Anyone willing to place bets on another Sydney/West Coast Grand Final? I'm not that confident just yet, but who's to say *shrugs*

Not a chance in hell tongue.gif
AztecInca
^Well at least Hell doesn`t have to freeze over, as thats the only way Collingwood will make it tongue.gif

In all seriousness I would be putting money on Port and Geelong to make the GF. West Coast and Sydney are in there will a chance but I have a feeling Collingwood may just be able to get over the line against the swans at the MCG, especially as it could be the end of Buck's career. Hawthorn are just a joke and will be smashed by Adelaide this week, who could be a smoky. They have won a premiership from seventh before. Kangaroo's I feel may just be outclassed in the end however I wouldn`t put a preliminary final out of their reach.

Well since the pies beat sydeny twice this year, I suddenly have the feeling its sydneys turn.

Port MUST beat the eagles. If they dont they will face the one of the two teams that they don't like playing in finals in collingwood or sydney....

I dont think collingwood will make it, however.... lets remember that we beat sydney twice.... love playing in adelaide (if port lose) and if we got past that then we would face the winner of geel/north at the msg... so its 2 home games and one away technically. Though, I think we have our work cut out getting past this week.

That's the ticket. A little pessimism never hurt anybody, lol. To be fair, I think you may be right. Last time Sydney took on Collingwood, they were dealing with the emotions of the return of Nathan Buckley. True, they'll probably have the emotions of possibly Buckley's last game ever, but it won't be as profound. If they keep their form from last round going - which is no guarantee after the year Sydney has had - then Collingwood should have a tough week.

And remember - Sydney ARE the kings of September football, lol devil.gif

Ugh. What a disgrace.

4, Repeat 4 Victorian teams in the finals. Whats worse is that one of them, the Cats actually seem to be able to take the flag this year. It will be a sad day indeed if one of the hated Vics take the flag.

Fortunately the Power are there to make sure the Cats ambitions do not grow to far.

However that said best of luck to all and may the best team wins... And as Port is the best team then its inevitable I guess :L

But as long as we keep the tradition of beating the vics alive I'll be happy. Though if the Crows win I will be pissed off as well.

Thelinked-imageare going to tame & lame them kitty Cats...''here kitty kitty'' devil.gif lol!
AtlantisRises
lmao.

Indeed I look forward to it REB.

Should be a final series to remember, apart from the Cats ther3e haven't been any really stand out teams this season and port showed that the cats are far from unbeatable.

Certainly will look forward the final as well. A Port V Crows final would be incredible.
REBEL
The POWER have WEST COAST EAGLES @ home this weekend AR, and already i read/hear talk of the EAGLES going in as underdogs.
Just hope that dosn't have some kind of psychological effect as we all know the POWER relish that underdog status...

Later.
Subtemperate
The chances of port vs adelaide are very remote, given If adelaide wins it plays the loser of cats/north... and if they get through that, they play the winner of port/eagles.... So unless port loses this week, that ain't a chance of happening.

I am hoping for an all vic grand final... tongue.gif
AztecInca
^I doubt it, in my opinion Geelong is the only Victorian side capable of making it. The Roo's may be the outside chance for Victoria, as I just dont see Collingwood or Hawthorn winning three games againts the other sides in the eight. At least Hawthorn definately have no chance what so ever, they are just too young, inexperienced and lack the quality and form of the other sides.

AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A brief outline of the history of the Australian Football League:

The Australian Football League has come a long way from it's formation in 1896. Initially known as the Victorian Football League, the name was changed in 1990 to the Australian Football League after the addition of interstate teams during the previous decade. The league, which began as a Victorian icon, has know grown to the premier league in Australia, a league in which every young footballer aspires to play in. Below is a list of key dates in the progress of the Australian Football League.

1896
The formation of the Victorian Football League. Initial teams Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Melbourne, Fitzroy and South Melbourne form the league after leaving the Victorian Football Association. St Kilda and Geelong follow shortly after.

1897
First season. Essendon wins Premiership.

1907
University joins the league.

1908
Richmond is admitted into the league.

1912
Player numbering on the back of jumpers is introduced.

1915
University disbands.

1924
The Brownlow Medal is introduced. (Award for best player of the year)

1925
Hawthorn,North Melbourne and Footscray join the VFL.

1932
The VFL becomes an incorporated company, composed of 12 teams.

1957
VFL matches are televised (last quarter only).

1970

1983
The Swans undergo a second name change in as many years, becoming officially known as the Sydney Swans. The Grand Final is telecast direct to the United States for the first time for cable television.

1987
The West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears are included in the expanded 14 team competition.

1990
League becomes known as the Australian Football league. Collingwood wins the first premiership under the new name.

1991
The Adelaide Crows enter the competition. A final six is approved. The first Grand Final is played at VFL Park. (Scare Crows would have been a better name) rofl.gif

1992
The league renames VFL Park as AFL Park, Waverley. West Coast Eagles become the first interstate team to win the Premiership.

1994
The final eight is implemented.

1995
The Fremantle Dockers join the AFL.

Collingwood have the ability to win 3 matches against teams in the 8, its really whether they are up to it mentaly, and whether the kids can stand up physically after a long year. I mean.. we have beaten north, I think we were 2 goals away from West Coast and Geelong.... 9 points or so off hawthorn, beat adelaide in adelaide (before they beat us at home) and have beaten sydney 2 times. Port is the only team we didn't put up a good showing against.....
AztecInca
^No doubt, you are capable of matching most sides in the top eight, however I feel that the likes of Port, Geelong, Sydney and West Coast will prove themselves to be too good in a final especially in the later rounds. Time will tell though.

How do you feel about the lack of Collingwood players in the All-Australian squad, Eddie believes its a conspiracy. tongue.gif
Subtemperate
Well, I am sick of our players not getting recognised.... I mean, one of three teams without a player nominated. I don't think its a conspiracy, I think you have to be Nathan Buckley to get recognition in a collingwood guernsy. For Example, Sav Rocca is inside the top 20 for all time goals kicked.... At collingwood, all you ever heard from commentators was he under achieved..... Then he goes to the kangaroos... is in and out of there side, kicks less goals for them then he did for us... and all of a sudden hes a champion...? I always thought he was, but if he didn't play for the roos, I think noone else would class him as one.

Heath Shaw has had an excellent year, and is a victim of his own excellence. The fact is he played as good as ANY player in the comp in the first half the year. He was the general of our entire team, and hes only played about 50 games. Then he just goes back to being reliable and an injury stops him from having the run... but he still was good in each game, just not explosive like he can be.... The fact they decided Roger hayden from fremantle should make the list, given hes playing in a team down the bottom end... and the fact shaw had 70 more touches, 30 more marks, more tackles.... I mean, just how exactly do they look at a players consistancy?

...And Matthew Richardson makes the nomination lists? I know he hasn't a shot at getting into the team, but when you are the only forward a team has.... and you still don't kick all that many goals.... how can you be all australian.

That is indeed a disgrace, he is by far one of the most under-achieving forwards in the league, he does not deserve a place in the All-Australian squad especially when there are mid-fielders who are more reliable shots on goal. I`m happy Reiwoldt and Fisher made it into the squad but was a little suprised at Dal Santo's inclusion. He is a class-act, however this year he's been rather quite, Montagna apart from a few quiet weeks at the end probably deserved it more.
Subtemperate
Well I think Scott Burns has a reason to be annoyed, I mean... he has been awesome this year... and because he spends most time on the bench of any midfielder, I would think he could be one of the interchange in the all aussie team lol

But...in saying that, I think Collingwood have a number of players who could be all aussies sometime in the future. Tyson Goldsack is a gun.... given hes played 13 games.... He will be a champion for us... not to mention Pendlebury and Thomas, who both should be excellent for us over a number of years..... Add in a few others with unknown ability... like Brad Dick... and we should have a number of chances of getting there in the future (... and I expect heath shaw to make it sooner or later)

*hand-stands back-flips all over the house*

Subtemperate
I can't believe you only won by 3 points.... I mean, Cousins went down.. Judd was limping everywhere and ended up not able to finish the match.... Kerr wasn't in the side..... Thats a pretty crappy west coast team considering, and you just got over them tongue.gif

Oh well... guess we won't knock you out of it this year.... tongue.gif
REBEL
We're pacing ourselves Subby...it's all part of the POWER strategy, let the opponents think they have ya, then hit them hard in the last quarter. lol!!!
Subtemperate
...Wait till they are injured, and hope they can't score in the last quarter more like it tongue.gif
REBEL
lol!

Cousins is gone for the season(hamstring) Judd looked a wreck(serious groin) big mistake playing him, they risked it and now could miss next week.
Big loss for the Eagles all round.
Subtemperate
Sydney and collingwood will be licking their lips at the possibility of playing a depleted eagles next week... grin2.gif
AtlantisRises
Ah.

Twas good to see Port get over the top of the Eagles.

However I must admit that they should have played a lot better then they did. It was luck and a depleted eagles lineup rather then their own skill that got them through...
REBEL
Yea too right AR...but you have to admit POWER ruffled(injured innocent.gif )a few of them EAGLES feathers, we came out of it injury free with that all important weeks rest. thumbsup.gif

Wow... how about that... collingwood playing their best game for the year in the finals..... grin2.gif

Eagles better watch out lol

4 vic teams to 2 interstate it is now... grin2.gif
Paranoid Android
Well done Collingwood. 3-out-of-3 against the Swans. Can anyone say "bogey team", lol. Good luck for the rest of the finals, Subby. I'll be barracking for Collingwood from now on, I think grin2.gif
Subtemperate
Well to be honest, I will too... tongue.gif

We have a pretty good chance, if we play like we did last night. We play a depleted eagles line up, which I think we should beat since we lost to them by a couple of goals with their full squad earlier this year when they were in good form.....

Then if we get past that, we play a game against either geelong or north at our home ground...... I would think both those teams would prefer to play west coast then us... given the fact we tend to rise to the big occassion (unless its a grand final lol)
REBEL

Well at least a Victorian side won, even if it was "shudders" Collingwood. Why couldn`t they beat bloody Adelaide in round 22 Subby?
Subtemperate
well, same thing happened in 2002.... we got flogged by the bulldogs who were out of the eight, and then we went ovre to adelaide and beat port who finished top.... In saying that, 3 players came into our side and they all make a difference. Rusling is excellent, and is getting better all the time, Fraser is obviously our best ruck... and well, we all know how good didak can be. Truth be told Adelaide needed to win more then we did....

^Rebel this is not a Port Adelaide appreciation thread, dont force myself or Subby to do something about such posts. tongue.gif

Anyway Geelong have reminded us again why they are the favourites for the flag, the Roo's were lucky the Cats missed as many as they kicked in the first three quarters. How a side that finishes in the top 4 can possibly be beaten by just over 100 points even against the top side is beyond me, they certainly have a lot to prove against the Hawks this week.
Subtemperate
Yeah... and all of a sudden I don't want to play the cats... I have changed my tune tongue.gif

Port were lucky, and I honestly feel IF it is port and geelong in the final.... Geelong will murder you.....

But... who knows what will happen.... I really hope we can get over the eagles this week (getting rid of another interstate team)... and whilst i would love to go all the way this year...I am already happy with the season, and in the next few years we are going to become a team thats pretty hard to beat.

I hear ya Aztec, i was overcome with finals emotion at the time, you know how it is... hmm.gif
I try to keep future postings more unbiased and liberal

As for the CATS they played awesome but i'm not totally convinced, they may have caught the ROOS on what looked to be a very very ordinary day for them?
Yet to be hammered like that they didn't deserve to be in the finals...i think the TIGERS or BLUES (cellar dwellers) would have given the CATS a better run for their money. lol!
Subtemperate
I disagree...I think score lines in a game in the finals means nothing. Once you realise your going to lose... theres no point playing for percentage anymore... make sure you get through the game ok... and regroup. Thats how most huge margins come about...... It also can work the other way... once a tam has it in the bag, they take the foot off the accelerator and the other teams scores a good few goals....
Subtemperate
I thought Id post this article, given the discussion on the topic earlier in the thread. Its from theage.

PROMINENT drug-addiction experts have defended the AFL's controversial three strikes illicit drugs policy in a new series of advertisements published today.

The ad is a letter which will appear in several newspapers — including The Age. Twenty-one addiction, law enforcement and medical experts write that the AFL's policy is "probably as effective as can be achieved" in an era where young people are regularly exposed to illicit drugs and substance abuse. "We believe that the AFL has been a leader in responding to illicit drugs," the open letter says.

The letter also attacks those who the authors believe have criticised the policy on political grounds.

"We commend and support the AFL and the AFL Players Association for taking a reasoned, sensible and strong leadership stance in relation to these issues, and for resisting the pressures from populist quarters to use such issues for partisan ends," it says.

"For those of us at the coalface of treating drug addiction and developing policy, watching the criticism is frustrating."

The expression of support will ease the pressure on the AFL, which has come under renewed attack in recent weeks for failing to take a tougher line on offenders.

Last week, federal Sports Minister George Brandis asked the anti-sports doping watchdog for its advice on how out-of-competition testing for illicit drugs could be strengthened.

Both Senator Brandis and the Minister for Ageing, Christopher Pyne, have said for months that the AFL's leniency undermines the Government's tough-on-drugs message.

But Nick Crofts, director of the Turning Point Drug and Alcohol Agency, said the AFL's approach in fact mirrored the current approach to dealing with illicit drug use. Rather than pushing offenders straight into the hands of law enforcement, Professor Crofts said users were now diverted to rehabilitation services.

"Any policy related to illicit drugs and sport should make player welfare its paramount objective," he said. "So we're calling on those who are using the policy for political ends to back off, leave the AFL alone. Essentially, we think they have got it right."

The AFL said yesterday it would not back away from its three strikes policy, which was deliberately developed to reflect the best medical practice.

"We consulted widely with drug and rehabilitation experts on our policy," said AFL spokesman Patrick Keane. "We will discuss the operation of the policy at the end of the season. But it is operating in its current format."

While the league co-operates with the World Anti-Doping Agency on punishing athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs, Mr Keane said the AFL was one of only two sporting codes in Australia that had an illicit drugs policy.

"There's us and the NRL and then 88 sports that do not," he said.

While it would appear that Collingwood with a near full-strength and in-form side should defeat the Eagles, I am leaning towards the Eagles as its in Subiaco and even without Judd, Kerr and Cousins their side is still an impressive one. Well, you're right on that one grin2.gif Extra-time victory, very impressive. Now Collingwood runs into Geelong...... Geelong are going to be massive favourites. But who knows - maybe the week break will throw the Cats off their game unsure.gif

It looks like both of last years Grand finalists aren't going to play much of a role this year, neither side winning a single finals match

^While Collingwood were very impressive last night I just don`t see them being able to defeat the Cats nor do I believe the Roo's or Hawks can overcome Port Adelaide. I`m tipping a Port v Geelong Grand final, where it could go either way. Tonight, I really couldn`t care less. tongue.gif
