Thanato
Hello,

Are we on the verge of a new Dark age? Are we going to experience a New Dark age soon (with in the next 10-20 years)?

I belive we will.

Now what do you guys think?

Well, I actually ran a scenario of that happening, and it is closer than you might think.
First of all, there is the Ice Age that gonna happen in N. America and N. Europe soon (the Pentagon even wrote a report about it), in the comming 20 years.
Then there is the super-vulcano in yellow stone that is about to explode any moment now (and will destroy most of N. American fauna).
If the lead in world's technology and economy will be Europe and the US by the time those two events will happen, the world will enter a second Dark Age.
If it will shift to one of the asian giants before that (China or India, or maybe even Japan), than we might get lucky enough to not go through those days again.
Darkwind
What do you base that on? Do you mean a "Dark Age" world wide? The first "Dark Age" was in Europe about the time of the christian take over and the suppression of science and philosophy. Is that the kind of "Dark Age" you are talking about?
I don't think we are going have a "Dark Age". Unless they take away our computers. That would be a "Dark Day". ohmy.gif

it wont be a dark age it will be a nuclear age jking i guess it ould happen

A dark age caused by what?

Depends exactly what you refer to by Dark Age. You could make an argument Intellectually, Spiritually and Culturally we've been in a Dark Age since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution..In which case we'd be due for a new Rennaissance rather than a devolution. Only in technology have we gone farther than ever, and I'd still say we can go quite a ways more before that peaks..
Raistlin Majere
I feel that we are approaching a cultural and moral dark age. As for technilogical and material, we're going far quickly. But I always wonder, what's wrong with society if our progress is only defined by technology and material wealth? What happened to culture and philosophy?
strife
Erikl, im agreeing with you, a northern ice age is coming, but i dont think there is going to be another dark age.
CatAstrofix
I agree with many posts here. Tecnology has gone forward with huge steps in a very short time, and is expected to continue so. But when it comes to humans, I think we're almost as undeveloped as the cave-men. I don't think there's another "dark age" to come. We're still in the first one. What mildens things a bit is the gobal communications and connections. What happend in Europe that caused the fist dark age is very unlikely to happen again in a similar way.
Raistlin Majere
Society has ruined humans. It's true, we have wasted ourselves so much, we're no better than sheep. People are foolish, immoral, conformist, corrupt, and weak. People need to wake up or we'll all be facing a REAL dark age.
Dowdy
I think you people have been watching 'Day after tomorrow' too many times.
You can't have a full on ice age in 20 years. It'll take hundreds of years for that to happen. It may get colder in 20 years but not an ice age
Raistlin Majere
Wouldn't a little cooler be a good thing? I mean, we've had all this global warming stuff going on. Maybe the atmosphere is just getting better.
Frosty
No, religion is taking an ever further and further back seat to science. People won't stand for religous authority on such a level as it would diminish the economy.

Depends on what religion you are talking about. In my religion I see it as science is getting closer. I actually use science to explore my religion. I think we are on the verge of a Golden Age.

Culture and Philosophy, sadly enough, died with The Inquisition, and the conversion of other cultures, including the Scandinavians, to Christianity.

It's very under talked about, but at the height of power, Scandinavia and the Vikings were virtually the strongest power on the planet, and never lost until they left their beliefs behind and went on the Christian path. It was then that they started losing battles, and shortly after accepting the religion, they were crushed in a battle against England, fairly ironic since it was in their favor and they had won there many times before.

I see culture only in those that question the trend, and other things around them, and try and see through the veil covering the corruption in our world. Culture and philosophy are in the minds of those, and ones who live in places that are going back or at their original ways, such as Iceland, Africa, and some places in Asia.

I'm not sure it's going to be a Dark Age, but I believe soon the sky itself will darken, weather from terrible fire or nuclear explosions, and I rely on what Nostradamus said when he spoke of the Anti-Christ coming as a young man from the East, he would be the new king of the Mongols, and that unlikely allies such as China and Iran would be forged. We have chaotic times ahead, and the only thing we can do to stop them is protest, and express oneself.

On the topic of taking hundreds of years to make an Ice age, that is not exactly true. The scenario in Day After Tomarrow, although very corny and streched, could actually happen, in the course of probably a year. I read the article and study on if what happened in the movie could actually happen in real life, and the answer was a definite YES. It was in Popular Science, and you can find it somewhere in the archives at www.popsci.com I reccomend reading it, you might become more conservative after.

For your information, the atmosphere is NOT getting better. For example, if the average temperature world wide increased by 10 degrees over the course of ten years, the effects would be devastating. Hypthetically, if the ice in the North Pole sits at 28 degrees farenheight, an increase of 10 degrees would melt the ice and cause a flood of unimaginable size and destruction. The atmosphere can withstand a lot of damage, but then again it can only handle natural amounts, just so much. We are destroying it at an obscene rate, and if we keep doing it, our planet could, well, be unable to sustain any life at all, and turn into a wasteland like Mars, not saying that Mars is lifeless, because I believe differently.

Well, if you ask me, I think you all are a bunch of apocalyptic havoc cravers. Over the centuries, there have been hundreds of end-of-the-world predictions, a lot of gotten publicity, but none have come true. And about the day after tomorrow movie, something like that could very well happen. For all we know, the first ice age could have happened like that, however unlikely that is.

Personally though, I think you people should stop worrying about the weather and start worrying about international relations, especially what North Korea, terrorists and Bush are doing. If you want to make the earth better, then I suggest you convince your own countries (assuming you people are around the world) to go completely over to renewable energy. This would stop a lot of problems. But I seriously doubt we have much to worry about the end of the world as we know it.

I think that humans themselves are going to be fine. My prediction of the future is that eventually humans will get (and use) technology powerful enough to send us into deep-space. Then, we'll end up as a huge colony of marauders, pillaging other worlds like we are doing with earth. I think all these fears about aliens and such (like in movies, the ones in Signs for instance) are only a shadow of what we ourselves will become. I know I really became irrelevant with the space thing but I HIGHLY doubt we have much to fear but ourselves.

Thank you Maekrix for your fresh and individual approach. I personally liked the part about apocalyptic havoc cravers. lol laugh.gif

As you might find out, if you take the time to search the forum, there's a lot of threads about politics and international relations. If you don't find one about renewable energy, please do start one. I might also suggest that if you want to stir some conversation instead of offending debate, you might want to change your tone a bit.

All the ideas (how ever absurd you might think of them) are free to discussion here. You don't have to agree, you can openly disagree, about the topic. Starting to list all the other possible things that we could be discussing over is useless. Don't list them, go and post into relevant threads.

Anyway, welcome to UM. thumbsup.gif

The real irony here? You're talking about conformity and so on, when you stole your nick from a series of novels...

Way to go. thumbsup.gif

wow. i've been to frightened to say (or write) that out loud (except for rantings in school work). I believe you Ristlen Majere. humans are the worst things that have happened to earth.

I don't think we are heading a cultural dark age, in fact i believe the opposite. Internet has given us a change to reach beyond the physical limits and read taos or see the original works of Pollock. Websites like newgrounds or Deviant art gives the common artist a podium for others to see. Forums like this one makes people from all over the world thing about humanity and it's goals.

We are not in the brink of a cultural revolution, ladies and gentlemen, but on the forefront of a cultural evolution. Culture is everywhere, the old "renaissance" was for the rich upper class "monarchy", now I can have access to any contemporen artist.

Humanity is the most controversial being on earth, yes they destroy more then they built but somethings that humans can appreciate are never noticed by others.
