GameSpy.com has released their GOTY list, and the number one was taken by, yes, we all saw it coming, Halo 2!! GTA SA took fourth place, bumped down by Half-Life 2 on the PC and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater also on the PS2.

In the Gamers' Choice section, GTA SA took a commanding 40% of 15,719 votes on the PS2 section! Metroid Prime 2 took the Gamecube catagory with 34% of 13,556 votes, and Halo 2 took a SPECTACULAR 59% out of 18,553 votes!!

Congratulations to the games that won, and I'm looking forward to the offical GOTY to be stamped on boxes.

Oh yes, it was indeed hyped. Billboards in time square? Plasma displays running over streets showing the TV ad on repeat for hours until the midnight countdown was judged as nearly a national statement? Awesome stuff.

Although you may believe it was underdeveloped, it still set records that smashed major movie events. Even with the hype it deserves the awards.

dont get me wrong, Halo 2 is a great game, it just doesnt really deserve to win GOTY for anything. i agree with Chris, it was very overhyped and didnt really live up to my expectations, although it still was better than the first.

Halo 2 was awesome, me and Hawk have spent hours blowing each other to bits. Multi-Player is very entertaining, I could easily spend countless days playing it. But, in my eyes, SA is still better

One thing I'm looking forward to is the launch of SA to the Xbox. Since I personally don't have a PS2, I'm limited to the time I can spend at Janiel's house, and the few hours I had on my brother's borrowed copy.

And hereticdude, it didn't live up to anyone's expectations. People ran with the idea of a game that could top Halo, and suddenly these impossible expectations were built. There are a lot of holes that could be poked at, just as with any game, but the time and energy that the development team put into their game is monumental. It truly does deserve the awards.

yes i do realize the time and money spent into making this game and that is what makes it a good game. multiplayer is ok. more fun with 4 people rather than 2. if it had bots in it, then it would be even better. but imo, i feel that there are a lot better games that deserve the title more than Halo 2, like SA (which already has gotten a few) , Ratchet and Clank 3, or MGS 3 (which has also won goty once). lets just hope that with Halo 3, they dont overlook things that could have been easily fixed. but of course, Halo 2 does deserve to win at least 1 goty title. it still is fun, especially on co-op mode.

Oh, they tried to do bots. It basically came out to the same point that EVERY game with bots has: They were either as stupid as rocks or they would cheat like it was no big deal. Think Jackal Snipers on Legendary.

No chance you could get online then, huh? When you can have your own screen, with fifteen other players all fighting to hold onto a skull for the most amount of time while the air is filled with the sound and exhaust of rockets, the taste for victory gets pretty high. It can go from a rocket-filled game of Oddball to a stealthy Sniper game, where if you don't look in every corner before stepping outside you're likely to get your helmet ventilated before you can so much as sneeze.

Then you have your Banshe fliers, Wraith Tank operators, Warthog Drivers, Warthog Gunners, Rocket Jocks in the passenger seats, Ghost pilots, Snipers, Defenders waiting in dark corners with a shotgun...

Bungie's use of XBL in Halo 2 is the most creative use to date. Just the online stat-tracking makes my head hurt...

Yes, whenever I am bored I ask company around to play Halo 2, it is an excellent game in most aspects. I hae played and owned all the games in the top 4, and out of those Halo 2 is the one I enjoy playing the most, so In my eyes I agree with it being number one.

Game shouldnt be rated by their multi player.

Games should be rated "overall".... and since that a big part of that game is the multiplayer aspect, it needs to be taken into account. Because wouldn't that mean games that are basically just multiplayer games, without any single player aspect, could never win an award?

I never said the Halo2 single player wasnt good to play..... I just said why I like that game more.

Oh yes, let's take into account a game that has both a single player game, AND a multiplayer mode, but skip the multiplayer! There goes half the game right there! It's BRILLIANT!

Like Subby said, games should be rated overall, not just by a few single select parts. For instance, I hate SA's soundtrack. It just blows. If I were to review it I wouldn't give it a 0/10 just because of that one part. I would rate it overall. Same thing for EVERY game on the market.

If you can't get on XBL, I do feel sorry for you. Although you can use tunneling software like xbconnect if you have a few spare cables and a router. Halo 2's multiplayer is indeed half the game, if not more. Depending on what you want.

but seriously, even though RE4 isnt nearly as hyped as Halo 2 was, it still is close. Nintendo could do a little better marketing like show TV commercials, but the game has been so under wraps that they refuse to do it, so they released several short trailers on the internet and a crap-load of screen shots so they wouldnt ruin too much of the game for fans. one of the main reasons RE4 is as hyped as it is is because people are curious as to how the game is gonna be. not like Halo 2, just another first-person shooter with no new gameplay elements.

Re4's marketing was actually seriously smegged, and several people lots their jobs over it.

For starters, the overwhelming amount of info on the web including hundreds of thousands of images and videos were never supposed to be released. Only a few videos and screenshots were ever supposed to get out. Makes sense, we pretty much know all of the first half of the game. Ada was never supposed to be leaked, etc etc. As such thousands of images and videos have been pulled off the net.

Secondly, having capcom announce such things like the PS2 release having extra features the GC release wont infact erodes the GC sales. Really stupid on Capcoms part. Now lots of fans will be waiting for the PS2 release and not buy the GC version.

There's thousands of reasons why the RE4 marketing was absoultely terrible. Only the people following the data released even know much about it. No TV spots, barely any magazine spots, etc etc.

Well, the marketing for it started out great at least, or seemed like it would. but all those things that BS mentioned above are pretty bad. i didnt know that that much of the info on the game wasnt supposta be leaked out, but i figured at least some it was. it really pisses me off that the PS2 version is gonna have more special features than the GC version considering how crap the rest of the PS2 game is gonna be. but still, any big RE fan will buy the GC game right away because of how long theyve been waiting to play such an amazing looking game.

It's also known that the PS2 version of RE4 is going to be extremely limited within terms of playability and graphics, which is why capcom needs to put these extra features in, just to make the game worth buying on the PS2. Because, of course, the PS2 is not equipped enough to handle the advanced technology of the GC. Fact.

there is one. its on G4 Tech TV. i dont have the station, but my friend does. i saw part of last years awards there and they seemed pretty official to me. the entire channel is about videogames, so it really kicks ass. damn i wish i had it.

the real problem with halo 2 is that unless you get X-box live , it gets boring after 10 hours . I suspect many of you who think it doesnt deserve goty dont have live , since a lot of halo 2's greatness comes from just that . The ability to make your own gametypes and instantly start killing people online with them along with the clan forums , in game clan system , ranking system , and pretty much the whole online experience is more then half the game . The campaign mode is just practice .


Not to mention the sword/rocket launcher glitch that lets you fly if you have the sword and an empty rocket launcher ---- Weeee !

About XBL... The Limited Edition(and possibly the regular edition also has it. I'm not sure, since I only have copies of the LE) comes with a two-month free trial to XBL. As long as you have access to a credit card and broadband, you can play online. After this, insert more marketing...

In order to speak to other people, be prepared to drop 30-40 bucks on an Xbox Live Communicator. The headset that comes with it is crap(warning -- personal opinion), so unless you have another phone-compatable headset, be prepared to drop MORE cash on another headset.

The two-month free trial will run out. You can't dodge that. So you'll eventually either cancel the subscription(taking full advantage of two months free on a pay service) or go ahead and bite the bullet. Just start paying for it. A year is only 49 bucks; less than a new release game. It's over 10 bucks a month, or 120+ dollars a year. The yearly subscription will save you a ton of money.

You get what you pay for, though.

Spike TV's award show is a joke. It always has been. They try to get good ratings, while beating everyone with a stick. I rarely care about award write-ups until I see the award itself on the game's case. :)

BS, I'm sorry you can't get G4TechTV, but you really aren't missing much. If there's some terribly important show that you just NEED to see, most fansites will have their fans record the show and later make it available for download once the show is off the channel's program. I'm sure you've seen this already, but I've always hated G4, and watching it brutally inhale an awesome station like TechTV and make it bend over... my hatred has just grown.

And Chris, I'm sorry if you believe that Bungie is below you. I have to mimic Janiel when I suggest you go ahead and make a game that will top Halo and Halo 2's fame. Your right Halo is a great game for CONSOLES. It's only because of the X Box's controller that Halo works so well. Mostly because the PS2 and Gamecube controllers cannot do FPS. However when Halo was ported onto the PC what happened? It actually had some compitition and it was finally reavealed to be average. We will see what happens to Halo2 when it goes to the PC.
