Wow that's a hell of a lot of users.

I have a feeling though that search engine spider "Inktomi Slurp" may have something to do with this, with it's tendancy to use multiple IP addresses when indexing a web site.

Saru, is UM being advertised somewhere? It seems that the record is broken in leaps and bounds...

Not that I know, although we have had quite a few articles featured on other news sites recently.

Look no further than bots that flood and AOL....I've had users show up 7 or more times.

It's not unusual to have a large number of spider 'users' online, it simply means that a search engine is currently indexing the forum in some detail. Some search engines only register as a single user, however others seem to use multiple IPs and show up as several users.

I've looked this up and it seems to be quite common, it's certainly nothing to be concerned about, quite the contrary in fact. It probably means the site is going to appear more in a search engine, or existing entries are being updated.

Once the spider has finished indexing the site, the spider 'users' will disappear and the users online count will drop back down to normal again.

Update

I've updated the bot recognition list and set spiders to visible, it should now be possible for visitors to see the spiders on the users online list.

I've noticed that on most meta-search sites, anything with these key words usually brings up this site

Unexplainable
Mystery
Mysteries
Unknown
And many others! Way to go Mr.Saruman!

The search engine spiders will no longer be visible in the on-line list again, I don't think there is any advantage to having them there.

That would still count as one, it counts unique IP addresses only, so opening several browser windows wouldn't make any difference.
