FERNDALE, Mich. -- A woman is facing up to 20 years in prison on accusations she attempted to bring a syringe full of heroin to her son at his suburban Detroit high school.
Sheila Black was arrested Tuesday in the parking lot of Ferndale High School after police say they received a tip that the woman was planning to deliver the heroin during her son's lunch hour.
The 41-year-old Metamora resident was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of possessing less than 50 grams of heroin with the intent to deliver. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10 in district court.
Black told police her son had threatened to hurt himself if he didn't get the heroin, so Black agreed to buy the drug in Detroit and bring it to him, Ferndale police Detective George Hartley said. Hartley said Black bought 10 packs of heroin for $10 each.
"She took one of the packs of heroin and cooked it up in a spoon and drew the liquid into a syringe so he could take it into a bathroom at school and shoot it up," Hartley told The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak.
Black was arrested in front of the main doors of the school. She was in violation of a Lapeer County court order barring her from having contact with her son, police said.
Black has no criminal record. The court's probation department said Black has mental health and substance abuse problems and recommended she receive counseling. source
