If you got a new computer for Christmas, Consumer Alert has some advice on what to do with your old one. It could save you money on your taxes.

A number of charities and charity clearinghouses -- like the National Christian Foundation and Gifts In Kind America -- accept used computers.

The clearinghouses match your donation with an organization that can use it and they will, in turn, send you a receipt. The receipt is important for a tax write off.

For tax purposes, you can find out how much your donation is worth by searching eBay or other auction sites for similar computers.

There is also a computer blue book that you can buy for under $5 so you can look up the value of your donation.

Usually you have to pay to ship your computer.

Remember, however, whether you donate or recycle your old computer make sure you have erased your hard drive or all of your personal information could be stolen.
