So here's the Official Rock Music thread!!!!
The first topic of conversation: Good cover songs vs. Bad cover songs.
Discuss!

I think there will be a lot more bad covers than good covers

Some that I like:
"My my, hey hey" by Nirvana (Neil Young)
"The Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana (David Bowie)
"Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam (not sure of the original artist's name).
Some terrible ones include Avril covering a Guns n' Roses song (Knockin' on Heaven's Door), and Will Shatner covering Pulp (Common People). *shudder*

Band that does generally all-around good cover songs, Nirvana.
Girty mentioned one of the all-time worst cover songs: Madonna's horrific version of Don McLean's American Pie. I'm still cryingo n the inside.

Yeah, Madonna's "American Pie" was really bad.
Do the original artists actually agree to these covers, or is it their record label?

One of the BEST cover songs I've heard is Johnny Cash's version of the Beatles' song 'In my Life'. (ok, that may not be the title of the song...I need to look it up...but that's the refrain)

I haven't heard it. But I did hear Cash's version of "Hurt" by NIN.

Some I like:
Rodney Carrington's redition of"Gin 'n Juice" originally by Snoop Dogg
Dynamite Hack does "Boyz in the Hood" by NWA (I think)
Phish on barbershop songs, those are always good!
Some I don't:
Anything Uncle Kracker remakes
The "Imagine" remake, I am not sure who does it

It depends on the song rights and who owns them. For example, Michael Jackson owns all of the Beatles songs, so he can sell them to whomever he likes. After a certain amount of time, the songs are given up to public domain, or remain the property of the artists estate.
One annoying side note: In their CD's credits, Limp Bizcuit misspelled Pete's Townshend's name regarding the Who's 'Behind Blue Eyes'. Ingrates.

That is insanely scary. I wouldn't trust Michael Jackson with my classic songs if I was them. Why doesn't someone like McCartney have the right to them?

Ha ha...he tried! Michael and Paul were in a bidding war, but Jackson could put up more money and won. They had been friends previously, but haven't since.
Most depressing remake: Rod Stewart's version of Jimi Hendrix's 'Angel'. Why, God, why??!!

Jan 6 2005, 04:23 PM
Yeah, I think after 50 years the rights go public, I am not sure though.
While we are talking about music rights, I'll go off on a little tangent.
The Simpson's creator, Matt Groening attemted to use the song "Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Light foot for one of the episodes. The problem lied with the fact that ol' Gordie left the rights to the song to all the surviving family members of those that perished on the Edmund Fitzgerald. So Matt needed the permission from 134 people to use the song!

What is it with these artists? What makes them think it's acceptable to remake classic songs and then butcher them?
There's actually one bad that does nothing but covers. They're called Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and every song they cover is done so that it's pop punk-y. But it's actually done surprisingly well. They've done "Mandy", "Over the Rainbow", and "Yesterday" just to name a couple. Oh, and "Uptown Girl", which I (personally) find their version better!

This one is kind of silly, I guess:
You guys know the "Love Theme" from Top Gun, 'Take My Breath Away' (no clue on the original artist)? Our pal Jessica Simpson has re-made it. Dang it, that was the first sex scene I ever saw in a movie, how dare she tarnish my 9 year old memories??

Ok, some more good one's:
16 Horsepower covering CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising”. Very Creepy
Giant Sand does an awesome medley of Marty Robbins’ “El Paso” and Neil Young’s “Out on the Weekend”
Friends of Dean Martinez do a fierce instrumental version of “Summertime (and the Living is Easy)”
Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt) and Kelly Willis do a really lovely duet of Townes Van Zandt’s “Rex’s Blues”
Blue Mountain do a smoking version of Robert Johnson’s “If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day”
And I’ve heard plenty of great covers performed live but never recorded officially: Grant Lee Buffalo doing Neil Young’s “For the Turnstiles”, Tom Petty doing JJ Cale’s “13 Days”, and Califone did an entire live show of Rolling Stones covers, circa 68-74, and released it low-budget as “Knub U Knive”. Phenomenal.

There is one song that, more than any other song, should not ever be covered. Thank God it hasn't been attempted as of yet, that is Elvis Presley's "Trilogy" it is a medley of three songs. Dixie, Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Hallelujah. I can't even listen to it without getting misty eyed. I find it to be one of the most powerful songs I have ever listened to.

The name of it is Badlands and it came out in 2000. Here, I looked up a little mini-review on it:
QUOTE
Badlands—A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska — Various Artists
* Sub Pop
Like Bob Dylan and The Band's Basement Tapes, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska was never even intended to be an album.
The songs, recorded on a portable 4-track cassette deck in the bedroom of Springsteen's New Jersey home in 1981, were initially envisioned as nothing other than demos. But those demos were released in their raw form, and Nebraska—with its dark, harrowing tales of murderers, convicts, poverty and disillusionment—painted an American portrait that was as revelatory as it was cinematic. It became one of the most influential albums of Springsteen's career.
Badlands offers a song-by-song return to the desolate terrain of Nebraska as interpreted by a cross-section of contemporary players. And while the varied interpretations are enlightening, there is a definite inconsistency to the set.
The wondrous voice of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, teamed with her band's guitarist Adam Seymour, gets the disc off to a strong start on the song “Nebraska.” But the momentum shifts abruptly with a truly awful, in fact repulsive rendition of Springsteen's masterful “Atlantic City,” as decimated by none other than Hank III, the grandson of Hank Williams. That's definitely the disc's low-light, but more intriguing offerings, like Los Lobos' baritone-sax driven rendition of “Johnny 99” and a keyboard-swirling spin through “Mansion on the Hill” by the obscure Crooked Fingers, are far more appealing. And one of the album's most captivating contributions comes from rising folk star Dar Williams, whose breathy, harmony-tinged re-working of “Highway Patrolman” brings life to this poignant saga about two brothers whose lives take dramatically different turns.

There are a lot of crappy covers and I really didn't like it when 311 covered The Cure's "Love Song." It sounded exactly the same and so why even bother doing it again! Korn's cover of "Word up" by i forgot who, is also crap.

Theres loads of bad covers out there, but Im just going to focus on the ones I liked....
For me, I personally like the cover song where the cover song sounds nothing like the original... It shows that the band doesnt have to stick close to the original to make a cover song good. That is why, despite what a lot of people have said, A Perfect Circle's version of Imagine is actually enjoyable (to me). Many hardcore Lennon fans and even people who just like the original song may not agree at all
I also like Korn's version of Another Brick In The Wall... its original... and for those who think that the original will be forgotten, I dont think a band like Korn could EVER take the shine out of Pink Floyd's songs... they are classics and will be remembered for years to come
