user posted image rAuthorities are investigating a mysterious laser beam that was directed into the cockpit of a commercial jet traveling at more than 8,500 feet. The beam appeared Monday when the plane was about 15 miles from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the FBI said. "It was in there for several seconds like (the plane) was being tracked," FBI agent Robert Hawk said. The pilot was able to land the plane, and air traffic controllers used radar to determine the laser came from a residential area in suburban Warrensville Heights. Hawk said the laser had to have been fairly sophisticated to track a plane traveling at that altitude. Authorities had no other leads, and are investigating whether the incident was a prank or if there was a more sinister motive. In Colorado Springs, Colo., Monday night, two pilots reported green pulsating laser lights shined into their cockpits. Both the passenger plane and a cargo plane landed without problems. Police dispatched patrol cars and a helicopter to a neighborhood to investigate but found nothing. FBI agents were continuing to conduct interviews, agency spokeswoman Monique Kelso said.

Federal officials have expressed concern about terrorists using laser beams, which can distract or temporarily blind a pilot. A memo sent to law enforcement agencies recently by the FBI and the Homeland Security Department says there is evidence that terrorists have explored using lasers as weapons. Authorities said there is no specific intelligence indicating al-Qaida or other groups might use lasers in the United States.

Very strange. I hope this isn't terrorists. I can see terrorists laying low in the mid-west to do their dirty deeds. Scary.

Lets just hope its some kids with their little gadgets having some fun, becuase the alternative is something that no ones wants to think about!

A string of incidents around the country involving laser beams aimed at aircraft aren't linked to terrorism and are more likely the work of mischief makers, the FBI (news - web sites) said Sunday.

Whew! That was close. Mishief makers? I hope the terrorists don't get into the act, but I think it is inevitable when they see a foothold.

It don't take a very strong laser to do harm to your eyes, buy to hit a moving target, from a distance, with the angle of the wind shield at an angle would require more than a Radio Shack Pointer laser. I think the Feds are trying to make us feel safe.

You might be right there.

Coincidentally, the History Channel,on Sunday, had a program on how the F-16 uses laser to track and lock on to targets. Such a device attached to surface to air missiles is also available. Maybe someone is just practising for use on Air Force One?!?!?! w00t.gif w00t.gif

NEWARK, New Jersey -- Federal authorities Tuesday used the Patriot Act to charge a man with pointing a laser beam at an airplane overhead and temporarily blinding the pilot and co-pilot.

The FBI acknowledged the incident had no connection to terrorism but called David Banach's actions "foolhardy and negligent."

Ok ,I read that as well. but what was he using to ( point at the stars ). Had to be more than a pointer, the air will block and disperse a low power beam! The air craft effected was at 300,000 feet or more.
Thats why they were never till recently used as weapons. required to much power to punch though the air. no.gif

Or maybe its the aliens that are finally coming (j/k) w00t.gif

Yeah, but that is pretty creepy

With the co-ordinates that the pilot gave in a previous incident, they arrested a man that confessed to using a laser pointer.

This is probably the same issue. I think the pilot just got startled and then got angry. No big deal. Everyone was over reacting and paranoid.

If you don't want to get caught in a terrorist attack, don't go where you know thousands of people will be.
