or a video of the incident?

At that speed anything could cause a crash...a frog or a ripple in the water could do it.
btw, I do not believe Nessie is one creature as you're suggesting rather a "pod" of either Elasmosaurs or Pleisiosaurs who probably have a lifespan of close to a hundred years and migrate to the Loch every now and then.
It's very unlikely these creatures are cuddly little critters as they are carnivores. They will eat you if they have the chace...humans probably aren't on their diet though.

One thing... Don't you think that a boat hitting Nessie with a speed of 200 mph would have caused the disintegration of the monster too? Even if they just touched, there should have been siginificant amount of blood visible at the meeting point on the water... I think the crash would have broken the spin of Nessie in two. That would be surely visible....

There is a video, and I have it on an ancient copy of the Smithsonian Documentary "Monsters: Myths or Mystery." Thats about the only place I've even heard of it, other than the Crooke book. By the way, there was a painting by Boris Vallejo of a lake or sea monster about to attack a man in a boat. ASnyone have it or have a link to it? I had it on an old computer like 3 years ago and I haven't been able to find it since.
