Today, while I was in school, I heard one of the strangest things... there was four differant people in my class that had scratches on their arms and legs that they cant account for...
And every single one of them said they probably got it while sleeping... I just thought that it was very odd for four people in the same class to have similiar scratches.

I've never actually awoken with scartches, but sometimes in the morning I wake up, and then I suddenly feel a rush of pain like something had just scratched me. No cut, or bruise or scab. Clean skin. Maybe I just need to get a bit more sleep.

For the past few months, I too, have been waking up with scratches on my fore arms, at least once a week, if not more often. They always look like they've been made with a needle or a pin, very fine lines, and always lightly scabbed over. Sometimes, there's only a couple of lines, but once, there were about ten, the scratches range in length from a quarter inch or so to about an inch and a half long, and they don't hurt. Nothing in, on or around my bed that could be doing it, no pets, my nails are too short ... have tried scratching myself and have left no marks that way ... I don't sleep walk that I am aware of.
I DID go to my doctor about a month ago. Although admitting it was strange, for lack of a better explanation, he told me he thought I was scratching myself due to dry itchy skin. I don't buy that explanation, as my skin is NOT that dry, nor is it itchy during my waking hours.
I'm not scared or worried about these scratches, but would like to know who or what is causing them, and if it's a 'who', what he or she wants from me.

Last yr I woke up with bright red marks on my left arm. They looked like they should've hurt, but, they didn't. One mark started at the knuckle of my little finger about half an inch wide. As it progressed up my arm to my elbow, it got wider, about 2 1/2 - 3 inches. Where my finger and thumb come together, there were 3 red connected rings that formed a triangle. Above the rings was a red shape that looked like an exaggerated letter H. I've had many other marks on my body, but, this was the most elaborate. (I know where they come from...)

Hi--thanks for your reply. No, no itching or burning; not eczema. Dermatologist ruled out anything of this sort. Just thin, slightly scabbed scratches of varying length found on different areas some mornings when I wake up. Been happening all my life, not bothersome at all. No pain, no signs of infection of any kind. Just strange that they are always new but always seem to be older by the look of them. Not every day, not even every week. Just wierd. No cats in the house until I was an adult; this has been occurring since i was very little. No fingernail scratches.
I can't believe this conversation is still going on--I mentioned this the very first time I found this website, months ago. Had no idea there were so many people this has happened to!! Seemed like a small concern, just something I wondered about since it has been a continuing thing for me. Has turned into quite a topic.

Not ringworm; ruled out way long ago. If it were that, I'd be just one big huge mess by now wouldn't I?! haha

Your description is the most like my experience of any I've seen I think. Nothing spectacular, just strange that they occur and no explanation. It really makes ya wonder what causes it doesn't it? No physical explanation has been satisfactory to me. And I am not one to jump to conclusions of supernatural causes; you don't seem to be either. So, I'll just keep watching and see if any reasonable cause comes in, that is, any reasonable cause that rings true not counting the hateful things people say or the obvious that are NOT the cause.(i.e., cats, rashes, me scratching myself, sticks or pins in the linen, etc--although these are all good suggestions, they are not the cause). Thanks for your reply!

I grew up on a farm, have actually had a case of ringworm before, and have seen ringworm on other people ... these scratches do NOT resemble ringworm whatsoever, and no burning or itching by the way.

I had started a thread on another web site, but stopped participating for the same reasons you said ... got frustrated with people telling me they were positive I had to be making these scratches myself, pins in my bed, etc. When I came across what you said in this forum, I had to reply, as mine was so similar to yours. I should mention, I am in my 40's, educated, and have three teenagers, two of which have also had experiences with waking up with scratches a few times (my 14 year old daughter and one of my 16 year old twin boys). I've never had any scratches appear on any other part of my body except my arms, got a new one yesterday near my left elbow, about an inch long. Hang in there Scarlettpony ... I for one believe what you say!

Yes, I did look into Stigmata ... don't think that's what's causing these scratches though. Thanks for the suggestion, T-Nemesis. Five more short ones, half an inch or so long, on my left arm yesterday morning, by the way. My "pet theory" is that someone or someTHING is doing this to me, trying to leave me some kind of a message. Have actually spoken out loud to this 'entity', have asked for a sign I can recognize ... a letter, number or symbol, but still, just these scratches, sometimes only once a week or less, three times this past week

Like many others this is my first posts on this thread and i found it by chance (the forum while doing research on the shark the megladon).
I also have these scratches, they dont occur that often and are normally on my back or my shoulder. To be fair i havent thought much of them and believed like most i did them in my sleep. I think they have been happening for years and im 19 now and cant really remember when they didnt happen.
The best way to describe them is that they at long cat like scratchesn and like overs have said i they seem to be scabbed and heeled over and no sign if bleeding. Sometimes they are loads of them on my back (even where i cant reach) and its my flatmate or whoever who points them out and i assumed as i sleep in the nod that i rubbed it against something.
Most Odd and i thought i was a freak

I'm amazed. I saw a special on probably the Discovery channel years ago about Megladon sharks and I've been using that as my username ever since.
Anyways, that's not what amazes me. Like many others I too get these scratches. I used to get them going up & down my back. The scratches would reach places that I could not reach. I used to joke around with my wife about the scratches and tell her it was one of her friends that I was having an affair with. We used to laugh & joke about it together. I wasn't very concerned and just thought maybe it was a spring from the matress or something. I really didn't put any effort into trying to figure out how they got there. The scratches were just as everyone here has described. They were not deep enough to cause any pain. They were always scabbed over, and they appear in the same place over & over....but that changed. I no longer get scratches on my back. I now get them starting from the base of my neck and they stretch 3 - 4 inches almost to my shoulders. Basically it on the skin covering my collar bone. They scratches appear on the left & right sides. I get them 2 - 3 times per month. I have no pets and my nails are extremely short. I've had a problem with biting my nails ever since I can remember. I am 100% sure that I did not create these scratches. The scratches are not the only thing that happens to me in my sleep. My wife tells me that I breathe rapidly & heavily at times. Kind of like a guy in the gym pumping himself up, getting ready to light quiet a bit of weight. She says I also growl. She describes it as no ordinary growling. (I have 4 young children and play with them & growl at them during play often) But this is different. She says it's a very, very deep & loud growl. She says I grab her shoulder and shake her sometimes too. Just recently she woke me up my screaming "Please don't hurt me. I'm scared!!!" I heard her voice say those words and I woke up & went right back to sleep within seconds. Later when she described it she said I was tossing & turning and breathing heavy so she tried to wake me up. (That's a rule of ours - I will explain in a bit) She said at that point a sat up in bed leaned over very close to her face, looked her right in the eyes and growled very loudly & violently. Then I went back to sleep. The only part I remember is the words she spoke & the look on her face at that moment. The only way I can described it is she look absolutely terrified.
Ok - now for the rule I mentioned above. My wife & I have a rule that if it looks like I'm having a bad dream she is to wake me up immediately. She said sometimes she's afraid I'll get mad at her for awaking me. I told her to do whatever it takes to wake me up. I told her that I fear that things may get to a point where I may unwillingly & unknowingly hurt her in my sleep. I told her to please do not let me do that.
Another thing that happened to me once a few years about is I was sleeping like normal. (This was before any scratches) All of a sudden I felt a very, very heavy weight on top of me. The first though (this is while I'm sleeping) is that something evil is trying to get inside of me. I felt that if I could use my arms I have a better chance of getting this weight off of me but I could not move my arms or legs no matter how hard I tried. I realized that I was sleep and something told me that if I wake up everything would be ok. I then tried to move around as much as possible to wake myself up. It wasn't working. I then thought that I could get my wife to wake me up so I tried to yell her name, but I couldn't talk. All I could do was moan. I tried and tried and tried to yell her name so what she'd wake me up but the words would not come out. Eventually I was able to wake up and my wife was right there looking at me. She said that the look on my face was as if I'd seen a ghost. Then I explained to her what had happened. She said she was there the whole time watching me and she thought I was having some kind of sex dream and she wanted to see if I would say another woman's name. So she sat & watched me. Ever since then we agreed that she will wake me up at the first sign of any trouble while I'm sleeping. My wife says that every time we watch a scary movie that it happens. She also admits that sometime it happens for no reason at all. One night she said she woke me about about 10 times within about 30 minutes. That night I felt that something was just waiting for me to go to sleep. Another weird thing is that I do not seem to dream. I've heard the saying that everyone dreams, but some people don't remember theirs. If that's true then Id be one that doesn't remember the dreams. I may remember 2 or 3 dreams per year if I'm lucky. I am a very deep sleeper too. I don't know if that matters or not. I've never told anyone about this other than my wife until now. I'm in my early 30's, I have a college education, work as a System Administrator, and I'm not crazy. I know that people will either think I'm crazy or try to explain what I'm going through by using methods mentioned before, like a cat or allergies. I will admit I do have allergies.

I'm open to thought, questions, suggestions, and comments.

Hi Shark--This is Scarlett. Wow. And, like you, I am college educated (4 years--I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, I work in a hospital and am respected by my peers, etc.) I don't think I have lost touch with reality quite yet; so, what the heck is it? I don't really care that much, it hasn't changed since I was a little girl and has never hurt me.
I am much more concerned about this violent growling thing and potential danger to your wife. I think it would be so easy (if I were you) to tend to let this go and just hope that your wife is awake HERSELF when you decide in your sleep to hurt her. What I am concerned about is that there may be a time when she can't, for some reason, wake you up. Also, I think it is a huge responsibility you have placed on her to "not let this happen". Almost like if it does, it will somehow be of her choice or fault or negligence. I don't think this is a malicious tack you are taking with this; you seem to be a really sweet person and I feel sure that you love your wife. I know you don't want to hurt her. If I were her though, I would be very afraid. Just please please don't keep this to yourself any longer. At your first available opportunity, call your medical doctor for an appointment for a consult. Ask the person on the phone at the dr's office for about 30 minutes for a consult concerning sleep
activity/sleepwalking or something along those lines if you are wondering what to say. This will give the doctor enough time with you for you to tell him/her all about it and for a referral to a specialist. Perhaps your wife could videotape you if you do it again before you see the doc. A picture IS worth a thousand words. We all do wierd things in our sleep from time to time--I took out a loaf of bread, sat down in the floor with it and promptly began to "fold" slices of bread as if they were clean clothes. I awoke to my husband laughing his butt off. But, what you are talking about has danger written all over it. Don't be embarrassed to tell the doctor. That would be much easier than trying to explain it to a jury of your peers when you are charged with 1st degree murder and you have lost your precious wife and you didn't even know you did it.
I realize I am speaking quite frankly to you; and, alas, this is indeed my intent.
So, if your post was not a hoax, please get some help as soon as you read this.
I don't think you are at all crazy, you just have something very unusual happening to you and it's bigger than all of us and you need someone who has a good track record for helping people who are dangerously active during sleep.
Let me know what happens, OK? And do take care. You also might consider making an escape plan together with your wife in case she has any trouble...even a method of self defense that will disable you but not hurt you. It beats the heck out of a loaded gun, which is what I also suggest as a back-up. Don't mean to take sides, my new friend, but you really need to wake up, both figuratively and literally. I wish you all the best.

ScarlettPony, Bahamut_0.........thanks for your concern. Bahamut_0 does your name come from FFX? Bahamut was one of my favorite Aeons in that game.
Anyway, there is more to my story that I haven't posted yet. I felt that my post was getting too long and it was getting late so I had to call it a night. I did post almost everything but I think that there are other important factors. One of them being that I am taking Amitriptyline. This was precribed to me to reduce my back pain. This medicine is an anti-depressant, but one of the side affects is that it helps with pain. I have 2 slipped discs in my back and I'm trying to avoid surgery. My doctor did not want to put me on a narcotic drug long term, because I could become addicted to the drug. My sleep problems have been around a lot longer than I've been taking this medication. Years longer. I don't do any other drugs and I don't smoke. I drink very rarely. I drink maybe once a year. Usually to bring in the new year.
Another important fact is that I do not get enough sleep. At least 5 out of 7 days of the week. M-F I don't get enough. That's true for pretty much everyone in my household. My wife is a full-time student and I work full time.
ScarlettPony I think that you are choosing side. Just remember that I'm on the same side too. I don't want anyone to get hurt. If something ever happened and my wife was injured (trust me) it would not be due to a decision I made. I would have been something that took place against my will. I think I will take your advice and get some help. What harm can could it do to be checked out by a doctor...right.
Bahamut I positive that it is not from starving. I rarely miss dinner....maybe 2-3 time per year I might make it to bed without eating dinner. I do however eat very late sometimes and go right to bed afterwards. That probably happens at least once per week.

I received two new scratches this past week on my right fore arm, unique in that I didn't wake up with them this time ... they just "appeared" about half way through the morning, without my noticing, and this time, they looked more like cat claw marks, wider, thicker, and deeper, each about two and a half inches long, about an inch apart from each other, and looked fresh. I am POSITIVE I did NOT rub up against anything throughout the morning. This morning, another unique scratch in that this one is curved, unlike the rest of them, which have been ruler straight, but like the others in that it looks like it was made with a pin or a needle.

ive heard of these kinds of things happening a lot. what i tend to get are scars that will appear out of nowhere. sometimes they will develop or grow over a period of time or fluctuate in size and visibility. they can get pretty nasty too, but they dont ever hurt or anything. at one time i actually had these big, round ones in the centers of my feet and wrists. i know it wasnt stigmata or anything but it sure freaked me out at the time. now i only have the ones on the left side of my body. the one on my wrist oddly now looks like a cross and the one on my foot is smaller and purple. i also have huge ones that go across my back. theyre about 1/4" and stick out pretty well and go nearly all the way across. they look like they could be really bad stretch marks, but, and i may be wrong about this, i dont think youre supposed to get stretch marks unless you grow more than youre intended to, like a pregnancy or weight gain. i also get these ones that come and go on either side of my scalp where my hair recesses and little scratch/cut like ones all over my limbs, hands, feet and torso. the oddest one is the dark one that goes perfectly down the center back of the entire length of my neck. its so perfect and uniform. anyway, who nows what causes it. i seem to remember hearing about a scientific explanation for it, but i dont remember what it was or where i heard it. if anyone does, please do tell cause id be interested to know. sorry that didnt help, but isnt it nice to know youre not the only one?

A few nights ago I was sitting here at my computer and my left hand felt itchy. As I reached to scratch it I looked down and saw a small cut on the back of my hand (about a half inch long)which was already starting to heal. I have absolutely no idea how I got this cut. The odd thing about it is that it is a very straight, precise-looking cut. One would almost think it had been done purposely with a very sharp knife. It is still itching me, moreso than most healing cuts do. What perplexes me is that I could get a cut like that and not know it until it began to itch.

I hadn't had any new scratches since May the first, but yesterday, I fell asleep on my couch, and when I woke up, I had one just above my right thumb. Mine never itch though, but same type of scratch ... looks like it's been made with a pin or a needle, very straight and precise, like yours, and already scabbed over, as if it had been done a day or two earlier.

Yes I too got these when I was little up until I was almost 18. then they stopped. Now my daughter get's them. And I don't know how.But it is creepy, plus you gotta think, when you sleep alot happens. Just because they aren't wide finger nail marks, doesn't mean you didn't do it yourself. But who knows, right? I remember I had nightmares over Freddy Krueger because of it.,..

If so many people get them some pictures would be good...

I'm not sure a picture would proove much, other than that there are scratches and/or cuts present. It wouldn't proove how they got there.

you should check out a condition called parasomnia. it's been documented and researched in canada. sounds exactly like what you've experienced. it is a known sleep disorder and has nothing to do with mental illness whatsoever.
good luck to you and your wife!

I had this problem for a week or so, about 7 years ago.
It puzzled me, as i would wake up with cut marks on my back, shoulders and upper arms. They were not deep, but clearly done with something sharp. I would not be woken, but i would notice them when i went for a shower in the morning.
The cuts were happening qute often, and when i got a new mattress, problem solved. It was part of a spring that was poking though the fabric.
Sometimes, it's really not paranormal in anyway!

I'm not trying to sound stupid here but there is one possibility to this, it could be the sheets you sleep with some allergic reaction or there should be something sharp stuck in the sheets
Just an idea

I think it would prove a lot as so many of you seem to have them.

Hi Mr Ed--
Thanks for your reply--this is Scarlett; I started this topic a while back and it is still going--I had no idea there were so many people who shared this experience!! Just about every possible physical cause has been explored and none of them fit. Most folks are not really saying or even meaning that this is necessarily a paranormal thing,it is just very strange!! I get notifications on my email when there is a response and so I have read most of the posts--Can't believe this topic is still active and I rarely reply anymore but you're right--there are sure alot of people who have this happen. It would be great if it were as easily answered as mattress springs, allergies, cats, hangnails, rashes and/or viruses, goosedown feather shafts, pins in the bedding, bedmates with active sleep patterns, etc. Most people have had this experience intermittently throughout their lives and are normal, everyday folks with no other strange experiences or paranormal tendencies. Some people have had other paranormal experiences, it doesn't seem to matter whether there have been other paranormal things happen to them or not. And there have been other types of scratches or burn-type occurances described here too. So, who knows. I certainly don't. It is just an interesting odd thing. Again, thanks for responding!
Enjoy life and take care,
Scarlett

I know what you're talking about. I've woken up with them too, and I've always just passed them off as nothing. Whatever it is, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. They've never hurt me, so I didn't worry. I would rule out evil spirits though because they happen to me wherever I go.

more probables reason:
somnambulism
drawer/ night table corners
walls
obsessive-compulsive disorder
less probable:
zombie
ghost

I get these quite often too. The scratches are so straight and narrow that they almost look like a hair stuck to your skin.
My dermatologist and makeup artist told me that in my case, it was because of an overuse of aspirin, mixed with mild hemophilia.
If that's the case, they will show up in places with little to no hair - your back, the inside of your arms, etc.

It's very simple. There is an assassin with needles hiding in your closet, who is hired by the CIA to get blood samples from you every night, because the CIA wants to clone you by the thousands and make your clones into a secret underground army which will take over the world someday.

i get them alll up my side when i sleep without a shirt on, just where you itch during the night and scratch too hard. My friend had 3 permanent freddy kreugar style scratches on his back, but we later found out these were stretch marks due to huge weight losss

Ya know ... your explanation makes more sense to me than thinking I'm sleeping with nails in my mattress ... and perhaps a hammer under my pillow and a saw on my night stand! Thanks for the giggle! :-)

LOL, my sentiments exactly--I purposely have had all mattresses that I've ever slept on made specifically with nails sticking out of them. I have had wild cats chained 1 foot from me as I sleep, as well as knives lining the bed all pointed toward me. haha
