I believe that a poltergeist is not actually a spirit, but more of a phenomenon that occurs when there is "emotional stress" in a home. That's why most poltergeist activity happens in the presence of an adolescent girl - all of those pent-up emotions and stress, I guess. Poltergeist activity usually surrounds a specific person, rather than a place, as in a typical "haunting". JMO - hope this helps!

"Poltergeist activity" is just what people call any kind of phenomena where stuff is being moved around by something unseen. It can be a spirit of someone who was once alive (moving stuff is a good way to get attention after all), it could be a spirit of some other kind, natural phenomena, or the aformentioned psychological events that surround one particular person. There isn't really a profile of what a poltergeist is (or was).

i dont consider a poltergeist to attack people....it will be mischievious and such, but the ghosts that leave scratches or bite or hit or strangle poeple, to me, are "inhuman spirits" (spirits that never had a body) or demons, if you will...

I think poltergeist can be both a ghosts and an agent controlling it sucounsously by pk energy then tend to follow people and hauntings usually don't hauntings are not ususually dangerous as in poltergeist they can become very dangerous the way I can tell the difference is that poltergeists tend to have stages where they flair up then die down but hauntings tend to be consistent

in my opinon a poltergist sorry i cannot spell that good anyways is a thing that can't move on, or a demon from hell itself something that causes mischeif and evil stuff to a human for fun they have no feelings at all in my view.
but ghosts are other cases they r people ( souls ) that cannot move on because something is keeping them back i.e. a person, event ...... and that they will not hurt you if they r not threatned but you do hear of people that are attacked by them, but just think that might be the only way a ghost can get your attention and make you notice that they need help .

I once read that an investigator went to a family's house cause they said they had a ghost that was moving things around. When he went to these people's house he made a comment that the ghost have a habit of ripping pictures in half. They reported later that after the man left, their large wedding picture was ripped in half while still in the frame behind glass.
Not to long ago I told a friend about this as he was an investigator. When he went out to this elderly lady's house cause she complained of a ghost was moving things and playing with her.
He thought of what I said to him and he made a comment that these ghost like to wash dirty dishes and they hate dust.
No sooner did he say this then there was a loud bang. When they went into the kitchen all of her dishes had been pulled out of the cabinet, stacked on the counter and they were all wet. Some still had soap suds on them. And then when he checked he couldn't find a dust anywhere in the house. Not even under the couch or the bed.
He didn't tell me if there was anything else, but he was estatic when he told me this.

Macgyver, are you saying that poltergeists listen to people in their environment and "haunt" as is expected of them? That they respond to "ideas"? Or are you saying that these families were trying to mislead the investigators?

It could be either one, but from what my friend told me she was an elderly lady, and he didn't think it was likely that she would spend the time or the effort ( I just called my friend and he said that she was like near 75 years old at the time she has since passed away and the new family in the house he also knows but they say nothing has happened to them so far) She wasn't scared just puzzled. It might have been the spirit of her late husband, or just a friendly ghost. But I have heard of this several times.
