I have found that slapping the ipod repeatedly and cursing loudly generally fixes these types of problems.

Well...uh... I'm not sure if this will work, but try going to iPod options and unchecking "Automatically update songs." The option's only there just in case you've changed some details for a song, and you want those details to appear on the iPod. It gets pretty annoying having to wait for it to update every single time you connect your iPod to the computer. You could live without it, especially if it means more songs on your little buddy.

I turned that off cos I would lose my songs cos I don't store them on my comp!

Well, I use an iPod with Mac OS X and it is really good. Never had that issue.

Now: have you ever disconnected the iPod before ejecting it? Check cables, try to unplug everything before plugging the iPod. Sometimes peripherals create conflicts. If you have a solid backup, try resetting the iPod.

You might want to check out http://www.ipodlounge.com. It's considered the number one website for iPod information. They also have a discussion forum so you can talk about iPods all day long, or if you have another dilemma, you could always ask your fellow iPoders who would be happy to fix solve your problem.
