I forgot about this a while ago...
Two years ago, during one late summer night, there was this white light on a part of the horizon. It looked as if the moon was shining there only much brighter, but it was in a completely different part of the sky. My dad went in his car to see where it source was, and a couple hours later he came back saying he couldn't find its source, it just stayed on the horizon. We looked out the window at it for about fifteen minutes, and it stayed there. Only after we woke up the next day it never appeared again.
Any idea as to what this could have been?
NOTE: The land around the area was also luminous.

reflection from a body of water, light bending in our atmosphear, it could have been a spot light your father did not find, theres a bunch of explanations

There were no bodies of water around. I don't think it was a spotlight, either. I live waaay out there. As for light bending in the atmosphere, I think it's incredibly unlikely that it could be concentrated on one spot like that.

I failed to mention that there was a hill, so the horizon was actually pretty close. The light seemed as if the it was coming from behind the hill, but the trees on it were illuminated also. The brightness was about twice as bright as moonlight.
I tried to post a bitmap image here to provide a visual but the filesize was too big. Anyone know how to reduce it?
