The mayor of Rhodes, like many before him, is trying to raise 180 or so million dollars to ressurect the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the wonders of the ancient world. I hope and pray that he does. In our sterilized world today, we need a bit of the aesthetics...the beauty....that is supposed to surround us. The glory of ancient egypt and china, the hanging gardens of babylon, the secret temples of sweet darling Tlazolteotl, long ago ravaged to the ground by the pig Cortez. I want a little beauty. I want a little magic in the world. Is that so wrong? I hope in my lifetime to see the Colossus reborn.

if the mayor is able to achieve this, quite amazing, goal, he'd be my hero. this, and the staue of zeus, are my favorite of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
by the way, those are some pretty awesome statue pictures. do you know where the statue of the guy coming out of the ground is at? i've seen smaller versions of that Jesus statue in Mexico. that Samurai statue is pretty cool too.

The last one is called The Awakening and it is supposed to be located in some park in Washington DC...
It is one of those weird Post-Modern art sculptures.

Well you'll probably like this one, it's a statue in Uruguay that represent the last thing you see of some one drowning. Pretty nice and unique...that would make wounder of the world no. 9000 or something.

Culture is becoming dangerously underated in our modern society. I think ressurecting the Colossus of Rhodes is an excellent idea.

Why built the old? When we could built something new that would represent something closer to our modern culture like the sculpture the moder work force in downtown montreal or the John Lenon statue in Cuba, now that would be moving forward.
A colossus, would be interesting but not as interesting as something meaningful in our modern lives.

well like Daila lama meditating, Goldorak or Christo. Maybe some one with a political importance like Ghandi maybe.
The way i see it all statue most represent something, not just how rich you are.

bin laden would be a bit contraversial...but definitly odd.

I say, stick with Colossus. I too don't think we really need any more statues right now, let alone controversial statues. Let's wait another year or two, maybe people will have a sense of humor by then. And another thing- let's not have any discussion of pop culture icons as statues, okay? I'm sailing into some random port somewhere...and looning over me is the cast of "Friends", immortalized in marble. Yup, I go with Colossus.

Ever heard of lay lines? those magnetic fields which criss cross the globe? they are believed to be formed by underground lava flows. anyway, at the intersections of these lay lines are where alot of the ancient landmarks have been found to exist... the city planners in boston think that by making these intersections look beautiful we are giving back to our earth and healing it from the damages of modern society.
