Wooooow I read just about the first 12 pages of this argument and I just had to create an account and say a few things.
First off, for all those people saying, "Well, if the Mayans were so great at predicting things, then why couldn't they predict their own 'destruction'?" I'd like to begin with the fact that the "end of the world" prediction is purely astronomical...I doubt the fall of the Mayans has anything to do with the alignments of the planets...or rather in the case of the end of the world, the alignment of the sun in comparison to the universe. So the Mayans didn't just sit around predicting random events in time like "Oh tomorrow George will come down with the flu and our civilization will cease to exist at X time." They just had a complex calendar and set of beliefs that led them to this prediction.
Secondly, I'd like to give a little spiritual input on the whole argument. I have heard a lot of points on this board that I agree with and like very much...but I'd like to add a little. I believe, at this point in my life ....of course beliefs are always changing, that the end of the world will be the end of the world as we KNOW IT. As in, I love the idea of a more enlightened human population. We as a human society and as beings will be less materialistic and...more, well enlightened, for a lack of words. I love that whole idea, but I want to work a little Christianity into it....except reverse it. Christianity has a belief, and correct me if I'm wrong, that there will be an Apocalypse and all the good Christians will be sent up to heaven to be with God while the others are stranded on Earth for seven years to suffer and reflect on their errors...and the wicked will be damned, the blessed be rewarded....and that's a little summary. Well, what if it's sort of the opposite.
If you research into metaphysical beliefs, there is a belief that souls reincarnate. They reincarnate over and over again and during each life their soul learns something new...and grows. We don't know what these lessons are because we're too....human to understand lol. But anyways, there are older souls and younger souls. Younger souls tend to be either religious fanatics or atheists...the two extremes of naivety (word? Yes or no? lol). Older souls inhabit bodies that are more sensitive to the…I don’t want to say paranormal. *sigh* I don’t know how to put this without making it sound loony, but these people are more laidback….spiritual…enlightened….enlightened is the perfect word in this situation!
Anyways where I’m getting with this is, at the end of the world, the Earth will cleanse itself of the younger souls and be inhabited by the older souls. These souls will be strong and wise enough to uphold a more enlightened society. I know I’m not explaining this correctly…because I have the ideas in my head, but words fail me. Anyways, you could possibly get the point that there will be an Armageddon, but…only the weak will be killed off until their souls are ready to return to this new, more loving Earth. Maybe they’ll go off onto another plane to finish off their learning so that they may join the older souls.
There is spiritual evidence that souls are splitting and living multiple lives at once. For example, my mom has reason to believe that her soul is inhabiting another man up in New York who she hasn’t met yet, but has “seen”. We’re going to find out if he really exists or not…oh man I know this sounds so crazy to everybody reading this lol, but if you open your minds to the possibilities! Also, I’ve witnessed a shift in my being from when I was younger to my older age…I believe my soul sort of learned a lesson in the first part of my life and has now matured and is living out another as we speak. The point behind this is that souls sense the end of this world and are trying to get in as many lessons as possible.
Either way, I know I’ve mixed a bunch of stuff together not even nearly explaining it to a point where you wouldn’t think I was crazy…but the point is, I think the end of the world is going to be a great thing and I can’t wait for it! It’ll be the end of the destructive, materialistic lives that most of us lead these days. I’m excited for a more enlightened world…I’m not scared and I do believe in it. I’m not even sure when. 2012 doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but it’d be really neat if it was that close. Others have predicted farther in the future. No matter what, I know things have gotten bad on this planet lately….though they’ve sort of always BEEN bad, I think everything’s headed in a right direction.
Sorry this was so long…and if anybody’s even following this thread anymore, I’m sure there’ll be a lot of questions and opposition to this. The only thing I can offer you is to study world religions and reflect on yourself really.
My beliefs, as I said earlier, aren’t even concrete, but up until recently I was an atheist and having a spiritual side at least takes away some of the fear associated with this world and with some religions.
Hope this helps in the discussion
PS...I'm a college student from a middle class family, i do not suffer from any mental problems....i play field hockey, do show choir, and i have friends haha. this isn't coming from a nutcase, just hours upon hours thinking at night and having discussions with my mother who's an expert in world religions.
