And now screenwriter John Rogers has chimed in at Murphy's board...

"John Rogers here. Let the angry flaming begin.

A few things off the bat. First off: I KNEW that CATWOMAN credit would come back to bite me in the ass. To tell you the truth, I haven't actually even seen the CATWOMAN movie. Let's leave it at that. Don't get me wrong, I liked the people and appreciate the check. But, err, no.

(And don't slag THE CORE. I liked THE CORE. It was one of my first assignments as a young writer and I'm very proud of it. That and creating JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES )

Look, we've got to both respect the massive fanbase and mythology of a twenty-year legacy, at the same time expand it in filmic ways, and streamline it for a new audience who wouldn't know G1 from Dreamwave with a gun to their head. Look at that Citroen commercial -- why shouldn't we make this movie so the big bots become current in today's culture, rather than treating them as some artifact? There's plainly a zeitgeist for it out there. There should be, after this movie, another whole generation of Transformers fans.

Now, to throw you ravenous jackals some marrow. What little marrow I can without ticking off the powers-that-be. Some random stuff, with a few obscure clues for you to chew over:

Yes, Mr. Spielberg is very involved in the movie. He pitched out a couple very cool ideas during the development of the story. It's a huge frikkin' honor to be working for him, and know he takes this project very seriously.

G1. G1. G1. Period. Finito.

Size-shifting is an integral part of the movie, but basically on a scale that'll allow the transformations from earth-disguise vehicle forms to robot to make sense. Some of the power-scales of the Transformer megaweaponry here in my Simon Furman-penned guide sitting next to my computer would be a little ridiculous in a live-action movie. But I want big robots. You want big robots. We'll have some very big robots. And they will fight. I'm writing big-robot-fights. There are some days my job couldn't get cooler.

Ark? Check. Cybertron? Check. Energon Matrix? Check plus, actually. Think more about what it means in the greater sense of Transformer identity and sentience. We won't mention Primus, but that points you in the direction of why the Autobots and Decepticons want it, more than just a leadership squabble. As in: "Spark."

As to who's showing up -- If you want real, well-defined characters, we need to spend more time on the personalities of each Transformer as a charcter. Autobot faction, Decepticon faction, and humans, they all need to come across as real, um, "people." So, much like the X-Men model, a tight focus on a few leads, with an expansion in the possible second and third movie to a bigger roster.

Having said that, why wouldn't I want a cool shapeshifting spy Decepticon? Although, you know, cassettes are so passe ... I think he'd adapt a bit more ...

Freedom IS the right of every sentient being.

Who's the coolest two-seater high octane brother? I'm asking you.

And one small change -- from ambulance to fire truck. Fire truck's more interesting on-screen and to watch transform, and they're both emblematic of his personality, so I think you guys will forgive me. Or at least, I'm asking you to right now.

(this is representative of the only changes we're allowing in the movie from mythology. When we change something, we have to keep the spirit of the original intact. Don't worry, Tom and Don are breathing down my neck constantly ...)

Witwicky -- check. Witiwicky girlfriend -- modified check. Human characters in general -- like most of you have noted, not exactly the strongest factor in the original cartoon. So a lot of new ones, but they'll be vaguely familiar to fans.

No little kid sidekicks.

There will be Easter Eggs.

Some of the Decepticons don't seem that bright. Some are an absolute scream.

Megatron as a gun -- not going to happen, for the stated reasons. Alternate forms of 'Bots than just the two ... could be.

Well, that ought to keep you busy arguing among yourselves for a while. I'll check back in later this month, see ho things are going.

Thanks for all the support and interest,

john"

He also later added...

"Missed one of your questions.

"2. on a scale of 1-10 , predict how dark this movie will be?"

Decepticons think humans are ... squishy. Enough said."
TheCrow
John Rogers screenwriting credits include The Core and Catwoman. Now I liked the Core for what it was. A stupid popcorn disaster movie. I haven't seen Catwoman and don't want to but I have read that John didn't come up with the story for Catwoman. He just basically got paid to type up the screenplay for WB, which has probably tarnished his career for years to come but if it's true I don't feel the same way about him writing it anymore. I'm still a little weary, naturally but I have more confidence in him now. Anyway, he's adapting a story outline provided by Tom DeSanto who helped to write X-Men 1. Also Steven Spielberg is producing.

I'm ok with this. A big robot transofrming into a gun and changing size so he can fit in another robots hand would look silly anyway. Plus it isn't really a very praticle transformation anyway because if there was no other Decepticons around, he wouldn't be able to fire. lol. Plus you would have thought the leader of the Decepitons would be something more than a gun. A tank would be cool as long as it's not that stupid purple and green version.

This is gonna be so cool, I can't wait.

Oh my god! A transformers movie! I GOTTA TROW UP!!!!!!!! How can anyone watch a show about cars transforming into robots. Even the Power Rangers are more original then that.

For some samples of the potential for the effects for a Transformers movie take a look at these things below.

Sports Car Transformer
(Click to go to website)

An looped animation of a sports car transforming and then back to car. Not as good as the others but thought I'd provide it anyway.

Citroen C4 Transformer (advert)
(Right click and save as)

This is a download of the Citroen C4 advert on air in the UK (dunno if its aired anywhere else) but the car transforms and dances. It's a little goofy but ultimately it's a cool clip with decent and seamless animation. It reallys proves there is potential for the Transformers movie.

VW Beetles Transformer w/ Gun and shield - 1.5Megs
VW Beetle Transformer w/ Gun and shield - hi res 4.7Megs
(Right click and save as)

A short clip of a WV Beetle transorming, pulling out a gun and the Autobots logo flashing on to his door shield. The entire thing, escept the actual location which was filmed beforehand, is computer animated. A pretty decent animation.

Credit to Michael Smith at http://www.themichaelsmith.com/ for the above VW clip which he made. He also has other animations on his page including insects, a dancing turtle and monsters fighting.

Not really true as the Power Rangers was based on a Japanese show called Sentai dating all the way back to the 70's. In fact Power Rangers is half the Sentai show. They used the Japanese monster, zord and costumed fight scenes and filmed their own converstation scenes with american actors. Only the PRs movie is 100% original stuff.

That is also why in Mighty Morphin PR, only Kimberly, The Pink Rangers costume had a skirt because in the japanese show the Yellow Ranger was a guy.

How realistic would it be to have Megatron as a gun? c'mon, think about it. Sure if you want to remain absolutely 100% faithful and I know that it's a fantasy concept in the first place but it's not realistic to have him transform into a gun and also shrink in size so that another Transformer can fire him. It's pretty stupid and would just never work in film. He will probably be a tank and maybe some other vehicles with a gun attachment.

The two original voice actors for Prime and Megatron were attached to reprise their roles when this movie was first announced but their names have since been taken off the project. Maybe there was a problem of some kind in their contract, who knows. Hopefully they will come back though.

I am looking forward to this movie. To be honest, I liked the show but was never a big a fan of it as Thundercats. But I am looking forward to this movie. I think it will be the blockbuster of the summer, I'm assuming it will be released in the summer as this is the exact type of movie that is normally marketed and released during the summer period.

We all know the real reason this movie is been made though... Merchandise which = money. There will be lots of new action toys and it will catch the interest of kids who didn't grow up with it.

"How realistic would it be to have Megatron as a gun? c'mon, think about it." Good point! Really goo- oh wait! Devastator! Yeah he could hold him(in fact he did atleast once in the series)! So why won't he be a P-38...hmmm. Oh yeah Because they can't sell life-sized toy guns in the U.S. without orange on them(thats why my Commemorative Series Megatron came from outside of the states)! They don't want to make characters that can't be made into plastic toys with no launching missiles or small accessories for hasbro. Also, Megatron being a tank would be stupid since him and Prime couldn't slug it out(unless he were a Renault but a 1917 tank wouldn't fit too well). Where'd he get that quote? It should be "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings". Ratchet as a fire truck? Stupid, but I'll live. I just can't for a "Pathetic flesh-creatures! -> fusion cannon here <-" scene. I've ranted enough for now. Hope the movie doesn't get cancelled(or piss me off with cheesy "Mega-bum" comments).

I for one dont mind some adaptaion, as long as Megatron stays grey, I guess it would be perfect if he were to look like Dreamwave's War Within.

I heard that there would be 7 characters of each faction, let's guess who:

Autobots:

1. Optimus Prime (Duh)
2. Bumblebee
3. Jazz (if I rely on this board)
4. Ratchet (as a fire truck? or is it optimus prims as a fire truck? niether would fit that definition though...)
5. Sideswipe (if i rely on the video by mazda)
6. his brother (i forgot his name)
7. ??? I'm a bit clueless... Hound?

Decepticons

1. Megatron
2. Starscream
3. Soundwave (a bit hard with no size changes, but has to be there)
4. Constructicons , erh, Devastator (let's count this as one tongue.gif)
5. Skywarp
6. Thundercracker (why not those two)
7. And oh, I should've mentionned earlier, Ravage (if i rely on news mentionned here)

How does that sound to you?
