If you are deeply interested you should find a cross-denomination christian site like christianforums.com for more comprehensive information.
Oh before that, catholics are christians, belief in christ is the centre of catholic belief.
I will try to list the major issues that differ catholicism from other christian denominations.
With the basic christ-redemption doctrines, catholics believe in :
- Communion of saints - everyone's a saint in heaven, some are canonized by the catholic church so that christians can follow their examples.
- Purgatory - place that souls of less than perfect state go before going to heaven - various recorded cases if you look for them that are acknoledged by the church. I remember something about a pair of burnt hand marks on a door and an apparition I read about.
- 7 Holy Sacraments blessed by christ/early church including matrimony, holy communion (body and blood of christ - not icon but for real) , holy order (priesthood), anointment(blessing for sicked/near dead), confession, baptism and confirmation (receiving holy spirit).
- Resurrection of body -human in heaven has a corporeal body -that the human entity and experience on earth is shared with the bodily part and the saved soul inheaven will also have a bodily counterpart.
- Role of Mary - queen of apostle, immaculate conception, etc. A role model in following and loving Jesus Christ
- Leadership appointed directly by Jesus Christ - as Jesus renamed Simon> Peter, the rock on which the church is built.
Guess these are the major issues that marks a church catholic.

Hehehe... As a Jew, I find the conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism to be endlessly amusing...
...But really it just boils down to politics--- Either you are loyal to the Pope or not.

My family is Catholic, but I am not. No offence anybody but they are
(EDITED) Christans are simply people who believe in Jesus and worship him.
EDIT: Queenofthenight - you cannot make statements like you did and simply expect people to overlook them just because you said "no offense anyone"......an offensive statement is offensive, end of story.

I personally believe Catholics are idoloters. I've had catholic friends and they talk about praying to the virgin Mary, saints, angels and such. Mary herself told people not to worship her because she was like them. Angels and saints are not to be worshipped and the bible specifically says that, but the catholics miss that.

May be Saucy you can ask your friends what exactly they are doing to Mary, saints, angels, etc. and are they worshipping the said? I merely hope that you will know what they actually are doing.

They're bowing to them, praying TO THEM, talking to them, asking them for guidence and wisdom. All that is WRONG and is actually spoken against in the bible.

When we bow to the statue or picture of a Saint or of Jesus's Mother, we are honoring her or giving her respect just like some people interact with military personal. I guess I am offensed by your uneducated remarks. I was a Catholic education teacher for 10 years and you have no idea what your speaking about. Everyone besides The Trinity are basically friends of The Almighty. And his Mother is afterall, his loving mother who stood besides him when most people fled. As a woman, I look to her for comfort because to me, she is the most loving besides Our Creator.
Catholics and other Church's who broke off from the rule of the Pope are all CHRISTIANS. I find it very offensive when people think we are different because the BASIC RULE IS TO HONOR OUR LORD AND CREATOR. We "who choose to believe in Christ" are all link together as a Family. And as for the other Believers, I love them as I love my own Daughter, regardless of who they are and what they believe and what they have done. We are all human beings and we should try to live peacefully as hard as we can and stop bickering over trivial matters. Sometimes you have to look at the big big picture and ask yourself if dissing this person and that person is really worth it.
Ching.... peace to you all

Both Catholics and the Protostants are Christians. They both hold that faith in Jesus Christ is central to salvation. The rest is merely interpretations of worship and doctrine.

catholics believe that sins, or the lack there of, dictate your entrance to heaven or not, crosswarrior.

IIRC that was the church position before John Paul II, kind of. JP2 changed the official church position to salvation by faith sometime when he was pope.

One generalization is that Christians are Christians and worship Christ while Catholics are Marianist and venerate Mary.
Christianity in the strictest sense though follows the bible to the letter of interpretation. Catholicism on the other hand does uses both their traditions and the bible. Many things within scripture are simply ignored by many Catholics because it does not conform with their dogmas. Then again many groups claim Christianity yet simply overlook certain scriptures that do not fit in with their teachings.
One of the basic tenets of evangelical Christianity is that the bible is one of the manifestations of God, others being Christ and the Holy Spirit, which the bible is an extension of the HS. If anyone is interested the concept is titled 'Logos'.

There's more than what I mentioned. Catholics believe the priests have the right to forgive people of their sins and that men have to confess to them. That's not biblical. What about all the saints and religious artifacts including the shroud of turin that are kept and displayed for worship? They have the dead bodies on display in their churches for worship! The vatican believes it's the final authority over anything biblical. They don't believe in getting saved the way Christians do nor do they baptize the correct way. Catholics are baptized as babies! That's not right. Asking Jesus to become Lord and Savior in your life is getting saved and to get baptized requires full submission underwater (no sprinkling of water on the forehead) in the likeness of His death and ressurrection. Also, when getting baptized, you have to be of a certain age to be able to accept Jesus, which you can't do when you're a baby.
Not only that, but there's a prophecy in the bible concerning the false prophet and the catholic church. The false prophet's church is the church located on seven hills, which is the vatican. The catholics are all into idolotry and things which aren't biblical.

every Sunday and donate some money to the "poor" so your priest can drive a cadillac...

Repent and ask for Jesus to come into your being. Believe it, and really mean it. Basically that's pretty much it.

yeah, what celumnaz said, that qualifies you as being a christian, but living like a christian entails much much more.

to be become a christian you must repent of your sins and follow jesus words, also for baptism, that whole sprinkling of water stuff is nonsense, your whole body must be submerged to symbolize your new birth.

There is a huge difference in being a Christian and trying to be like and following the teachings of Jesus Christ.

So the Catholic doctrine may be radically different from some other Christian beliefs. I don't think that means we should "hate" them anymore than any other religious sect. The whole veneration of Mary and Saints deal is largely misrepresented...technically, they're supposed to ask the Saints for the intercession of God, kinda like..."talk to God for me, please." They're not supposed to ask them favors or pray to them as deities. Unfortunately, a large percentage of the Catholic population misinterprets this part of the doctrine.
Anyway, it is my belief that the Catholics are Christian because they sincerely belief they are Christian and that Jesus died for their sins. All other doctrine differences can be debated until one's blue in the face, but it won't make a difference.
And besides - who are you, you Christians who are saying they aren't really Christian, to judge? I'm sure you eat pork. That's forbidden in the Bible as well. There are many, many things in the text that you don't follow anymore. It's not up to you to decide who's "really" Christian and who isn't. According to your beliefs, that's supposed to be your Deity's job.

You know, maybe the protestants would do more good looking for their own faults, then spending all their time searching for the faults of others. Protestants have just as many unscriptural believes and traditions as the Catholics. And in case anyone was wondering; I was raised in the Catholic Church, I have for the last 8 years been a member of various Protestant churches. So I am in no way just looking on one side of the issue.

that whole pork thing is from the old testiment... old testiment rules aren't followed anymore. That's why jews don't eat pork, since they don't believe the new testiment. Jews follow the old testiment rules

It's still Christianity, just a different form of it. It's in a matter of government, interpretation, and the way one worships and attains forgiveness from the Lord.

I agree with everything Wings of Selkhet said. Why the whining? Why not let everyone believe in what they chose to believe in, and interpret holy texts as they chose to? Does that hurt you? No.
Also, this thread was originally about the differences between catholics and other christian "forms", not to prove who is right and who is wrong.
