Study launched on air pollution
Scientists are seeking 100 volunteers for a major study on the health effects of personal exposure to air pollution, such as traffic emissions and smoking.
Researchers from Birmingham University are exploring the air toxins that members of the public are exposed to as they carry out their daily activities.
The team wants non-smoking, working adults in good health to carry a small briefcase with them for five days.
It will contain a personal air sampler and they will also keep a diary.
Volunteers will need to list their activities and provide a urine sample each day so that comparisons can be made between the level of pollutants in the personal air sampler, and in the various places where the volunteers have been.
They will be paid £50 on completion of the five-day trial.
Professor Roy Harrison, Professor of Environmental Health and Principal Investigator on the project, explained: "We are looking for volunteers who live in urban, suburban and rural areas of the West Midlands.
"We will also look into lifestyle factors influencing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, such as visiting pubs and clubs.
"Through this and subsequent research into health effects, we are hoping to gain a better understanding of the effects of exposure to air pollutants on the health of the general public, as this has not been investigated fully in the past."
