The Mayan were one of the most astronomically advanced civilizations of the ancient world, so I wouldn't be surprised if they predicted some sort of cosmic collision and thus marked that date as the end of the world. The Egyptians and Sumerians were also fairly astronomically advanced. It's entirely possible. We'll see, won't we?

Well obviously they all died and Jesus never returned.

That hasn't stopped people from predicting the end of the world now and again.

The 2nd coming was supposed to be in the lifetime of those that witnessed jesus.

Well most denomination would say yes; that even Christ does not know the time of his coming. Which of course brings up the nice question of "Since Christ is God; how come he doesn't know God's thoughts?" and other fun questions that cause nice respectable ministers to get into brawls.

The fact is, the world has seem to be growing darker each coming century. I don't believe the "end" is that near at all, but even a fool can see that barbarism, heartlessness, and discrimination are spreading. Those brave enough to fight it, bleed. The only way to combat it and push it back to where it came is global alignment, and I forsee that to never take place. It seems as though we have brought our own demise upon ourselves.

I have a good understanding of the bible. I have and continue to read it regularly, but the bottom line is that there are many major mistakes in the bible that cannot be accounted for. Jesus did say he would return in the lifetime of those that witnessed him. You can play with the words all that you want, but the bottom line is that jesus did not come back when he said he would. 2000 years later folks are still waiting for a return, and I find it amazing.

It is evident that the end is near. today dec 26,2004 the most devastating earth quake on the scale was 9.8 or 9.1 (one of them). creating 30ft tidle waves,killing some 3,000 ppl. and the number is increasing. the waves hit the coasts of sri lanka,india,bangladesh and two more.

Yes, because 9.1 earthquakes in the ring of fire never happen. That's not a sign of some end to come... that's a sign of the tetonic plates realesing some major stress.

Just like when a volcano erupts. It's a natural prossess. It happens.

2. What does the Pope mean when he claims that he is the "Vicar of Christ"?

1) No, the pope is a member of our sinner family that needs salvation just like everyone of us, just like Peter the first pope.
2) Vicar of Christ is the one leader that is acting chief of the church on behalf of Christ.

I am of the Christian faith, but I left the Catholic persuasion long ago. Mainly because I don't feel comfortable with calling anyone, "Father" except the Father himself.

How is it "evident" that the end is near? quakes like this have happened before, even bigger ones too.

Jesus was a man with good moral values, the old and new testament stole mythologys from other ancient religions and claimed it as there own. Nothing more, the bible is just a history book.

The material appearance of war, corruption and pollution is but a reflection of the inner mental activity of humanity as a collective.

The 'second coming' will not be a physical manifestation but a mental (spiritual) realisation.

And a rather poor one at that!
