Why exactly are people so frightened of ghosts? Are they afraid of getting hurt by them? Getting killed by them... Or just simply afraid of the unknown? I used to be deathly scared of the suckers, but now I just don't really care. If I hear a noise that I think might be something "paranormal" I just shrug it off. Ghosts can't really hurt you, just creep you out right?

I think alot of people are afraid of ghosts becuz of the role they portray in movies such as house on Haunted hill or Gothica. if we were not raised with this knowledge of ghosts then like you nmost of us would not be scared by them.

Nonsence. What about prior to movies or over-hyped forms of entertainment; further back before all the modern accounts and events. Paranormal, ghostly and many cases of supernatural reports have dated back a long long time and the same inherent and instinctual fear results of them; as with anything unknown that happens to disturb our norm.

people are afraid of most things that are unknown or unexplained. ghosts are just one of these things. this is also why people are afraid of death, because no one knows what happens.

It's as simple as death itself. Ghosts are a externalized, archetypal image of death, and people naturally fear what they don't understand. Especially death.

Ghost hate us because they have lost their mortality? Prove it.
I think that people, such as myself, are afraid of ghosts because it is the unknown. People are afraid of the unknown. If you walk into a dark room inside a supposedly haunted house then you're gonna be freaked, because you don't know what's in there. The unknown can be scary, because it could either be something good or bad. And bad is not a good thing.

I think people are afraid of what they don't understand. Plus it is really damn weird to think you are alone in your house and turn around to a see through being standing behind you. Not only that but they have a strange way of communicating. I think more people are starting to see them and communicate with them I think that the veil between dimensions is thinning and that eventually it will be normal for people to see ghosts:)
Ok about them not being able to hurt you. I don't totally believe that. I have made a few mad and they smack my back with a nasty headache, stomach ache or worse. They have grabbed me and held on pretty damn tight. I think that you can LET them hurt you...if you keep yourself bright, and strong and let go of the fear though they back off. I sort of see some ghosts like the dirtbag in the back alley. If he sees a woman walking with poor posture and her head slumped he sees her as someone that will not fight back and an easy target. Where as the girl with a determined walk and an air of confidence scares the loser. He just leaves her alone. I think if you look a weak person, entities or humans pick on you. If you look strong and are lacking fear they leave you alone.

Sorry if this has already been said, but people fear "Ghosts" because most fear what they dont understand, if its strange or unexplainable or different then its easier to demonize it as evil or something to fear, rather than to actually learn about it. Its the way of human kind to be ignorant about these things, instead of finding out about them.
We were all frightened once, that if we sailed to far over the ocean that we would fall of the end of the world, its only when we explored more and became less ignorant and more knowledgeable that we realised how stupid we had all been.
Its not the dead we should fear, its the living.

These are the reasons:
1. They are negative energies,
2. Come out at night,
3. They have hideous countenance,
4. Some suck blood of human life force, causing death, weakness,
5. They travel in another space-time and can scare and also, unfortunately, possess some people.

I never knew the spirit was so negative. So according to you everyone’s soul is negative energies, only come out at night, have hideous countenance, many suck our life force (I think you mean psychic vampires, and they dont suck blood either blood is of the physical, and spirits are of the mental and spiritual)

Human possession although possible is extremely rare, most claims are because of mental illness, and religious extremists fantasy and mass-hysteria, and from a fantasy because of popular media such as Hollywood. The most recorded number of "possessions" where in America after the release of the movie The exorcist.
No offence but you have a little bit of a negative view of the after life.

Carl Sagan in his book "A demon-haunted world" says that it is possible that the brain has evolved so that children are affraid of ghosts/beasts/demons

and consequently they don't sleep/stay to far from their parents. As a result, they survive. During all their lives, humans have a special relation with those kind of alleged apparitions, because of that.
I know this theory may sound weird but it looks plausible to me.
Of course Sagan didn't believe in ghosts, me neither.

Hi there
1. I hope you can differentiate 'ghosts' and 'spirits', because they arn't the same things.
2. I never said all are negatives energies. I hate blind assumptions by some people.
3. After life is a rather happy thing than a sad one, I felt really sad for your assumptions, Faeden! I know many wouldn't reply to me but due to your ignorance I would like to reply to you.
4. By the way I said some suck blood, I didn't said all, Also by the way I dislike people who vent their anger on others by excusing themselves out of ignorance (I did not say it is you).
5.Be responsible and learn not to give others the impression of immaturity, espescially in making blind, silly assumptions.
No offence to you.

The 'negative' here refers to the negative emotions expressed by people, they can be classified as the terms of metaphysics, and your assumptions of 'negativity' is wrong. What do you mean by negativity? Have you seen spirits before? Do you know how they travel? A wise man would shut his mouth rather than make assumptions of the things he dosen't know.
The space-time , or dimension there is different because of the disparity and separation of two molecualr-size realms. How much do scientists know?
If you really want to know how spirit travel...spirits can travel in another realm and also in the partial space-time fields where man exists. You eye can't see the 'otherside' because the eye's smallest particles are made of molecules, and are not functional at the level of atoms, that is why you cannot see spirits.
But why can some people see them? And why can some people who consume psychedelics see spirits? This is because the eyes they used are not of this material ones but that which their souls possesses, human soul too exists in a smaller-than-atom-field and can thus see things that have space and time dispared, as in dreams for example. This requires the soul to disconnect from the physical body so that the body in the other dimension can be utilised.
Anyway, most spirits travel in another dimension where your eyes can't see them, so who control this occurence and principle? Obviously a great being(s).

all people are afraid of what they don't understand. unless we learn about them and know how they 'work" maybe then we souldn't be so scared. in additon, parents force these fears into us as kids (boogeyman) and it stays with us for quite some time.

Well, why are some people afraid of spiders?
Because they have eight legs, scurry along quickly and just generally look creepy.
It's the same with ghosts, if I saw a person, and he's/her body was transparent, and she moved through walls, I think I'd be thinking ''what the .... is that'' also..

Why are people afraid of ghosts? Two reasons. First they are (as has been said) a visual reminder of the unknown nature of death itself. Second ghosts can be extremely dangerous.
Ok folks think about it you can't see a ghost, can't touch it, can't fight back against it. Now a ghost can see you, move at the speed of thought, and move objects. NOthing stops them from picking up a knife and sticking it in your throat or heart. Things have been further muddled because while dangerous spirits are MORE common today then before theres an increasing movement among the terminally stupid to tell people that all the methods we DO have to protect ourselves don't work and then to give us nonsensical answers on what to do.
