My fiance's occupation requires him to have long periods away. A couple of months ago, the eve of one of his returns, I lay in bed, wide awake, mentally figuring out my itinerary of meeting him the next day. The room was in darkness and the light had been switched off about 10 minutes. Suddenly I heard a noise. It sounded semi-heavy, like something being pulled across something, muffled by fabric. I lay very still and listened in bewilderment. I knew there was nothing on my duvet; nothing was slowly falling to the ground and my dressing gown was too light to make that sound if it was somehow slipping off it's hook. The noise, whatever it was, was right by my ears. I was alone in the house, no pets and as far as I'm aware, vermin free (never any mouse or rat evidence)
It suddenly occured to me that the noise was like someone pulling something across the carpet. I was terrified. By now the noise had stopped but I had ears on stalks listening for any other activity. There was none. I had to sleep with the bedside tv on!
I was surprised to find that my other half wasn't scornful. Apparently one night months ago.as I slept, he was woken by the sound of a plastic bag being trashed and stamped around the bedroom by what he imagined were feet as heavy as a humans. He couldn't actually see a plastic bag in the half light but that's what it sounded like. In the cold light of day he convinced himself that he imagined it.
Not long ago he and I were surfing the 'net and come across sections on Poltergeists; I'd always imagined their MO was the same as ghosts. But it seems that poltergeists start with dragging noises or shuffling noises. I don't know why or how that should be but I'm no troubled adolescent.!
