Saw this today and couldn't believe it - an adult version of Rainbow ? blink.gif

QUOTE
Cult kids TV show Rainbow is to make a return to the small screen, according to The Sun today.

Zippy, George and Bungle will apparently star in a sitcom aimed at adults. The show's human star, Geoffrey Hayes, has also been asked to appear.

Hayes told The Sun, "This time they want to aim it at the generations who grew up on Rainbow. The scripts are very funny. It's all about finding out where the characters are now, all these years later. It's all tongue-in-cheek, of course."

The original show was axed in 1992.

never saw that cartoon...and I am pretty old...lol

My god, Rainbow.

How would they pull off an adult version? Zippy saying older-themed jokes? What if kids pick up on this? I dunno...
Saru
It does seem a strange idea, the characters in Rainbow will always be associated with kids TV, I don't think an adult sitcom version will work.

It'll be interesting to see what they do.

I don't doubt i'll be tuning in to see the show once it airs, i just don't know if it'll be such a good idea.
Then again hey, maybe it'll be really funny.
That is, if it gets out of the UK.

Rainbow was one of my fave shows when I was a kid... I have mixed feelings about this come back though...

On one hand to bring back such a cult and such a good show that was a product of the 80's to make it in todays world, I don't think would work very well. The writing might be alright but I think the general feel wouldn't be the same. And you know they'd try to jazz it up by having bands like McFly perform at the end or something crappy like that... Also kids shows today are no-where near as good as they were in the 80's to mid 90's... There's a few like Spongebob but that's cos it has good stories aimed at kids but humour that older kids and adults can get and laugh at.

But bringing it back and aiming it at the generation that grew up with it might work out ok. I think its probably a better idea than to bring it back and aim to todays kids. It might not even be a traditional 'kids' show in the sense it will be on saturday mornings. We may find it comes on in the evening some time... I mean what 20-30 yr old is gonna get up at 8 or 9 in a morning to watch a kids show? We may find it is brought back as a kids show but it just has humour for adults.

The fact that it says

sitcom aimed at adults
makes me beleive it will be on in the evening time and cos it says sitcome, that says to me it will be a story like thing rather than just random kids stuff. It might be something along the lines of Friends, where they are living in an apartment... maybe they get along by making appearances opening up supermarkets and so on and it might be about them trying to get back to the top.

Whatever the case I think the key to having this comeback be a success is to keep the same style and feel of the original show... more so than the writing but good writing will also be a key factor. Don't jazz it up with pop bands. Don't have Zippy, George and Bungle doing stupid song and dance join in routines...

Anyway, of course I'll tune in to check it out... They better not bastardise it though.

Viz ran a couple of takes on it, it had Zippy as the psycho (not too much of a stretch) it could work if its anything like that.

I think you have to take whatever The Sun says with a pinch of salt. grin2.gif I remember enjoying watching rainbow but can't remember why. I don't think there's enough demand from 'our' generation to get it back on the air, but I guess anythings possible!

This show must have never made it to the States. I've never heard of it. It's live action, right, not a cartoon?

Characters from the classic 70s childrens' show Rainbow could be revived as late night chat-show hosts.
Fremantle, the production arm of RTL, is developing a programme aimed at adult audiences, which will feature puppets Zippy, Bungle and George.

The trio, together with Rainbow host Geoffrey Hayes, have a cult following among adults and are especially popular on the college circuit.

The channel on which it would go out has not been confirmed but the show is expected to play upon Rainbow's reputation for innuendo and camp humour.

"Puppets can say things a real person would never dare say," said Alan Boyd, president of worldwide entertainment at Fremantle.

"We would revive Rainbow as a straight kids' programme or we could take the retro element and keep it naughty for a late-night chat show..."

eck maybe they are on the comeback! whistling2.gif
