Is anyone here familiar with dreamweaver? What I'm trying to do is get my site published on a server [specifically bravenet]. I'm new with the program, so I don't know what all things are that I have to do. I know it has something to do with all the files getting transfered or something to the server you're going to use, but... it's all so confusing. Can someone tell me how to do it without all the fancy computer talk?

First you need to purchase/get yourself some webspace. It will give you a website address, and password to use that site. Then it really depends on what your doping with it, but Dreamweaver is a reasonably easy program to use.

I already have a site to put it onto. I have earthlink, it gives me a free domain... but what I want to know is how to get the site I made on dreamweaver to appear in that domain... cause the domain earthlink gives me already has its own website builder [trellix] so I was trying to figure out how to get it to use my dreamweaver instead of using the trellix.

Do you already know the FTP address, login and password?
That is the first thing you will need...
Have you gotten as far as publishing the site from dreamweaver?

That's the thing: I don't know how. I don't even know what the FTP address is.
I have a login and password for trellix, of course. It's just my email and and my email login. I have a site already made with the trellix:
http://embark.to/cshrineBut I want to replace it with a site I make on dreamweaver. I also have a bravenet account that supports websites.

Ok I can help with that.
So are you preferring to go with bravenet or with earthlink?
Have you already put the site together in Dreamweaver?
Is it the same site as in your signature link?

I'm going to go with earthlink.
I haven't made the whole site, I just wanted to test this whole thing with the home page I've made.
I read somehwere that you can either edit it straight into the internet while you're building it, and also edit it all on your own files and THEN uploud it. How do I choose to edit it straight into the internet?

By the way, what exactly is FTP? I mean, what does it stand for? Is it something I can find in the host server?

The way that Dreamweaver works with Earthlink you edit all of the files on your computer, and then when you are done you upload those files to your address.
The first think that you will have to do is to figure out what your earthlink web address and uploading information is. It is usually your initial username; but not always.(i.e.: www.earthlink.net/katkloud.com)
When you first signed up with Earthlink.net they would have sent you an email with the information; or you can go to earthlink.net member center and login in order to get that information.
Try this address to get your information:
linkyLet me know if you can get the information from there...
edit: and don't post that info here

Wow! That helps. A lot. Thank you so much!
So when I'm done I go to the place where my files are stored, and it'll give me further instructions or what?

I have not seen the latest version of the personal webspace for earthlink in a while as I no longer host with them anymore.
There used to be an option when you logged into your Personal Webspace that was something along the lines of "File Manager" where you could use your browser to upload files to your webspace. Do you see that option?
If you are just trying to upload the home page and associated graphics files, it might work for you to get a quick look at how the files would appear.
Once your site is complete it might be easier to publish it using an FTP program(File Transfer Protocol), but it just depends on how large and complicated the site is.
For the time being, see if the Personal Webspace has a web based uploading option, if not let me know.

If direct FTP is available with your web space then Dreamweaver has its own personal FTP manager, one of the reasons it is probably the best programs you'll ever use.
When in Dreamweaver you will see tabs to the right of your screen. Select the
Site Tab and then select
New Site from the list. From the box that opens give your site a name, this can be anything to recognize it on your local and via dreamweaver, it has no direct effect on your hosted site.
From there simply answer the questions regarding your site, ftp login details etc. Once done the site will then become active on your local as well as your ftp. With this feature you have the ability to synchronize the entire site locally and remotely. This way all files are a replica of the remote files on your ftp.
Should you get stuck drop me an email and I would be happy to send you a walkthrough for setting it up.
P.S. Avoid Frontpage.

Alright I know how to publish it, I tried it out and it works. It's so easy it's hard, heh. What I'm still haveing trouble with, is on the forms in dreamweaver you can set a textbox as a password, but it doesn't make any sense. It doesn't give you any options on what the password IS, or what you have to type in. I mean it doesn't even give you an option on where you're supposed to be linked if you type in the password right. I even asked my teacher and even he doesn't know. Can anyone help me with that?
