I've actually heard that archaeologysts have discovered proof that the stones were moved from a quarry somewhere to where they stand in the present day. They are supposed to be guardian god - type representations (like the totems someone mentioned before). Whatever the origin and or meaning, they sure are incredible.

What Easter Island is partially really known for is the mystery of how the stones got to the place of where their are. Based on scientists related to the subject, it has been proven that these stones are not where they are originally from. The stones were actually found to be miles and miles away. Also, the carving is extremely fantastic with great skills. I'm sure the people of the tribe could of looked up to each stone face as a God, most likely polytheistic.

I wonder... has anyone tried to ever think of them as a stone as it perhaps could be a stone for a marking for where they burry their dead? I also wonder if they ever tried digging udner the mysterious stones across the world and see what they could uncover there. I bet they would find something.

I don't believe many people had that idea, but maybe somewhere. I don't think many people would be granted the permission to do that, but possibly their could always be something beneath...

I read somewhere that the natives call the Easter Island "Rapanui", the same way some books refer to the lost continent of Lemuria. There are some theories that Easter Island is what is left from Lemuria...

Check this site out, I provided it before though it includes some information on your bringing up of Rapanui:

I saw a documentary about Easter Island and they said that the rocks that the natives made the statues out of were too far away and too heavy to be where they are, so they don't know how the natives did it. Nice little mystery.

Couldn't they use wheels?

Thats exactly what I discussed ^ . The stones were proven to come far away and thats what makes up a big chunk of the mystery of Easter Island...
Now the question about wheels is, did they have that advanced technology on their island? This is like the mystery and questions of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramids...Many people are against the idea or fact that the Egyptian slaves dragged the large limestone bricks. Where would they get all that energy from if they were treated poorly?...
