MPAA Bit Torrent Offensive
Long awaited tracker attack begins
Written by Karl Bode
The MPAA is expected to launch a new offensive today, filing civil suits against the operators of Bit Torrent trackers. After trying fairly toothless DMCA warnings against Bit Torrent users, the MPAA will head to the source and target the trackers themselves.

The effort has been long expected. Fleeing the legal assaults of the entertainment industry the past year, many users of p2p clients like KaZaA have returned to more familiar hauntings: newsgroups and IRC. Others fled to Bit Torrent.

As evident by postings in our forums, many of those users believed the technology offered them a degree of anonymity.

Those assumptions were incorrect; anyone with a Bit Torrent client can see the IP address of every other user connected to the same tracker, allowing the MPAA to send those users DMCA warnings about sharing pirated materials.

Whether coming via Cox or Comcast, the DMCA letters are all generally the same. Both recent examples target torrent film and television episode traders, and both inform users they won't suffer any punishment if they simply delete the offending material.

"We are writing on behalf of Cox Communications to advise you that we have received a notification that you are using your Cox High Speed Internet service to post or transmit material that infringes the copyrights of a complainant's members," a letter politely informs one Cox user.

"Cox will suspend your account and disable your connection to the Internet within 24 hours of your receipt of this email if the offending material is not removed," the letter adds.

Well untill they send me a personal threat I'll keep on downloading. I'm sure most of the stuff I'm downloading is permited by the producers because it's mostly conspiracy/politic al related. Even then I'll probablly just try to find a way around it.

actually , its down for good . user posted image

Apparently the forums are down now, along with youeff, phoenix, torrentbits, demonoid etc. Theres only two sizeable sites left as far as I can see. Pirates Bay is still ignoring the cease and desist letters for now http://static.thepiratebay.org/legal/ and Loki is trying to raise funds for legal fees.

tis sadly true , this attack on bit torrent is a lot more massive then I first realized . We all had hopes this would be just another baseless threat but apparently its turned out to be an all out assault by the masters of greed . Tons of bit torrent sites were shut down . All I can say is I hope Isohunt doesnt get attacked .

This is really assinine for them to do this , especially because its unfair to people like me who used suprnova and other bit torrent clients to dl freeware and old apps that are not available in stores anymore . True suprnova had a lot of piracy going on , but they also had a lot of basic and harmless files up for grabs as well .

Isohunt is currently the only bit torrent site still working that is comparable to suprnova . Im going to grab a few files now before it all goes kaput ... luckily the riaa is wasting their time since we will , just like with what happened to kazaa , find an even more efficient way to steal ( my guess is a hybred of p2p netwroks like kazaa , bit torrent , and IRC )

The big reason for the recent witch hunts is because many bittorrent clients are slow to make changes to the BT protocol to decentralize bittorrent.

E-mail the author of the clients you use to add the 'get_peers/peers' extension to their clients. This removes the need for trackers beyond a single connection. (this means, if a tracker goes down, your transfers continue at full speed without issue)

Send the e-mail, as this will not happen until enough pressure is placed on the authors of BT clients. Force bittorrent to evolve!

XBT Client + BitComet are the only clients that support this so far.

It's called patience. It's a lot like hacking off one of the Hydra's heads...

It might look like it's gone forever, but with a bit of time it will soon change :)

My friends download all the new movies from Verzion online for free...Its same like suprnova.org..But only thing different is their download speed is 40 kbps but suprnova speed is more than that...They did this because so that they can keep up with their bandwidth thing...

They passed the law in suprme court last year and now its legal for the verzion online to share new movies with their customers...Man they also share 100+ XXX movies for freeee w00t.gif

"The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers." Haven't you guys learned from Star Wars? Public file sharing has been taking a few to the chin. Regardless of future RIAA/MPAA efforts, filesharing will never, ever, end. Where's the next pointless strike going to be?

So the RIAA and MPAA are celebrating what must seem like a number of glorious victories in their longstanding crusade against public file sharing. Due to a number of raids and repeated threats of severe legal action, many of the most popular file sharing sites decided to shut up shop last week. The most notable of which was the legendary BitTorrent Mecca, Suprnova.org. Sloncek, the owner and creator of suprnova, after seeing what was happening in the community made the brave decision to close the site rather than face a possible prison sentence. But how did the authorities manage to wreak such havoc when they've failed many times before? Simple. They went after the site owners.

Most people are aware of the many court cases the RIAA were involved in last year after they decided to prosecute people who shared files. In many cases they stormed up a media frenzy and a lot of people got very upset at how they were handling it. This time out they are going directly for the site owners themselves. It began at the very start of December when Sharman Networks the owners of the notorious Kazaa peer-to-peer network were taken to federal court in Australia on the grounds that Sharman were facilitating copyright piracy, in the meantime making a steady profit from advertising on the site. This started alarm bells ringing within the filesharing community but it was too late for some major sites as raids were conducted in Holland, Finland and France. The result? EDonkey sites Shareconnector, Releases4U, FinReactor, AntiReactor and legendary French based BitTorrent site Youceff Torrents were all gone; but the worst was still to come.

For the last 18 months, the buzz in the file sharing community has all been about BitTorrent's massive media attention, including one report which suggested 30% of internet bandwidth was being sucked up by BitTorrent use. This has cost the mechanism dearly. With all the attention the RIAA has had in the last year, their stance pales in comparison to the furious wrath of the film industries MPAA. This is interesting considering that the Film Industry has yet to suffer the massive financial losses that have decimated the Music Industry. There is little doubt that the current crackdown on file sharing is being pushed by the MPAA. So it was on Sunday that the most popular file sharing site in the world Suprnova.org ceased to be, visitors to the site were greeted with this message:

Greetings everybody,

As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was because it was so hard to keep this site up! But now we are sorry to inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that we all know it. We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links. We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything.

Thank you all that helped us, by donating mirrors or something else, by uploading and seeding files, by helping people out on IRC and on forum, by spreading the word about SuprNova.org. It is a sad day for all of us!

Please visit SuprNova.org every once in a while to get the latest news on what is happening and if there is anything new to report on.

As we wish to maintain the nice community that we created, we are keeping forums and irc servers open.

Thank you all and Goodbye!
sloncek & the rest of the SuprNova Team

There was a sudden outpouring of rage and sorrow amongst the many users of the site, but nothing could be done. By the end of the day, several more sites vanished and the BitTorrent scene had been almost obliterated. FD, moderator of the Suprnova forum, formerly the largest Invision Power Board in existence, removed all content relating to BitTorrent and banned any torrent related discussions. This bold move has spread to many more File Sharing boards preventing them from be taken to court.
