Full Version: Turn the other cheek

I am enraged when the Bible says, even in the New Testament, that we are to “turn the other cheek,” to forgive those who wrong us. To me, that sounds like someone is trying to run a scam on me.

This is an extremely common myth. To understand this, you must look at the day and age. Back in the time of slaves and masters, it was considered an extremely unacceptable practice to hit your slave with your left hand. If a slave master hit his slave, and the slave turned his other cheek to him, he was in essense making them equal, because anyone who found out that the master had hit his slave with the left hand after the slave turned his head would consider him lower than the slave himself.

Yes, we are to forgive, but not in the manner people believe in this speciffic situation. We are to show the one who pruposefully hurt us that they are our equals. We are to put them on common ground. If the slave in question wasn't a slave, but a fellow slave master, and the other slave master hit him, they would most certainly battle it out. SLave masters would never hit each other in this way because they recognize they are both equals. Obviously, in the eyes of God, all humans are equal. Slaves and masters should never exist. But on the earthly scale of equality, we have people in authority over us. If they treat us poorly, we are not to let them to continue to step over us, but we are to show them that we are equal to them.

Hell, if someone slaps me in the face, I'm not going to stand there and take it. That's just foolish and asking for trouble. I'll punch them in the throat. If they are bent of fighting, I'll give them a fight. If I can get out of it by talking, I do. Both of these actions put us each on common groud. In the first example, I put the person at my level physically. In the second, I outsmart the person who is physically above me.

I'm not saying God wants us to beat people up when they hit us by any means. But God doesn't expect us not to defend ourselves. That's just stupid.

Defense and offense have a very fine line. If your "bully" stops hitting you after you hit him, and stands his ground, you have done your job. If you continue to hit him after you have made each other "equal", then you become the new bully, and he has every right to fight you back.

The showing of the ass would be great, unfortunately, it puts one in the dnagerous situation of getting one's ass kicked.

Now, if one could mount some sort of offensive device in one's ass...
