Full Version: What 10 Books Would You Save?

RobertGoerman

Imagine that, for whatever reasons, you have to reduce your personal library on the paranormal to ten books. Maybe there is a raging fire or rising flood waters. Pretend that you only have mere seconds to snatch-and-grab just ten titles from your collection. No time to ponder. What titles would you save? What do your choices say about you?

Let's see . . .

1. The Ghost Hunter's Guide by Peter Underwood (don't have the newer one by the American guy from Illinois)
2. A Gazetteer of British, Irish and Scottish Ghosts
3. Coast to Coast Ghosts
4. Young Ghosts (okay, I don't actually own that one, but if I did I'd save it)
5. Irish Ghosts
6. Celebrity Ghosts (hmm, I'm seeing a trend here <g>)
7. Haunted Heartland
8. National Directory of Haunted Places
9. Lord (somebody's) Ghost book. (why can I NEVER remember that man's name???!!!)
10. The Most Haunted House in England.

And if I were being attacked by a paranormal-book eating chupacabra, for example, I would start fending it off by throwing it anything I had written by Hans Holzer, because he annoys me. wink2.gif

Charles Bowen, ed. The Humanoids , FSR, 1969
That's all you need, though some of the books about Roswell are interesting, especially the one by Colonel Corso. I will now fill out this list with books about Psi, because the subjects of UFOs and Psi are really one. The only reasonable method of star travel requires levitation and teleportation, both powers of the mind. In no particular order:

Ian Stevenson, Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation , U. of Va. Press, 1967, often reprinted. Scientific proof of reincarnation.

Raymond Moody, Life After Life, often reprinted, usually in print. An earlier study on NDEs by Albert Heim, a 19th C. Alpinist is also good if you can find a copy.

Shafica Karagulla, Breakthrough to Creativity, de Vorss, 1969 I think. The essential book on HSP, the ability to see auras, as well as X-ray vision into physical objects, by light or day. A natural mode of perception (one of 2) in the OOB state

And of course, my own book, Jumping Lightyears . There, that's enough to get you started.

all my books by Graham Hancock and the Concise World Atlas by Rand McNally so I can follow Graham Hancock's story line. After all if you can only save ten books then one might as well save those that provide a record of how we came to a place in history that allows us such a choice rolleyes.gif

I have a few paranormal books, but none I can remember of the top of my head! But I have over a 1000 paper and hardback novels. I have at least 3 books on the go at once – one in the bathroom (for deep undisturbed reading, lol) and at least two next to my bed. I jump between books depending on what mood I’m in. And even with three books I will be hard-pressed to take more than a week to read all three! So to pick only ten would be near impossible. Even when I moved to Mexico I left everything, all except my collection of books! But it would be at least one Michael Connelly, one Stephen King (I’m reading Dreamcatcher at the mo), and one Terry Pratchett (I’m also reading The Wee Free Men at the mo). And the third book I’m also reading this week is Michael Connelly’s The Poet.

*The Lucifer Society - edited by Peter Haining thumbsup.gif
*Dark Forces, New Stories of Suspense and Supernatural Horror - edited by Kirby McCauley thumbsup.gif
*Tales of the Uncanny and Supernatural by Algernon Blackwood thumbsup.gif
*Ghosts, A Treasury of Chilling Tales Old and New - selected by Marvin and Saralee Kaye thumbsup.gif
*Haunted Heartland
*Irish Tales of Horror - edited by Peter Haining
*Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe
*Victorian Ghost Stories by Noted Women Writers
*Devils and Demons, Fiendish Tales selected by Marvin Kaye
*The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton

Let me tell ya, it wasn't easy narrowing down my library, but these are definitely some of the best anthologies you will ever read. I highly recommend "The Lucifer Society" and "Dark Forces" (both of which are out of print) to any hardcore fan of supernatural and horror stories. "The Lucifer Society" actually contains a short tale of horror by Sir Winston Churchill called "Man Overboard!" I would also say to anybody looking to expand their library of scary stories to look for books edited by Marvin Kaye and Peter Haining. Their taste in terror is exceptional.
