last night I watched a special on these weird things called rods or skyfish some think they are rodlike insects that swim through the air with paddles on each side of there body going to fast for plain sight many people have slowdown frames on tapes and claim to see them whizzing by~ I thought this was pretty dumb at first and still think it is but I looked online and oddly enough they have a large graphical website and club with movies and slideshows here-
roswell rods .comwhy don't you take a look?
notice the slideshow

I can't believe I have found a place to explain the object I saw and it has a name. I live in southeast Michigan and about 4 yrs ago I was cleaning my pool and I saw this insect flying around me. I had never seen one that looked like this. I love unusual bugs and try to catch them whenever I can. I can only describe it with what I know, it looked simular to a dragon/maidenfly only much longer and thinner, about 7-8 inches long with one set of wings near the front and large eyes. I noticed that over the next couple of days this insect was hanging around, so finally I grabbed my hand skimmer from the pool and tried to catch it. All of a sudden this thing stopped on a dime and turned around and came at me with lightning speed. Of course I turned and ran screaming. After that I haven't seen one since. I asked several friends of mine who have for many years studied insects for a living and they had never heard of the insect I was describing. Now I know what it is and I will be on the look out and this time I will try harder to capture one.

That sounds like it could have been a dragon fly but I have never seen one that big in Michigan before (Originally Portage/Mattawan area). I have seen some down in Texas that came close to being that big.

I thought some photographers/videographers had debunked Rods as nothing more than winged insects, but due to the fact that they flap their wings so fast, it would cause an optical illusion, since video cameras only record at a certain frame rate.

This topic is over two years old.

I guess that I could have considered it a Dragonfly except for the fact that they have heads and this thing didn't. The thing that I saw had an extremely long body, two eyes and one set of wings, NO HEAD. Unless the southern states have a mutated version of a Dragonfly and it happened to hitch a ride on a 747 to Michigan then I guess it is possible. But I doubt it.
