One thing that I haven't heard mentioned yet (although I do admit, I was reading fairly quickly and not following given links) is premature burial.

There've been a lot of documented cases, historically, of people being declared dead who actually weren't. So, picture this: you're living in a time when disease isn't understood.

Something starts going through the village... maybe even something like rabies, that can cause aggressive behaviour, aversion to water, hyperactive reflexes, insomnia, and general malaise along with a variety of other symptoms... someone remembers that someone died recently, and maybe there were odd noises heard around that person's grave... you dig it up and find that the person inside didn't just lie there quietly like a dead person should, but has blood on their hands from clawing at the inside of the coffin, maybe bit their lip and drew more blood, shows signs of having been awfully active in there.... In a superstitious time when the Church broke everything down into the works of God and the Devil and there wasn't a lot of education, one obvious solution could easily be that this is proof that the dead person was up and walking and feeding on the living.

Personally, I very much enjoy the poetic and sensual imagery of the modern vampire. That isn't incompatible with being curious about the history and folklore behind it, or knowing that it's an extremely romanticized version.

Hmm, I don't know. I know in Anne Rice's novels it does but you probably knew that already and that's why you're asking. wink2.gif
I have a friend who knows a lot about the vampire legend and myths so I'll ask him and let you know.

Edit

Here, I found this:

QUOTE
In IWTV the book, Lestat does say to Louis, "He's dead, you idiot!" and "You don't drink after they're dead! Understand that!" But he clarifies this by saying, "You'll die if you do that." "He'll suck you right down into death with him if you cling to him in death. And now you've drunk too much besides, you'll be ill."

This idea is mimicked in the movie when Lestat says to Claudia, "You must stop before the heart stops, lest the death drag you down with it."

The meaning here is that the vampire must stop drinking before the victim dies so that he or she will not be pulled into the death as well when the victim is actively dying, it is the victim's will and consciousness which will pull the vampire into death, not the blood.

Once the victim is dead, however, the blood does not have the power to pull the vampire drinking it into death because the victim's will and consciousness is gone.

In the movie, when Lestat says incredulously, "You let me drink DEAD blood?!" and Claudia answers, "One thing you taught me, NEVER drink from the DEAD!" this gives the impression that drinking blood from a victim who has already died can be fatal to a vampire, but this idea is NOT in the books. Drinking dead blood is described by Anne as distasteful but not toxic and certainly not fatal.

Found this here: Anne Rice FAQ
I'll still ask my friend though. See what he knows about it.

A question for you guys:

Is there a good series of Vampire books out there? Much like Rice's Vampire Chronicles, though since she's retired and since the quality of her work has declined since the early 90's I'm looking for something else.

Any ideas? I've heard a little bit about Vampire: The Masquerade, what is this? I've been told the TV series The Covenant was based on it, though it's some sort of RPG game?
NightMoon
Mad Manfred, check out author Tanith Lee and her vampire series "Blood Opera." There are three vampire novels of that series. The first book is called "Dark Dance"; the second book is called "A Personal Darkness" and the third and last in the series is called "Darkness, I".

Tanith Lee writes other vampire novels too. Here are some of them:
"A Blood of Roses"
"Sabella" (I've never read this one),
"White as Blood" and
"Vivia"...

huh.gif Either it's a joke, and is in extremely poor taste almost to the point of being offensive, or "everything he says is true" in which case this is not only a sign of serious mental disturbance but is criminal.

There's a difference between psychopathic behaviour and vampirism... possibly the former contributed to beliefs in the latter, but the fact that psychopaths exist does not prove that vampires exist.

Date rape, violent rape, and abusive behaviour are very real problems that many women have to deal with. I really find it difficult to "have a good laugh" about it.
kikuchiyo
true, bad taste in the "good laugh" department.

Vampirism is not a "freepass" to violent behavior, ( according to me) it much more of a style then a way of life.

I think vampires are real. I mean they've been around for millions of years. Think about it. There's books about them and movies. Or that commercial for the Ritz crackers. So I think they are real. I always read about them. I would like to know if there are actually some vampires out there. One of my friend thinks i'm really weird for thinking they are real. I may be weird but i really don't care.

Well, let's sit back and look at modern technology and urban legend for a minute. Okay, vampires are supposed to drink blood and this would do one of two things to a victim. 1) Shock the hell out of them, thus making them file crazy amount of police reports and such, which would, I'm sure make headlines, and we would all know about it. 2) Kill them. With modern technology and forensic science, any kind of gruesome death is going to be investigated to the utmost extent. If a person was killed by a vampire, again there would be some sort of public record on it, at least a conspiracy if the government wanted to cover it up. We don't have any factual information to back vampires, so I think we are all safe from getting our necks gnawed on!

I wonder how a myth like the vampires still exist, we have medical answer for the "blood lust" effect for some leucemia patient, the original vampires didn't drink blood the drinked the "life force" of it's victims through there dreams, corps will get bigger after do to trapped gas...

well I guess it's like religions or other shady concepts, no matter how good or how scientifically accurate your arguments are there still going to be "true believers".

That was his father.

Bram Stoker based his character "Count Dracula" on his son, Prince Draculya.

Based on scientific evidence Draculya had a rare (and proven) blood disorder.

This disorder made him highly addicted to the smell, texture and taste of blood. Unfortunately this disorder also causes the victim to be severely allergic to the substance that they are addicted to.

Hence, his pale pasty skin, puffy eyes and his sensitivity to the light. Overall, the reason for all his odd behaviour.

It's the same condition that eventually caused him to die of natural causes at a young age.

So, basically what everyone has been saying...a group of people role-playing.

Role-playing is fine, so long as it doesn't go too far and accept that there are no true vampires.

There are however hundreds of idiotic individuals who wish they could be. Calling themselves and some believing themselves to be vampires they do stupid things such as injest or inject themselves with blood.

Funny how there was a serious lack of these individuals before Interview with the Vampire made it's big screen debut.

Okay. Point blank. There are no vampires, as much as you would like to believe that there are. It's just like love. It doesn't exist. Love is something that was made up by greedy florists, jewelers, and Hallmark to make money off of. Vampires are just something else to capitalize from. Hmm, I think I'll be a vampire for Halloween. Spend money on costume. I think I will buy Interview with the Vampire on DVD. Spend some more money. Etc, etc, etc. If you honestly believe that there are vampires, then I urge you to seek help. The only thing that's even close to a vampire are those people who are so caught up in the illusion of them that they want to believe that they are vampires. They drink blood and dress all goth and stuff. It's really retarded if you ask me. I'm not trying to argue with nayone, just stating my opinion, so I hope I didn't make anyone mad.

Have you ever seen anything about the "vampires" in New Orleans? They are goth but they don't drink blood, they drink the closest thing to it...red wine. How lame-ola! I am facinated with certain things, i.e., the paranormal and All My Children, but I don't change my whole life and become a weirdo for it. I still like to pretend that I am at least a little normal. Maybe it is because I am probably a lot older than all of you. I have closed my mind to a lot of things over the years. Maybe two years ago, before I finanly found God, I would have agreed with you on the whole vampire thing, but not now. I have grown too much for that.
