Even by todays standards somethings are beyond our abilities. We cant even lift large stones out of quarries as done 2500 yrs ago using our modern machines. Once they triggered the "protective elements" of the hole, nothing in the way of a mechanical solution and its brute force will ever conquer this thing.Too much time and effort went into this project. If its ever to be solved it will be by out thinking it.-usdi Agaluga

OAK ISLAND AND THE MONEY PIT

The longest and probably most famous treasure hunt in history deals with Oak Island and the Money Pit. Incredibly, for more than two hundred years since its initial discovery in 1795, the Money Pit has become the centre of speculation for untold riches including pirate booty, Marie Antoinette's jewels, the treasure of lost civilizations, and even the original Shakespeare manuscripts allegedly written by Francis Bacon.

Although numerous artifacts have been recovered on the island, none of these finds provide the identity of who originally constructed the Money Pit, or to the nature of their treasure. In fact, the only profit recognized to date is by those who have bought and resold the island, published numerous books or articles on the subject, or by those local residents who reside on the South Shore and who have capitalized on its intriguing history.

The official story of Oak Island began in 1795, when three boys from the small town of Chester on the eastern shore of Mahone Bay, paddled across the bay to a small island where a large number of red oak trees grew. By following a path they found themselves at an old oak tree in the centre of a clearing. Inspecting the tree, they saw that a severed branch overhung a depression in the ground and from this limb dangled a ship's block.

Excited by stories that the island was the legendary haunt of pirates, it did not take the boys long to dig beneath the tree. Shoveling out the loose earth, they found a thirteen-foot wide, well-defined circular shaft, and at four feet they unearthed a layer of flagstones uncommon to the island.

At a depth of every ten feet they found a platform made of oak logs, extending across the shaft. Finally realizing that the task was too much for them, the three boys returned to the mainland to seek help. A task that took them nine years to find backers to provide the equipment they required.

Work on the site was resumed in 1804 when a company was formed to assist the boys in the search for the treasure. The newly-formed company had only just begun when they struck a second tier of oak logs, similar to the first. Ten feet lower they supposedly found a tier of charcoal, and ten feet further a tier of putty. Another version states that the putty was found at the forty-foot level, and that coconut fibre and yet another oak platform was discovered.

At a depth of ninety feet the searchers uncovered a flat stone, three feet long and one foot wide, and on the reverse side, crude letters and figures had been cut into the stone. According to tradition, the syndicate had hopes that this inscription would throw some valuable light on their search, but unfortunately they could not decipher it. Eventually, however, in 1864 the stone was interpreted to read: "TEN FEET BELOW TWO MILLION POUNDS."

Yet, in 1804, when the searchers returned the next morning they found that the Money Pit was flooded to within thirty-three feet of the top (coincidentally, the highest level in the Masonic Scottish Rite is the 33rd degree). Despite all their efforts, the water level remained at the same height. As a result, their work was abandoned for the year.

The story continues that in the spring of 1805, with the idea of draining the Money Pit, the treasure-hunters dug another shaft alongside the original. Overnight the second shaft also filled with water, again to within thirty-three feet of the top, and that was the end of the first organized treasure hunt on Oak Island.

In 1897, the probe drill of another company of treasure-seekers apparently encountered two oak chests at the 150-160 foot level. It was also from this depth that a scrap of parchment was brought to the surface with writing on it that looked like the letters "vi" in an Elizabethan script. At the 171 foot level, the same probe drill supposedly encountered an iron plate or hard-cast cement which seemed to be a floor or ceiling.

In 1909, a young Franklin D. Roosevelt bought shares in the Old Gold Salvage and Wrecking Company, whose subsequent effort was no more successful than any of the others. What had fascinated the young Roosevelt most was the idea that someone had constructed such an ingenious and deadly labyrinth. FDR retained a life-long interest in the Money Pit and even during the activities of World War II, Roosevelt wrote letters of enquiry concerning the latest attempt to recover the presumed treasure.

In The Money Pit Mystery, author Rupert Furneaux presents a very interesting theory as to who exactly was "Mr. X" -- the "evil" genius who seems to have enjoyed the thought that the Money Pit might be found. Still, nobody has been able to confirm the two clues that Furneaux relies most heavily upon to establish Mr. X's year of endeavour. First, it has never been verified that one or all of the flood tunnels run precisely fourteen degrees south of east from Smith's Cove to the Money Pit. Secondly, that the angle of declination demonstrated by a stone triangle found on the island was exactly seven degrees and not six and one half or six -- or even seven and one-half.

What Furneaux fails to realize, although he does inadvertently hint at it in several places, is that the stone triangle may have been built by someone other than Mr. X, and that not only military engineers of the highest rank possessed the necessary skills to develop such an intricate system of flood works. Perhaps it is even possible that the original builders of the Money Pit left their ground markings, the stone triangle and drilled rocks, for later groups so that they could recover the treasure, or to tantalize them beyond frustration. It is also possible that the original works have been elaborated upon by subsequent groups who also were "in on the secret."

The mystery of Oak Island has not been solved for lack of investment in time or money, which is rather ironic when you think about it. Unfortunately, due to the foolishness of many of the treasure-seekers during the past 200 years, the site has been disturbed to such an extent that most of the evidence that could have led to the identity of the original architects of the Money Pit has been lost.

On another level, other hidden clues that hint at the true purpose of the greatest ruse on earth (which now appears to have been perpetrated by, among others, the Knights Templar) can still be found on Oak Island -- and within such diverse sources as the Bible and ancient myth, and through some of the oldest imagery and symbols known to man.

[The Lost Treasure of the Knights Templar: Solving the Oak Island Mystery by Steven Sora is a good book that theorises that the treasure of solomon's temple that was stolen by the knights templar is buried there.

I agree with this theory the most...i have been studying the templars and freemasons history for a number of years now and I personally believe, the Templars treasure was smuggled to the new world during the persecution by phillip of france. Some claim the grail itself is buried here. while i think that might be possible, im notsure we know what the grail is to look for, if it exists at all.

Not being a religious nut or any thing, has any-one considered why only 'rich' people own the Island?.

Why hasn't a technology that we are in abundance of, been found, to circumnavigate the traps and obstacles that have been encountered?

Has any one wondered why research and exploration of the pit suddenly stopped. Can't be lack of funds as, I am sure, the interested comunity of paranormal believers/ non believers would gladly contribute to a public exploration. If say the Greedy! rich can't afford it.

What ever is buried down there if anything at all, it was buried for a reason, WHY? could it harm those who find it, could it be an ancient weapon of mass destruction!. Whoever buried it wanted it to stay buried.

The technology that existed then could not have done what was done.

Some-one 200 years ago discovered what was realy down there and decided to ensure continued encapsulation.

Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

A very powerful organisation is preventing further exploration why?

Could the templars, on hoarding treasures from davids temple have discovered the whereabouts of the PIT!

I am nowhere near religious but this stinks of government cover up, Hitler and the spear of destiny, to which makes the armies of the holder invinceble.

A load of crap you think! yeah you are probably right, How can a people thousands of miles from nowhere, who have only just discovered that the world was round, have built a feat of civil engineering equivilent to the Pyramids of Giza. We can split the atom but we can't dig. sleepy.gif

EXACTLY! no one could dig that deep.

To bury money/treasure of some kind, you have to take into account that at some point in the future you want to dig it back up to spend it, or at least let your family at it when you get hung from a yard arm for piracy.

"I know lets dig a f***ing deep hole to hide our treasure. Lets also bulid into this hole a whole load of traps and things to stop anyone from getting to it!.

"Er boss...."

"lets build it so it is abso-bloody-lutely impossible to get at it!"

"Boss!!!"

"we'll bulid a fail safe flooding mechanism, no matter how fast they dig it will always flood!"

"BOSS... How the fu*k are we gonna get to it?"

Yeah! its definatley money or treasure, I don't think.

Whats buried is meant to stay buried so for what reason other than it can harm either physically or spiritualy, But why not just destroy it than go to all this trouble.

Its either a hoax to draw in tourists, or a secret never to be found, a closely gaurded something that would and could bring down a church or monarchy.

If it is then, they already know what it is and 'they' are guarding against it being found.

The real treasure is its tourist attraction, but saying that according to the website, its a no-go area for tourists you have to book to see it (but you can buy a mug and t-shirt with Oak island on it).

I don't know perhaps its a bloody medieval cess pit, or an old penal colony escape tunnel.

well by saying this you also state that the pyramids are not built but clearly they are because we couldent build them the way they did without all the computers and heavy machinery. even with all that it would still be near impossible to build them. and obviously they could dig that deep, theres a big deep hole that is clearly there with traps. i dont know if there is money down there but there must be something that some one went to great lengths so no one can get to it.

The Holy Grail is down there, I have seen it... wait a second, why doesnt someone use some kind of seeing device like thermovision or perhaps sonar to at least whats down there? AirCAD
It would only take an hour or 2 using some military detection equipment from a satellite, or a Fly by from a sub seeking aircraft to know if any large amount of metal is on the Island.

I dont think they dug it all out, perhaps some of the Pit was found as a natural phenomenon, ya know, like a geiser or something, they then added channels to flood it, threw some wood and junk down to fill the hole, dumped the treasure and split! They probably didnt realize while burying the treasure that they themselves could not retrieve it at a later time.

Next, if it was a well designed hoax, it could have taken many years for someone to walk by this site, on this small Island, to get this all started, and after all the hoax preparation, maybe no one would have ever discovered it!

I think its something of extreme value, buried into a pre-prepared hole, with lots of added features to keep it there until they wanted to retrieve it. Just may be that those who buried it all died or got sick far far away from the site, and it was left forever....

The Holy Grail is down there, I have seen it...

I live roughly three hours away from Oak Island. When I was young, my family did a few trips to Peggy's Cove (Which happened to pass by Oak Island). My father explained about the mystery that is the Money Pit. He mentioned every time we passed by that the Holy Grail is thought to be buried in it.

I've always been facsinated by this story, even 15 years later, I still get all excited when hearing or reading about it! Just now, I found a link that speculates in more details involving the Holy Grail and the Knights Templar, as mentioned in this topic:

http://www.tartans.com/articles/holygrail.html

I've also heard the version about Captain Kidd stashing some loot too, however, I'm leaning more towards a secretive European society building this pit to guard a legendary relic, rather than treasure hungry pirates! tongue.gif

But who knows? Maybe it's a pirate like Jack Sparrow! Hahaha! w00t.gif

Hello,
this is my first post.

I've always been fascinated by this since I was a little boy, & also wondered why on Earth they haven't managed to dig it up yet.

Anyway, it certainly was possible for people to dig down so deep in the 18th Century, have a look at the Almaden mine in Spain: "In the 12th century, the mine had reached a depth of 450 meters." - thats 1476 feet - in the 1100's!

Even so, sinking a 200 ft shaft on a deserted island, without mining equipment, etc (assuming they didn't have mining equipment) would still be no mean feat, & the additional flood traps, etc make it an amazing piece of engineering.

I should imagine it would take a large number of men a good amount of time to finish it, so it's unlikely that someone got a group of men together, put them on a ship, sailed off to an island & dug a great big hole "just for a bit of a larf!" - they'd all need paying for one thing!
So there must be some purpose behind it, to go to all of that trouble, & it must surely be money?

I can't imagine a load of pirates being capable, or even wanting to go to such lengths, so I guess the only other large group of men you'd be likely to find would be a soldiers/ the navy, & they'd probably be more likely to have the engineering experience necessary?

Historians would surely be able to identify which country the artefacts found - nails, shoes, etc would probably have come from & that would give a good clue to whoever made it, surprising they don't have a better idea original.gif

Surprising too that theres no evidence of where they camped while constructing it, there'd probably be artifacts there too that'd give some clues.

Welcome to UM! Great post.

Regarding campsite remains, I seem to recall hearing that there were some found at some point. If I recall correctly, it was the remnants of a fire, and something involving a tree in the area. I'm not sure, but I believe the tree had some sort of marking or a modified limb or...something. Anybody else know what i'm talking about?

[attachmentid=11927]

The Discovery
One summer day in 1795 Daniel McGinnis, then a teenager, was wandering about Oak Island, Nova Scotia (see Geography) when he came across a curious circular depression in the ground. Standing over this depression was a tree whose branches had been cut in a way which looked like it had been used as a pulley. Having heard tales of pirates in the area he decided to return home to get friends and return later to investigate the hole.

Over the next several days McGinnis, along with friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughan, worked the hole. What they found astonished them. Two feet below the surface they came across of layer of flagstones covering the pit. At 10 feet down they ran into a layer of oak logs spanning the pit. Again at 20 feet and 30 feet they found the same thing, a layer of logs. Not being able to continue alone from here, they went home, but with plans of returning to search more.

It took the three discoverers 8 years, but they did return. Along with The Onslow Company, formed for the purpose of the search, they began digging again. They quickly got back to 30 foot point that had been reached 8 years ago. They continued down to 90 feet, finding a layer of oak logs at every 10 foot interval. Besides the boards, at 40 feet a layer of charcoal was found, at 50 feet a layer of putty, and at 60 feet a layer of coconut fiber.

At 90 feet one of the most puzzling clues was found - a stone inscribed with mysterious writing.

Note: For more information about the stone inscription and to try your hand at translating the stone's inscription go here.

After pulling up the layer of oak at 90 feet and continuing on, water began to seep into the pit. By the next day the pit was filled with water up to the 33 foot level. Pumping didn't work, so the next year a new pit was dug parallel to the original down to 100 feet. From there a tunnel was run over to The Money Pit. Again the water flooded in and the search was abandoned for 45 years.

The Booby Trap
As it turns out, an ingenious booby trap had been sprung. The Onslow Company had inadvertently unplugged a 500 foot waterway that had been dug from the pit to nearby Smith's Cove by the pit's designers. As quickly as the water could be pumped out it was refilled by the sea.

This discovery however is only a small part of the intricate plan by the unknown designers to keep people away from the cache.

In 1849 the next company to attempt to extract the treasure, The Truro Company, was founded and the search began again. They quickly dug down to 86 feet only to be flooded. Deciding to try to figure out what was buried before attempting to extract it, Truro switched to drilling core samples. The drilling produced some encouraging results.

First Hints of Treasure
At 98 feet the drill went through a spruce platform. Then it encountered 4 inches of oak and then 22 inches of what was characterized as "metal in pieces""; Next 8 inches of oak, another 22 inches of metal, 4 inches of oak and another layer of spruce. The conclusion was that they had drilled through 2 casks or chests filled will coins. Upon pulling out the drill they found splinters of oak and strands of what looked like coconut husk.

One account of the drilling also mentions that three small gold links, as from a chain, were brought up. Unfortunately no one knows where they have gone.

Interestingly, the earth encountered beneath the bottom spruce platform was loose indicating that the pit may have gone even deeper. A later group of searchers would find out how much deeper.

The Truro Company returned in 1850 with plans to dig another parallel hole and then tunnel over to the Money Pit. Just like before, as they tunneled over, water began to rush in. They brought in pumps to try to get rid of the water but it was impossible to keep the water out. During the pumping someone noticed that at Smith's Cove during low tide there was water coming OUT of the beach.

This find lead to an amazing discovery - the beach was artificial.

Artificial Beach
It turns out that the pit designers had created a drain system, spread over a 145 foot length of beach, which resembled the fingers of a hand. Each finger was a channel dug into the clay under the beach and lined by rocks. The channels were then filled with beach rocks, covered with several inches of eel grass, and then covered by several more inches of coconut fiber. The effect of this filtering system was that the channels remained clear of silt and sand while water was still allowed to flow along them. The fingers met at a point inland where they fed sea water into a sloping channel which eventually joined the Money Pit some 500 feet away. Later investigations showed this underground channel to have been 4 feet wide, 2 1/2 feet high, lined with stone, and meeting the Money Pit between the depths of 95 to 110 feet.

To the Truro Company, the answer was now simple - just block off the water flow from the beach and dig out the treasure. Their first attempt was to build a dam just off the beach at Smith's Cove, drain the water, and then dismantle the drain channels. Unfortunately a storm blew up and destroyed the dam before they could finish.

An interesting note: the remains of an older dam were found when building the new one.

The next plan was to dig a pit 100 feet or so inland in the hopes of meeting with the water channel underground at which point they could plug the channel. This scheme too failed. And this was the last attempt by the Truro company to uncover the secrets of Oak Island.

The Pit's Collapse
The next attempt at securing the treasure was made in 1861 by the Oak Island Association. First they cleared out the Money Pit down to 88 feet. Then they ran a new hole to the east of the pit hoping to intercept the channel from the sea. The new shaft was dug out to120 feet without hitting the channel and then abandoned.

A second shaft was run, this one to west, down to 118 feet. They then attempted to tunnel over to the Money Pit. Again the water started to enter this pit as well as the Money Pit. Bailing was attempted and appeared to work. And then

CRASH!

The bottom fell out. Water rushed into the shafts and the bottom of the Money Pit dropped over 15 feet. Everything in the Money Pit had fallen farther down the hole. The big questions were why and how far?

Over the next several years different companies tried to crack the mystery unsuccessfully. They dug more shafts, tried to fill in the drain on the beach, built a new dam (which was destroyed by a storm), and drilled for more core samples. They met with little success.

The Cave-in Pit
In 1893 a man named Fred Blair along with a group called The Oak Island Treasure Company began their search. Their first task was to investigate the "Cave-in Pit". Discovered in 1878 about 350 feet east of the Money Pit, the cave-in pit appears to have been a shaft dug out by the designers of the Money Pit perhaps as a ventilation shaft for the digging of the flood tunnel. It apparently intersected or closely passed the flood tunnel. While it was being cleared by the Treasure Company it started to flood at a depth of 55 feet and was abandoned.

Over the next several years The Oak Island Treasure Company would dig more shafts, pump more water, and still get nowhere. In 1897 they did manage to clear out the Money Pit down to 111 feet where they actually saw the entrance of the flood tunnel temporarily stopped up with rocks. However, the water worked its way through again and filled the pit.

The treasure company then decided that they would attempt to seal off the flow of water from Smith's Cove by dynamiting the flood tunnel. Five charges were set off in holes drilled near the flood tunnel. They didn't work. The water flowed into the Money Pit as rapidly as ever.

At the same time a new set of core samples were drilled at the pit itself. The results were surprising.

Cement Vault
At 126 feet, wood was struck and then iron. This material is probably part of the material that fell during the crash of the Pit. On other drillings the wood was encountered at 122 feet and the iron was missed completely indicating that the material may be laying in a haphazard way due to the fall.

Between 130 and 151 feet and also between 160 and 171 feet a blue clay was found which consisted of clay, sand, and water. This clay can be used to form a watertight seal and is probably the same "putty"; that was found at the 50 foot level of the Pit.

The major find was in the gap between the putty layers. A cement vault was discovered. The vault itself was 7 feet high with 7 inch thick walls. Inside the vault the drill first struck wood, then a void several inches high and an unknown substance. Next a layer of soft metal was reached, then almost 3 feet of metal pieces, and then more soft metal.

When the drill was brought back up another twist was added to the whole mystery. Attached to the auger was a small piece of sheepskin parchment with the letters "vi"; "ui"; or "wi"; What the parchment is a part of is still in question.

More convinced than ever that a great treasure was beneath the island, The Treasure Company began sinking more shafts in the attempts to get to the cement vault. They all met with failure due to flooding.

2nd Flood Tunnel
In May of 1899, yet another startling discovery was made. There was a second flood tunnel! This one was located in the South Shore Cove. The designers had been more ingenious and had done more work than previously thought. Though this find certainly strengthened the case that something valuable was buried below it didn't bring anyone closer to actually finding the treasure.

Blair and The Oak Island Treasure Company continued to sink new shafts and drill more core samples, but no progress was made and no new information obtained.

Between 1900 and 1936 several attempts were made to obtain the treasure. All met with no success.

Stone Fragment
In 1936 Gilbert Hadden, in conjunction with Fred Blair, began a new investigation of the island. Hadden cleared some of the earlier shafts near the Pit and made plans for exploratory drilling the next summer. However, he made two discoveries away from the Pit.

The first was a fragment of a stone bearing inscriptions similar to those found on the inscribed stone discovered at the 90 foot level of the Money Pit. The second discovery was of several old timbers in Smith's Cove. These timbers seem to have been from the original designers due to the fact that they were joined using wooden pins rather than metal. As will be seen later these timbers were only a small part of a much larger construction.

Mystery Deepens
The next treasure hunter was Erwin Hamilton. He began his search in 1938 by clearing out previous shafts and doing some exploratory drilling. In 1939 during drilling two more discoveries were made. The first was the finding of rocks and gravel at 190 feet. According to Hamilton they were foreign and therefore placed there by someone. The second finding came after clearing out an earlier shaft down to 176 feet. At this point a layer of limestone was encountered and drilled through. The drilling brought up oak splinters. Apparently there was wood BELOW the natural limestone.

Tragedy Strikes
In 1959 Bob Restall and his family began their attack on the island which ultimately proved tragic.

His one discovery was made on the Smith's Cove beach while attempting to stop the drain system. He found a rock with "1704" inscribed on it. Though others believed it was prank left by a previous search team, Restall believed it was from the time of the original construction.

In 1965 tragedy struck. While excavating a shaft Bob passed out and fell into the water at the bottom. His son, Bobbie, attempted to rescue him as did two of the workers. All four apparently were overcome by some sort of gas, perhaps carbon monoxide from a generator, passed out and drowned.

Heavy Machines
Bob Dunfield was the next to take on the island. In 1965 he attempted to solve the problem with heavy machinery - bulldozers and cranes. He attempted to block the inflow of water at Smith's Cove, and may have succeeded. Then on the south side of the island an trench was dug in the hope of intercepting the other water tunnel and blocking it off. The flood tunnel wasn't found, but an unknown refilled shaft was found, possible one dug by the designers of the Pit. The shaft apparently went down to 45 and stopped, its purpose is unknown.

Dunfield's other findings were based on drilling. It was determined that at 140 feet there was a 2 foot thick layer of limestone and then a forty foot void. At the bottom of the void was bedrock. This information matched with a drilling done back in 1955. There seemed to a large, natural underground cavern, something apparently common with limestone around the world.

Recent Discoveries
Daniel Blankenship, the current searcher, began his quest in 1965. In 1966 he dug out more of the original shaft found by Bob Dunfield in 1965. It turned out that the shaft did go beyond 45 feet. Blankenship found a hand-wrought nail and a washer at 60 feet. At 90 feet he met a layer of rocks in stagnant water. He assumed this was part of the south water tunnel but couldn't explore further because the shaft could not be stopped from caving in.

A pair of wrought-iron scissors were discovered in 1967 buried below the drains at Smith's Cove. It was determined that the scissors were Spanish-American, probably made in Mexico, and they were up to 300 years old. Also found was a heart shaped stone.

Smith's Cove revealed some more secrets in 1970 to Triton Alliance, a group formed by Blankenship to continue the search. While Triton was building a new cofferdam they discovered the remains of what appeared to be the original builders' cofferdam. The findings included several logs 2 feet thick and up to 65 feet long. They were marked every four feet with Roman numerals carved in them and some contained wooden pins or nails. The wood has been carbon dated to 250 years ago.

The western end of the island has also revealed several items. Two wooden structures, along with wrought-iron nails and metal straps were found at the western beach. Nine feet below the beach a pair of leather shoes were unearthed.

Borehole 10-X
The next major discoveries came in 1976 when Triton dug what is known as Borehole 10-X, a 237 foot tube of steel sunk 180 feet northeast of the Money Pit. During the digging several apparently artificial cavities were found down to 230 feet (see: drilling results).

A camera lowered down to a bedrock cavity at 230 feet returned some amazing images. At first a severed hand could be seen floating in the water. Later three chests (of the treasure type I would presume) and various tools could be made out. Finally a human body was detected.

After seeing the images, the decision was made to send divers down for a look. Several attempts were made but strong current and poor visibility made it impossible to see anything.

Soon after the hole itself collapsed and has not been reopened.

Today
Blankenship and Triton still continue the quest.

Oak Island is a 140 acre island just off the eastern coast of Nova Scotia, Canada located in Mahone Bay.
Theories - Who constructed the puzzle on Oak Island?
Captain William Kidd - the notorious privateer. Legends abound about secret caches of treasure buried by Kidd and his crew. Periodically maps have popped up alleged to be Kidd's showing the location of his treasures. There are many tales of old men on their death beds claiming to have been part of Kidd's crews and having knowledge of hidden wealth. Some of these stories point toward Oak Island.

Francis Bacon - there is a raging debate regarding the possibility that Shakespeare's play were not written by him. Some claim that Shakespeare was not educated enough to write his plays and they must have been written by someone else. Some people believe this someone else is Francis Bacon. Since no original manuscripts of Shakespeare have ever been found, the theory goes that Bacon has buried them somewhere to be found some time at some time in the future. This is a fascinating subject by itself that we'll explore under its own topic in the future.

The French - some theorize that the French may have buried money on the island as a safeguard against loss during the many battles with the English over the colonization of the Americas.

The Vikings - there is some record of Viking visitation to the Americas. Though no one knows what would have been so important to hide that such a complicated hiding place was needed, they have been offered as possible builders.

Bands of pirates - Oak Island acted as a communal bank for pirates. Each group would dig tunnels off the Money Pit shaft and bury their treasure. To retrieve it they could dig down through untouched dirt to get their cache.

Stranded Spanish Galleon - it's possible that a Spanish Galleon returning with gold and jewels from Central or South America could have been forced off course. Badly damaged, then stopped at Oak Island, hid the treasure while repairing the ship, and limped home with plans to return later with a more sea-worthy ship to retrieve their cargo.

British during American revolution - similar to the French theory. The idea is that the British hid money on the island to prevent it from falling into the hands of the revolutionaries.

Inca or Maya treasure - during the conquering of the Americas by the Europeans in the 17th and 18th centuries, much of the wealth of the Incas and Mayas disappeared. Usually rumored to have been buried or sunken at the bottom of lakes, some researchers believe that it's possible that a group of Incas or Mayas, possible with the help of sympathetic Europeans, stole away with the wealth and buried on Oak Island out of the reach of the conquerors.

NEWS RELEASE

NEW READING OF MYSTERIOUS OAK ISLAND INSCRIPTION

Theory points to possible connection with nearby Birch Island

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia: Friday, July 14th, 2006 - - For the past two centuries, the tunnels of Nova Scotia’s Oak Island have piqued the imagination of historians and treasure hunters alike. Now, a new theory by First Nations researcher Keith Ranville may add fresh speculation to the mystery. Based on a unique reading of an inscription once found in the “Money Pit,” Mr. Ranville believes that the answer to the riddle may be found on nearby Birch Island.

Oak Island, located on the scenic Mahone Bay about an hour’s drive south of the provincial capital of Halifax, has been associated with buried treasure since the late 18th century. Local settlers reportedly found a ship’s tackle block hanging from a tree branch, overhanging a large depression in the ground. Early efforts to dig down failed when the diggers encountered layers of timber every 10 feet. In the ensuing generations, several organized excavation attempts have drilled down nearly 200 feet, en route encountering some artifacts within the staggered layers of logs, clay, putty, charcoal, flagstones and most perplexingly, coconut husks. Among the scores of enthusiastic treasure hunters was a young Franklin Roosevelt, one of the investors in a 1909 excavation attempt.

During the earlier diggings of 1800’s, the tunnel had become flooded by seawater – which many believed was the result booby trap being sprung – thus complicating further digging since then. A drilling effort in the mid 1800’s was said to have uncovered fragments of a gold chain. In 1971, a camera was lowered into the pit and reportedly captured images of wooden chests and human remains.

One of the most fascinating artifacts from the pit was said to be a flat stone recovered at the 90 foot depth, carrying a mysterious inscription. A fragment of stone with similar symbols was found nearby in Smith’s Cove in the 1930’s. The stone tablet itself has gone missing, but a record of its symbols remains. Until now, the consensus is that the symbols are a code translated as “forty feet below two million pounds are buried.” However, Keith Ranville’s theory offers a different interpretation as to the stone’s symbols, which could lead to a new explanation of the Oak Island mystery.

“I believe these symbols have been incorrectly assumed to stand for something else. In the First Nations tradition that I’m a part of, we believe symbols should simply be looked at in and of themselves, rather than thinking of them as codes that have to be cracked,” Mr. Ranville explained. “In the pictograms of Cree Salavics, for example, the images are meant to be descriptive, not abstract.” Using this approach, Mr. Ranville examined the Oak Island symbols and found what may be a set of instructions about a tunnel system involving both Oak Island and nearby Birch Island.

For example, the stone inscription begins with a triangle symbol, which is repeated throughout. Mr. Ranville believes that this represents nearby Birch Island, which has a distinctly triangular clearing on its north shore. Likewise, a symbol showing a circle divided into two hemispheres can be thought of as representing north/south directional markers. A series of dots in singles, pairs and triplets may be quantitative symbols.

Examining all the symbols in this way, Mr. Ranville believes that the symbols on the Money Pit’s stone tablet are actually technical instructions describing the location and layout of a possible underground network involving both Oak Island and Birch Island. “There was a fragment of another stone tablet that was found on Oak Island’s Smith Cove in the 1930’s,” Mr. Ranville explained. “It too has these types of symbols, but one in particular appears to be a Greek symbol designating ‘underwater door’. In conjunction with the other symbols, I believe this points to underwater doors and additional shafts on Birch Island itself.” Smith’s Cove is on the part of Oak Island that is closest to Birch Island, and is said to have yielded several artifacts itself over the years.

“Based on the inscribed symbols, I think we should be looking at Oak Island and Birch Island together in order to solve the mystery. If Birch Island proves to have underwater doors and tunnels around its triangular clearing, then it would be a huge step forward in our understanding of what Oak Island is all about.”

There have been many, occasionally bizarre, theories as to what the Oak Island tunnels may contain: a Masonic vault containing the Holy Grail, Viking or Pirate booty, Inca treasure, the French Royal Crown Jewels, payroll for colonial British soldiers or even the secret writings of Francis Bacon. Mr. Ranville prefers not to speculate. “Those are interesting and sometimes funny theories, but I’d rather just look at the evidence that we do have, and go from there.”

Mr. Ranville is a self-taught researcher born in Manitoba. While living in Vancouver, he became acquainted with the Oak Island mystery and began studying it. In October 2005, he relocated to Nova Scotia to further research and advance his theories on the subject.

Both Oak Island and Birch Island are private property, and access must be sought by permission of the landowners.

I have decoded the symbols found in the money Pit In 1803 using my Native heritage background the translation of the forty symbols explains about a Island two Islands east of Oak Island called birch Island, on the north end of birch Island the impression of a triangle is there it takes more than half of the Island you can see the triangle from google sattilite, the triangles that were inscribed on the stone tablet refers to the triangle on Birch Island the rest of the symbols are engineering instructions or explains what goes on in the triangle area on Birch Island there is something of great heritage value there, that will interest everyone.

Thank you for your time

yes I translated the symbols found in the money pit,
the symbols read two Islands east of Oak Island "Birch Island"
to a large triangle on its north shore.. there are underground workings in this triangle

The tunnel theory is more logical I think. Otherwise, the only reason I can think of to create so many traps is the original 'doer' didnt want under any circumstances for it to be found. Which says to me that it isnt 'normal' whatever is down there. Maybe the devil himself is buried there? So to speak. Especially when you see the stone etching on the wall on Oak Island.

The Oak Isand heart stone is a ancient tool otherwise a mallet head perhaps used to construct the money pit. The Handle was grooved to attach to the wedged stone? Then wraped with material available twine/leather.
The builders of the money pit had simple ancient tools this is a clue of the culture responsible for the Oak Island mystery.

well if this info is correct then the supposed treasure is lost forever now since they drilled through there chests which spilled all the money/jewels/gold and they activated a ''booby trap'' which opened up a passage to the sea so this means that all of the treasure would have gone out to sea

They should just build a giant cofferdam around the island, then bring in several hundred archeology students and dig the thing up once and for all. They've used cofferdams to expose shipwrecks in the Mediteranian Sea and what archeology student would not want to get in on a dig at Oak Island? This is a simple engineering problem, you just move the water and sand faster then it fills in. The problem as I see it is that the current owners will not allow the complete digging up of the island. Oh Well! grin2.gif

Maybe they could put someone in a mini submarine and throw them in one of the holes? It'd be easier to navigate the strong currents than just scuba diving... And the lights on the sub would make it easier for them to spot the treasure. And if they WERE to find something down there, couldn't they use robotic arms or whatever to retrieve it and bring it back to the surface?
Just a thought. original.gif

what I wonder about is how people or something in the past managed to dig something so deep and humans right now cant go all the way.
Pavot
Pavot Book here sorry and end does drift off topic of Oak Island, sorry, I am long Winded as well and thinker out side of the box...

It is one huge and very elaborate engineering feat to say the least of it and it took one or many combine brilliant minded thinkers to plan it out and to organize it and see it through, And I think it is even far more elaborate then what is known as of yet, it ether took a very long time season willing or it was excavated by a lot of people, my theory upon the dead Body -->(Bodies ?) and severed hand--> (hands ?) if as follow, wasn’t there a mention in some piratical about the Practice of Pirates cutting off the hands of treasure burring (Employees) Slaves, why the hands, I mean why not just a musket ball or shovel to the head, I mean what use is a One handed sailor… And my other though pondered here is, so if this a ledged severed Hand and this Body was in fact down in this underground tunnel/cave/1795 and the 1800’s was a long time ago and bodies decompose very fast, especially when there is dank earth and even faster when there is sea water, the time lines just don’t Jive with the decomposing of human bodies, maybe if it was in the Sahara Desert of Egypt or an arid dry region but there are worms and there are other of natures creatures down there…

No if there really was a Hand and a Body then there is more to that than what is being told, Maybe there have been other Treasure Seeker to the Island them that the Owners of the Island and Money Pit knew of or did they? It is Accesable just off the main land this Island so close in fact they created a way to drive heavy equipment accros to the island and it could not have been well guarded it is too treed and too un populated although small and privately owned or maybe they did know of Bodies down there and that’s why the film footage is hushed as not publically shown… there are always a lot of question to be asked in Treasure seeking, and then most usually it’s not answers but for more question to be asked and on, only if there is a Archeological excavation are there more likely definite and accurate answers, but as it stands upon Oak Island and in other Treasure in searching, people don’t want others poking about their pipe dreams, case in point, the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine in Arizona, yes people die there in searching and yes because of Nature and the hash environmental conditions but more so I am willing to bet due to the Human Greed Factor… There was a Man here that spent his entire life researching traveling about and tracking down claims of buried catches of gold and treasures, well he found one, and then he was on the trail of another and had it narrowed down real close, I belief he found it but he was found murdered and I believe there are those that sit back in surveillance and pray upon the finders, it has been that way all through time…that’s what Gold fever will get yah and that’s what the Human Greed factor is all about both ends of the spectrum of Greed… heck today they are robbing each other over Gasoline, they are even steel frying oil from the restaurants now because its Bio Fuel and worth a lot of money…crazy world out there man and just keeps on getting crazier every day…Pavot

I copied here my same posting I just placed upon the other Oak Island thread, as I am not sure if they merged here or what, but both pertain to Oak Island and the treasure said within...Pavot
