Police say South Haven teacher 'wed' 14-year-old girl in pagan ritualAssociated Press

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — A teacher and a 14-year-old former female student whom she is accused of sexually assaulting participated in witchcraft together and even "wed" in a pagan ritual, police said.

Elizabeth Miklosovic, 36, a teacher at South Haven's Baseline Middle School, was arraigned Thursday on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Van Buren County.

If convicted, Miklosovic faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. She was ordered held on $100,000 bond and remained in the county jail Friday.

Also Thursday, the Kent County prosecutor's office issued arrest warrants for Miklosovic on charges of first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct that accuse her of performing illegal sex acts with the student at the teacher's Grand Rapids home.

Miklosovic lives with another woman and their adopted son, authorities said.

The student told a classmate about the relationship and the classmate told school officials, who placed the seventh-grade language arts teacher on leave from her job. Miklosovic has worked for South Haven Public Schools for three years.

The student told Michigan State Police that she and Miklosovic had about five sexual encounters from June to October in the teacher's home, a park in Van Buren County and a state park in Manistee County.

Although the girl was in Miklosovic's class in the past, the sexual contact did not occur until this year, authorities said.

Miklosovic has no previous criminal record in Michigan, state police records show.

She declined to answer reporters' questions after her arraignment.

James Becker has been appointed as Miklosovic's attorney. Contacted Friday at his Paw Paw law office, Becker declined to comment about the case, saying he had not yet seen the police report.

The girl's family said Miklosovic brainwashed the girl into thinking the two did nothing wrong. A relative told The Grand Rapids Press that the family initially believed Miklosovic's interest in the girl — who was described as vulnerable and as having emotional problems — was to help her.

Detective Sgt. Diane Oppenheim of the state police post in South Haven said the student came to trust the teacher so much, she agreed to "marry" the woman in a pagan ritual.

"They also participated in witchcraft together," Oppenheim said.

Her preliminary examination on the Van Buren County charge is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Your analogy is abit twisted, we can get rid of hunger through education and peace (therefore making agriculture possible), but we can't deal with perverts the same way, we could try to educate them (which would be the best idea according to me) but there's always the possibility of them failing and going back to what they do. (lets just try to restrain there contacts with kids, like offering them new jobs [with adults/ adults school and stuff] under supervision of feds.)

My grandmother was married and had a child when she was 15 years old...that was not considered odd at the time...Different times and different cultures I guess...

The woman was in a position of trust and abused it. She preyed on a child who by all accounts was shy and withdrawn. Lock her up!

Correction, I normally say hang them high or let them fry when I read about dispicable and inhumane acts to another human. This is my opinion. You do the crime and you pay.

As has been pointed out girls used to wed young, Used to.... This is a 14 year old in society now, who has been sexually abused and been involed in pagan rituals with a 36 year old woman. Regardless of whether it was with a woman its still what it is...abuse. Regardless of some Pagan ritual its still abuse. If this had been a man there would be an uproar, to me its the same thing.

I disagree completely. I think that if it had been a man it would have been backpage news. I've seen it before. Man molests boy, frontpage news. Man molests girl, backpage news. I've pointed it out to people on numerous occassions which is why I'm sure of what I saw and read and where it was in terms of frontpage to backpage new status.

As for people marrying at the age of 14, we are now involved in an "occupation" of a country (Iraq) where it's considered normal for girls (yes and I do mean GIRLS, children by our standards) to get married at the age of 13 without their consent. They're given away. Period. Are we going to stop all of that? Tell the people in Iraq they can't do this anymore? I mean, they rioted when they were forming their new gov't, when it was made clear that wife abuse would be against the law. RIOTED! I really doubt much will be done or said about the age at which their girl children are being given away in marriage.
Then there's the ongoing reports and laws broken all over the state of Utah, concerning 40+ year old men marrying their 13 year old nieces or grandnieces (some with as many as 12 brides)!

No.
Once in awhile we'll see a special report on some OFF station (Link TV or the like) concerning the issue, but no one does a thing. I never hear anyone even talk about it. The few times I've brought up when discussing child abuse, people shrug and say, "Oh well, it is Utah."

I agree with the person who said the woman hadn't been tried yet and we should wait and see what happens.
Agreed, she should be put in jail if indeed she committed the crime but the question is, did she commit the crime? If not, all this bruhaha is about nothing but I can guarantee you that no one will remember she was found innocent.

BTW, why is it that this woman, if convicted, should be put away for life when Mary Kay Letourneau served the maximum sentence for child RAPE which was 7 1/2 years! She's out and about, apparently dating the boy (now of age) she went to prison for raping...
But this lady has to spend the rest of her life in jail? Why? What's the difference between Letourneau and this woman except the sex of the child?

i think its odd how you say this man should be locked up for marrying a 14 yr old, when your sig says that marriage is about love, not anything else, including age. isn't that a contradiction? (not saying that i support the guy who did it)

I have a question. You said that you normally say, "Hang them high," or "let them fry."
I couldn't help but notice that you live in the U.K.
When I lived there 15 years ago the U.K. had gotten rid of the death penalty. As a matter of fact, I thought it was mandatory to NOT have a death penalty in order to belong to the European Union as well.
Did the U.K. change this policy and bring back the death penalty?
If so, how is it that England is still a part of the European Union?
OR, is it still true that the U.K. still doesn't have the death penalty, but you disagree with Britains policies regarding this issue?
Sorry if this seems off topic but you seem like a person that upholds the laws of the land, thus your attitude of "Let them fry," seemed a bit odd to me.

Hi Fayd,

Unfortunately you are correct in saying that Britain had got rid of the death penalty and it is still as it was when you lived over here.
Unfortunate because I for one want the death penalty re-introduced, criminals over here get away with things that they shouldn't.
The legal system over here protects criminals rather than its victims and the sentencing is far too lenient, to the point of Paedophiles being re-introduced to society after 5 years of their 10 year term!?! (give me a break!) Also the prisons are full to breaking point with monsters who don't deserve to ever breathe the air of their victims and costing a fortune on tax payers money.
So when I say let them fry or hang them high I mean this as how I see the punishment should be fittng the crime.
